Damn i just lost a perfectly good char in a 291, my first ever :(. I was on day 59 and was making my final descent. This char was goin' well... i think it's story time (:

Once upon a time there was a little gray elf called Calamir wishing to seek his luck and riches in a big world. Although he always was a powerful fighter amongst his peers he had a keen interest and fascination in magic, so he decided to become a paladin.
When he was old enough he decided to test his adventuring abilities. Kissing his mother he leaves for a place commonly known as the Drakalor Chain. The first place to take his interest in this mountain chain was a small town called Terinyo, where he had interesting discussions with a druid, a tiny girl and a sheriff who decided to follow him when he left.
Afterwards his journeys led him to another town called Lawenilothehl. This town wasn't a very friendly place and the sheriff went beserk killing all the outaws and villans. Spurred on by this flurry of slaughtering Calamir decided to kill a beggar, however the sheriff didn't seem to pleased by this display, so they decided to part ways there.
Calamir headed for a cave that seemed magically distorted and everytime he turned around it appeared to have changed. He got lost in there for some time, learning a few spells and training his weapon and missile skills, until some magical scroll arrived, a formal invitation to meet a chap called Rhetep in the pyramid. Well Calamir couldn't turn down such a friendly invitation so he decided to find a way out of this cave.
Eventually finding a way out he thought it would be wise to make a few sacrifices to his god before visiting the pyramid. They we're suprisingly pleased and gifted him with a glaive called Long Sting, and some magical braces seeming to cause him to heal faster. A sacrifice that stood out was when a cat stood on the altar, he got a strange vision of the cats soul plumaging into the ground. Being somewhat arrogant Calamir thought he'd quickly vanquish the mortal enemy of the Druid in Terinyo, called Kethrax, before going to the pyramid. He fell easily and Calamir picked up his corpse and a dark torc. He tried blessing the corpse in holy water, eventually selling it to the food store in Terinyo.
Calamir also popped to rescue the tiny girls puppy aswell, however when he got there it was already dead. He never had the heart to tell her. But he found a magical item he once read about called Seven League Boots, they have the ability to make one walk significantly faster.
Eventually Calamir set off for the pyramid stopping off in a small cave with a lot of teleportational devices. After he got bored with that he eventually got to the pyramid. The pyramid was maze, laced with traps and trick doors, however, for some reason, Calamir continued on through the maze, somehow he knew the way to go without ever being told.
When Calamir met up with Rhetep, he was told to hand over his skin. Calamir, strongly objecting to this, refused, and Rhetep started attacking him with a few of his friends. Calamir used a lightning spell he learned along the way and Rhetep was killed. Calamir picked up his Ancience Mummy Wrapping and an Anhk that Rhetep dropped when he was killed, and ran.
He ran into a clearing in the nearby forest where a old barbarian was training his weapon skills. It's hard to say what came over calamir but he cast a spell of darkness and murdered the old barbarian in cold blood.
He then popped into another cave which later turned out to be a forge of malevolant origins. All these animated constructions attacked him, however they were highly vunerable to his lightning ball spell. Every one he killed seemed to make him stronger. He picked up an artifact known as the crown of science, but feared to wear it - and never did. (OOC: There was only 3 pools in darkforge!)
Proceeding to a large cavern known as the caverns of chaos he ventured until he met a town filled with dwarves. Along the way he picked up a strange item that he couldn't figure out what it does. And drank from a few pools which eventually yielded a wish. Having little idea what to wish for he hastily replied "amulet of life saving", knowing that one day it may save his life. He was also turned invisable which he thought could be handy, and seemed to teleport at random.
At dwarftown Calamir went shopping and saw a very expensive price on a item labelled "Ironfist." The shopkeeper explained that this was indeed a powerful artifact. However Calamir could not afford even close to the price asked. During one of Calamir's random teleport he ended up in a very small room, with a mysterious person. Having a very brief word with this lad, Calamir was given an axe.
Calamir later had a long word with the dwarvish elder that resided in dwarftown. Since he was a good paladin he was asked to save the spirit of Griff Bloodax. However he couldn't manage to get any significant quests due to his invisability.
He proceeded downwards and collected an ancient scythe. Extremely frustrated, Calamir's amulet of life saving was burned away by a fire drake. But not as frustrated as he was when he ran into a person called Khelavaster who was almost dead, and unable to move. Calamir decided not to proceed past this point and return to the surface.
He went to save the soul of Griff Bloodax. He teleported in, put holy water on his grave, dug it up and found a sword. Killed the necromancer that was defiling his corpse and killed a mysterious bone golem which he found a pair of elemental gauntlets.
With his invisability as a useful form of defense he proceeded into a cave northwest of Terinyo. A weird place this was, having rats as strong as giants. Just after going down the stairs he found a black tome, which felt as if it was corrupting him just by holding it. He also found another pool which he drank from. He got cursed (which later turns out to last most of his life) but he got another wish, and again asked for an amulet of life saving.
He continued until he reached a place called the High Mountain Village where he left through a secret enterance he heard about when an adventuer was talking to him during his youth. He continued on to the whole other side of the Drakalor chain entering a cavern with gremlins in it. Collecting an item called the phial of caladral. He also found a climbing set so he made his way over the mountains and into another cave. Eventually he found a tome surrounded by red fish-like things. He froze the water (the inhabitants weren't too pleased) and kicked down the door - which stunned the skeletal king that was behind it. He killed him using a few bolt spells. He picked up the Ring of the High Kings he was told about when he was a child.
On his way back to talk to Khelavaster he decided to pop into the temple of fire. He felt inside himself that there was a valuable object in there that he required before going further. Because of his cursing his second amulet of life saving was burned away, but he left with a red coloured orb, and ate the corpse of it's guardian.
He then proceeded further down the caverns of chaos, and Khelavaster was never saved. He gave a demented ratling 6 of his crappiest artifacts, and decided to just take "Ironfist" from the shop and flee. Along the way he raided a water temple stealing a valuable water orb. Eventually making it to a casino where he obtained a artifact scorched spear (280147gp bargain). Then found a shortcut connection to the surface through darkforge. With the large amounts of money he obtained from the casino he sacrificed it to a neutrally aligned god and got himself crowned. His god gifted him with Aylas' Holy Scarf. (he never figured out who Aylas is). He went into a place filled with these enormous bugs that could slice through even artifact armour at a glance. However that's just what the bugs didn't get, a glance, Calamir was invisable. He didn't want to eat their corpses thinking they were too corrupted.
At this point it was almost into his second month since he entered the Drakalor Chain, and with his arrogance, he decided it's time to save the world. At this point he decided that he's going down the Caverns of Chaos either to die or become a hero. He met this enormous vault of giants and ogres, and killed them all. Picking up Wyrmlance in the process, a famous dragon-slaying artifact.
Continuing down he reached the temple of air, and removed all his equipment, bar artifacts, and dropped it onto the ground so it wouldn't get destroyed by the frequent lightning strokes. Calamir completely oblivious to the effect he was going to have, just completely destroyed the world. Somehow by dropping all his equipment the whole universe, and time itself, ceased to exist. His last memories are of a repeated number, 291, 291, 291.
From the afterlife his god welcomed him with opened arms. He asked his god what does "291" mean, and his god explained "Gods do not actually have infinite wisdom, it's just so obscenely large that it's considered infinite by mortals. When the universe was created a few 'bugs' in the space-time fabric were introduced, by accident. 291 is infact the 291th recognised one." It was then when his god set to the task of sorting out all the other people in the universe who had lost their lives by this catastrophe.
Calamir was given the position of a demi-god and helped contribute to the creation of the new universe.

