First time I've tried taking this guy on at lvl18, but eventually he died to paralyzation and wyrmlance. A bit akward when he snapped out of paralyzation and I had no charges left, but since he was at severely injured I just kept berserking him until he died.

Damage report:

-8 toughness
-6 strength
-4 learning
-some other stuff decreases
-half inventory cursed
-myself cursed

Now I'm going to eat him.

You meleed the scaly bastard? Wow. I don't do that unless I feel overconfident and then die :P
Didn't you have any penetrating or slaying ammo?

Well, he was sort of retreating.. sort of. My bows were actually at level 7 and I had 6 dragon slaying arrows with me, but I don't trust them until I have at least 10-12 of them. He was also very keen on regenerating and the hit point damage I took wasn't that much.

After eating him I got +6 strength, +3 toughness, +10 mana and +5 perception. That was alright. What was not alright was that every single one of the corruptions was horrible or useless: poison hands, slow mode, wand thingy, thorns, horns, corns etc. I spent exactly 5 SoCR on them.

Also, when Keriax died, he dropped an amulet of order. Must have been hanging around the neck of the last guy.

No, Keriax used it so the he woudln't go from C- to L+ due to overflow ;)

I witnessed that even rusty penetrating quarrels shot from Far Slayer drop him in 5-6 shots, so 6 blessed slaying ammo from a good weapon should at least get him down to critically injured.

What race/class are you playing? It's quite a feat to kill Keriax at 18th level - my best attempt was lvl 20 back in version 1.0.

It is, not surprisingly, a troll. And he is a bard (although no alertness, archery, concentration, dodge or find weakness). I have recently discovered that nothing is much of a feat anymore with a wand of paralyzation in your backpack. My mistake was of course that I brought no booze to the party. That's where it turned ugly. Luckily Robes of resistance and bracers gave me +9 extra toughness, so I had enough hitpoints, even with all the draining.

I think a troll can take him on with the right equipment already by lvl 12. Wand of paralyzation is really the only thing you absolutely have to have, everything else is secondary. With an unblessed WoP (don't know if b/u/c status matters) he was paralyzed for a good 15-20 turns. Of course, 7-8 out of 10 times the troll would probably die.

You think that's a bit over the top?

You should have at least tried softening him up with the ammo. I've killed him at level 21 before using just regular arrows - a lot of them didn't hurt him, but running around with SLBs meant it was just a matter of time.

And so the Eternal Guardian. No speed (except 7LB) and no penetration weapon. Took out one using only 7LB and Sword of Sharpness. Took too long, so I wished for phasers. Took on nr. 2 before realizing that my speed was not adequate.

Masterplan:

Re-incarnate 10-12 Eternal Guardians and come back for them later. What a super plan!

Well, I most unfortunately ran out of teleportation (if you count unfortunate as standing between two ET's and at that very moment being able to zap the final charge) so I had to go straight to last ET. Ventriloquism worked on him, so I just skipped down the stairs. I elegantly skipped the casino, wanting to re-surface fast for important stuff, when I remembered that DF-shortcut doesn't work now.

Going back to level with ET's and this time, guess what: when ET guarding the stairs gets confused he still leaves an reincarnation! Typical. I start walking away when I see that the ET is gone from the stairs! I spend my last charge on yet another WoT, but, of course, ET was plainly out of sight and is still guarding the stairs. My last zap fails and now I'm stranded with 4 rooms with 2 ET's in each between me and the exit.

I might think better, with a .vlg to work with.
Maybe try creating a teleportation trap. With a
phase dagger, you should be able to kill the EG's.
I would suggest letting poison do most of the
work for you. Alchemy skill?

Poison? Alchemy?

Hah!

If I can melee, I melee.

First I reincarnated about 20 or so more ET's, then I tried to get as many of them as possible to gang up on me at the same time.

It might not have been the right thing to do, but, by god, my death was a good one!

Haha, man, that is one cool death... But no digging wands? Pick axe + locked doors? Trap creation? You could even have tried just confusing the EGs in your way and skipping past them, or luring them into a room and webbing them in place. Ah well... I guess in future you'll think twice before playing around with EGs :)

This is the future...

I had wands of digging and could quite readily have made my way out, but I think this was the right moment to let this guy go.

You must not always look at life through the lens of survival. Dying to 30 angry Eternal Guardians is sometimes better than finishing a game after a boring WoD ending.

I agree on that point - I will never do WoD. I'd rather step into the gate unprepared.

What's so bad about a WoD? I always do it, after I clean out D:50.
What kind of hero leaves usable levers behind?

Also, Sulangatori - That is my kind of death. A real man's death, not like some grey elven wizard pansy ;)

I'd say dying to one anything, is almost always prefered
to the WoD ending. I wonder, is this a type of challenge
situation? Like, create a nearly unbeatable situation,
then try to beat it. Maybe, just going for most unwinnable
situation ever? Or just an alternative to 'Q'?

In one of my previous games, I didn't want my troll PC to
win. He had to pray for satiation once, after picking up the
'poison hands' corruption in the tower, and that kind of
ruined him for me. I didn't want to just 'Q' though, because
he had accomplished a lot, so I decided to give him a 'special'
death. He was aged to death, fighting ghosts on D:50 in melee : )

Mealstrom:

Pansy? Take any other race/class combo into the ToEF,
with 99 HP's, and see what happens.
