I have been looking at a few videos for ADOM and ADOM II, among others, and am trying to see what is out there to try out. A small issue... I have seen quite a few videos and screen shots, and they show a varience in graphics quality. If I were to hop right into ADOM or ADOM II, is there a recommended download or version of the game or something that you would say is the best way to go about installation and gameplay?

I'd say just grab the latest version from http://www.ancardia.com/download.html

It should be fairly stable. ADOM II is in a very unfinished state, more of a engine with a sandbox on top. Whereas ADOM have been a fully fledged game for decades now.

The graphical tiles are a fairly new addition (the versions with NotEye i integration), ADOM have traditionally been ASCII graphics only.

Just download the zip file unzip it where you want the game to be and run the executable.

the link you sent me... http://www.ancardia.com/download.html - is that for ADOM or ADOM II? Also, I went to the site, what is the difference between archive and torrent? Do you recommend one over the other? Are the levels in ADOM random each time a character is made?

That link is for ADOM, you can get the latest version of ADOM II here: http://www.adom.de/adom-ii/downloads/javawebstart/ It need Java installed to run by the way.

It pretty much says on the game what the torrent does, it's just a way to download the game using a bittorrent client (which you probably don't have installed if you don't know what a torrent is). No difference between the two other than the way you download it. The file is not large so just downloading the archive with your browser will work fine, the zippy share site he's hosting it on is a bit annoying though.

There are a few "hard coded" levels (all towns, and a few special locations), but the majority of levels are randomly generated yes. Not when you create the chartacter but when you first visit a new dungeon level the map is generated then and then saved for the duration of the game. Except for in the infinite dungeon, once you leave a level there it's gone and a new one is created when you climb back up.
