I've noticed in my recent games that the RNG hasn't moved to kill my character, but rather make me lose hope so I kill them myself. Take for example my two most recent characters:

Dark Elf/Archer:
Starts off pretty nicely: Finds 7LB in the Big Room, decimates the Pyramid, manages to avoid all cats, gets Crowned Neutral with Far Slayer. Then the trouble starts. He can't manage to find any quarrels (I probably found 30 the whole game, as ratling archers refuse to fire), nor any Fletchery sets or PoE.

In addition, he fails to find a wand of ice or any ice spells for the entire game (I forgot about Bridge building, as I almost never even consider it). I figured I'd go Gremlin pick pocketing, but alas, no wands/amulets of light throughout the game either. Eventually I just quit (after prolonged failure to obtain any of these).

Next, Shadow II, the Hurthling thief. He dives into PC only to find a river blocking his path. Oh well, guess Kenny will bite the dust after all. Goes to kill Keethrax and gets caught between cats in a corridor. No kitty ring this time.

As he descends through CoC, I note that monsters seem tougher than I'm used to. A lesser mixed vault on CoC 9 contained Berserker Lords, several giants, and a baby black dragon, who happily destroys a orcish knife of mayhem (5d3, +8). CoC 11 contains lots of herbs, so I begin farming...and manage to gain a my first corruption by day 30: Astral Planes...without tele-control. Great. Afterwards, I sac the stoma to get extremely close to my deity but forget that I've generated 3 artifacts (the Moon Sickle was on D11), so no precrowning this time. I decided to go and level up in the TotHK (LV14 by this point).

As soon as I arrive I discover the entry room is cut by a river. Guess I'll have to rely on random teleportation to get around. First place I teleport to contains a baby black dragon, who promptly destroys my climbing set.

So now I'm stuck at TotHK with no way out, Astral Planes, and three levels to find a climbing set before the Pyramid closes. Did I mention I didn't have Treasure Hunter by this point? And that my character had switched alignments by this point, so he couldn't ask for divine help? He ended up dying to an angry Ogre Lord on UC 3.

What are your stories of cruel RNG frustration tactics, when it doesn't kill you but drives your characters to indirect suicide?

Some nasty experiences there... I got my climbing set destroyed in the Rift before, and spent ages gathering up enough gold to buy a set from the ratling trader, only to find he'd been killed by another monster. I didn't quit though - spent ages pickpocketing till I got an RoDS which I used on a climbing set. During all that time I had the ape corruption, and found that my St and To had gone up through the roof, so the rest of the game turned out quite easy. Thus my perserverence paid off...

Indeed, I have had Rift troubles as well. I forget
which version it was, but it was long ago. I spent
ages gathering gold, to buy a climbing set from
the rat. Since there was a handy altar, I also
decided to live-sac a bit.

I noticed that I suddenly went from 'strained' to
'burdened', and had to check the message buffer
to see what had happened. It turns out that a
ratling thief had picked my pocket, right before
I sacced him. Of course, he took my gold with him,
and I didn't want to get more, so I 'Q'.

Talking about unreal luck...

I remember one time when I faced total of FOUR (4)[IV] RIVERS in the CoC the way from the surface down to the dwarven town. After frustating crossing me my blanket got accidentally destroyed and I got stucked in the CoC. Afterwards Thrundarr thought that wasnt plenty enough so he decided to give me some damn rare monster to be slain (cant remember it correctly for sure).

So upwards there were all of those rivers and my whole equipment would get ruined if I tried to cross them. And downwards there were Animated forest and DH...
...no way to out - I 'Q'uitted
"The white baby dragon equips the small shield." WTF :D

That reminds me... started a char very recently that had both the PC1 stairs and DD1 stairs generated in the middle of big rivers - had absolutely no way of getting to the rest of the levels. So I braved SMC and managed to get through, only to get killed by something pathetic on UD1. God damn it...

Rivers can be really irritating. I recently found
a river on an early dungeon level, and explored the
side I was on. Finding no stairs there, I decided
to bite the bullet and cross.

After healing up (with no healing skill, so this
took a while) I explored the other side. I realized
the stairs were on the side of the river that I
started on, just behind a hidden door. One of the
more frustrating parts of ADOM.

I just had this kind of frustrating game.
datkidh wizard:
started with lot of luck - precrowened with Preserver, got 5 RoDS via dipping, clear tower with no problem, killed blup`s mom and found 6 (!) PoCC before entering the casino.
But then things were started to go very wrong. I entered GV of undead (the one with alot
of emperor liches) and I made a tunnel outside of it and started to xas magic missile inside.
after about 200 magic missiles that were cast inside I noticed 3 things: 1.one of the master liches brought his cats and I killed about 5 of them without even noticing 2. Non of the emperors were dead and only 1 king was out.
3. there were more undeads in the level from when I started cleaning it up.
Ok, I thought I must do something else: I went to cowerd mode (126 DV, 61 PV), teleport myself near the liches and started to cast acid balls like hell. First time I prayed for PP I got crowned (S*H*I*T) and my stats become much lower then I remembered. After dust was clean and I killed all the big liches, I was -19 st, -8 wi, -6 dx, -11 to and -6 pe. I was also aged by 35 years. wanna know what artifacts I found? long sting and black book...
I was ready to go one with my 5 st, thinking the next giant room I`ll encounter will fix that in no time... 3 level after I got truely excited and found the BOW... guarded by another GV of UD.
On the room next to me was a black dragin wating and as soon I came in, 7 of my 9 SoCR were gone... I was so angery so I teleport myself inside again and starded to cast acid balls again, but I knew It`s a suicide.
Died very old and very bitter...

Not to rub it in, but a wizard of mine just found two wands of wishing in the water cave, with five charges each. This obviously means he's going to meet a fast, brutally unpredictable end.
Give a man a fire, and he will be warm for a day. Light a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

being doomed w/o knowing it is usually the worst for me. sometimes i'll sac on an altar after i forgot i went N to get pickpockets and all my equipment is dusted. turning all your potions into poison can be a big bummer too.

if everything in the game is easy it's kinda a race past all the levels and it can get boring so it's ok.

the worst thing i ever did was high dive from the rift to a river at the bottom and got pounded by rock throwing trolls. that archer was stacked too. at least i set a world record high dive in the process though eh?
