My playing style in ADOM is very melee-orientated. I rarely make excessive use of magicks, even with a magic-based character. Therefore I have always taken out the big bosses either in melee or with missiles (missiles, of course, being the obvious choice very often).

I have read about these wands of paralyzation on this forum, but I haven't paid much attention to them...

...until I thought I'd try it out on the ACW a couple weeks ago. Holy sh** what an effect. Zap a few charges of paralyzation and the wyrm is out for heaps o' rounds. Then just berserk him with some awesome weapon. I was actually quite surprised by the effect, it's almost like cheating. With WoP you only need a fireproof blanket and invisibility to easily wrap up the tower.

Also, Keethrax is a walk in the park with WoP. His corrupting bolts, stat drains and confusion attacks can be very annoying, but with WoP he too can easily be meleed to death. I haven't tried the wand on the other bosses, but surely most of them will be vulnerable to this tremendously powerful tool. If these wands work on all Orb Guardians, Eternal Guardians, and casino characters, the game would certainly become much easier.

If you're going for the tower and thinking about those rings of ice; WoP is one hell of a substitute.

That is all.

I find them most handy against the cat lord, since he's such a bitch otherwise. He'll shrug off a few bolts, but once one gets through he's history. Very useful for melee characters (otherwise webs + arrows or ball spells works well)

The two other tactics to really weaken powerful bosses are blindness and confusion. Blindness is easy by tossing a cursed potion of invis at them (or a potion of blindness, which is usually easy to get if you have alchemy). Potions of confusion are much rarer, but any char with 100% Ventriloquism will have an easy time with a great many bosses.

The wand of paralyzation is the best wand bar none, except for the wand of wishing (at the very least because you can use one of the charges on "wands of paralyzation" if you so desire). Paralyzation is a very cool effect. Trouble is you have to prepare the opponent properly so you can use the wand often enough to get the effect working. Contrary to the wand of stunning, however, the effort is worth it.

Against the cat lord, I've found the wand of webbing to be an excellent tool. The first thing I usually do is lure him to a level that allows teleportation. Then I choose a nice long hallway, web it, and make it so that the damn bugger has several nice squares of webs to struggle through, while I shoot arrow after arrow (or magic missile, or wand of poison charge) at him. Especially nasty: Making him run into the middle of the hallway, getting stuck in webs, teleporting behind him and webbing the OTHER half of the hallway. Now he can't even get away after panicking (which usually is annoying as hell)! The Farsight spell is an excellent tool to help you pull this off, since it enables you to use all your missile weapon range.

Potions of blindness or confusion alone aren't that safe against the cat lord on their own because they don't take away his melee attack. Good to keep him occupied while you pepper him with wands of paralyzation, though.

Ventriloquism has the inherent weakness that you have to stand next to the opponent for it to work. I would rather just throw a potion of blindness or confusion, since it has the same effect (making your enemy stumble around, hitting you only by accident) - from afar.
You drop the golden ball.
You kick the golden ball. It slides to the west.
Suddenly Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, appears! "That's not how you play Quidditch! are you even listening?"

Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is hit by a bolt of acid! Harry Potter, the apprentice wizard, is annihilated.
You hear the ecstatic cries of a large crowd!

It certainly helps, but with a long straight tunnel is not strictly necessary.

That's true for potions of blindness, but potions
of confusion do give a 7/8 chance of taking away
his melee attack, if he's in a narrow tunnel. I
think the best thing about WoP is that you can
paralyze opponants from a distance, even through
other enemies. There is no other monster in the
game that can do that. (I actually had never
thought about that until I read it in one of
Soirana's guides.)
