I really enjoy robbing shops with the invisibility potion. Unfortunately, I noticed this doesn't work all the time.
"<shopkeeper name> eyes you intensely at your position".

Crap!

spoily question...

What does a Thundering Sword do?

I notice when I hit creatures it makes them stagger around.., unable to control their actions.

And what does the Wicked Long sword do?

Ahh, thanks. That makes sense.
Robbing a shop 4 times?

I have a better idea -- picking the pockets of gremlins.

Man, the stuff you can grab from them!

Totally random!

I once had such a high DV value, I could just SIT there, keep robbing them, hit them once *BAM* they're dead. "Ok, next sucker up, please..."

I loved it.

I could even train my archer up to Grand Master
using those gremlins. A two-handed sword of penetration does alot of damage!

Truckman.

Yup, I've done that. Once got a PoGA from a gremlin. Blessed, no less! Strangely enough, that was the same game that the Phial wasn't generated. I had to feed the AMW to the ratling... *sob*

Yep, thieves are very good because of Pick Pockets skill and useful class powers. I've managed to pick pocket Bracers of War from a zombie and Whirlwind from a goblin. Of course I have to mention stat increasing potions and PoGA. I'm currently playing drakish thief (aspiring to UCG ending) and have pick pocketed at least 3 potions of To, 2 potions of curecorrupt and all kinds of useful stuff. I just waiting to reach level 32 and I can pick better stuff out of monsters' pockets. I still need AoLS so I may have to spend some time in gremlin cave or Big Room.

I pocketed a ring of djini summoning today.
The lvl 32 class powers are not that great. You wont use pickpocket much by the time you reach lvl 32.

That's how it turns out for me too, by that time i'm crowned lawful or something so couldn't use it even if i wanted to. And the fact that monsters are generally too tough to spend time pick'n pockets.

Thieves are generally great at ultra endings, i've only ever gotten close to them with thieves. Btw, every time i try to steal stuff from a shop the shopkeeper gets hostile. Why not just kill him (all shopkeepers are male right?) in the first place?

I don't see how beeng crowned lawfully would prevent the use of pick pocketing. The chaotic act is very minor, and most lawfull champions have plenty of "white stones" to spare anyway...

If you are starting to get to close to newtraliy just put on a amulet of order and be nice for a while (or even better wear it while you are pick pocketing for a smaller penalty).

If things get realy bad just make a few sacrifices at a nearby lawfull altar, or donate a bunch of food to a beggar (ratling food, "bad" herbs, or dangerous corpses, they eat anything). Just "tame" one and bring it along to the CoC to avoid unnesesary wilderness traveling...

i played a thief a while back for the first time. (first time to live for a while anyway) i'd steal every item i wanted from every shop and never got caught. the Cx command said i had a 95% chance of success in shops, it's foolproof.

as far as chaotic acts are concerned yeah there's no need to worry about that. if what jan said doesn't help there's one thing that ALWAYS works. self mutilation :) if you're really tough you will have to use a whip of slaughtering though. might be hard to find one of them. but if your toughness is 25 or below (just guessing) you shouldn't have problems.

once i was going for a precrowning as a lawful but became lawful plus while saccing. i used a RoDS (was a cheat game) and wished for a goodwife, promptly murdered her then prayed on the next turn and guess what.....mortal ye hast done great service to my cause...lol. anyway, you have to kill several lawfuls to bring you from L+ to NL.

Speaking of self flagelation. Does whips of penetration work "properly" when used for this purpose?

gnomes make great theives. not as weak as some races, good dex, plus naturally get pick pockets.
right now i'm sorta giving up on actually beating the game any time soon; usualy i just muck around and rack up kills, do all the quests in and b4 dwarftown, train stats, train wepon skills, try to get mastery with as many weapons as i can (i've gotten 2 wep skills at 11, 1 at 8, the rest at 5 all with one char), etc. although this is *much* easier if i can get survival.
speaking of wepon skills; i think i've figured out exactly what the "falling star" birth message does. it reduces all missile weapon skill requirements by 10%. thats what happened to an archer i recently had. just thought i'd mention it, b/c Andy Williams' site wasn't too sure on that.

Answer: No.

O - Tl: normal whip of penetration (-4, 1d3)

Do you want to engage in self-flagellation? [y/N]
You whip yourself.
You don't feel a lot.
Maybe you should get rid of some protection.

no, it was with all missile weapon skills. and IIRC it was a human anyways. whatever it was it wasn't a gnome. (besides it was affecting all missile weapon skills)