The End

Arrrgh, I just lost a good character to a crash for the first time ever. It was a Trollish Elementalist on her way up to retrieve the fire orb. She was in the big room, not doing anything special, just fighting, when suddenly the messages "Signal 11 was raised" and "Segmentation fault" appeared, and the game crashed, leaving no save file :-(

Does anyone have any ideas what might have caused this? Could it be a problem with my computer (ADOM never crashed on my old machine)? I'm running Unix, and the messages suggest an illegal memory access. I don't know what the Windows equivalent would be - maybe "General Protection Fault" or "This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down."

And next crash (this confusing power of in yesterday) my PC had on special levels 6, 12, 18 and the last 25 backups.... but when I saw only a black screen I temporary lost my love to play in ADOM and relax in other game...

I lost a lvl50 HE wizard yesterday when I was fighting ancient red dragons in a vault to the signal 291. Just when a dragon started to pick up a heap of items the signal was raised. And I don't have the habit to backup my games... :( Oh well.

Don't you all hate signal 291. A totally stupid signal, isn't it. That's be'cos i lost my L50 dwarven fighter due to this signal.

All these level-fifty chars getting killed by 291... what a coincidence...

But, of course, at level 50, about all that CAN kill you is 291...

Never got that 291. Maybe because I never had a lvl 50 char. :)

/me wonders, what's the 411 with the 291. Does anyone know what causes it, and thus prevention methods?

It usually happens when:
1. You drop a lot of things or pick up a lot of things, esp. with extended drop command
2. A monster picks up a heap of stuff you dropped (but that's been mostly fixed since 1.0, the monsters now have a limit to the number of items they pick up)

You can prevent it by not dropping more than 10 items or so at a time. Or you can just back up your file periodically. I use option 2. :)
