My first winner.  People always say that the early game is hard for wizards;
I didn't find it so.

After doing the druid quest (found a magic missile spellbook early in the
CoC), I killed the old barbarian and did the Pyramid.  Then I did the
graveyard and Darkforge (I found a spellbook of lightning ball.  lucky find!)

The Water Temple followed, then the Tomb of the High Kings, and then the
ToEF.  I didn't have a ring of ice, so I had to stow away my girdle of
carrying.  I gained a lot of levels due to frost bolt.  Unlike the previous
character that I played, who was sacrificed on the altar, I was careful to
watch where I stepped. :)

Then I did the library, getting Acid Ball, which was a godsend on CoC50.  I
looked around for potions of deafness after that, since I unwisely used
fireball in the bee level (oops), before remembering that I had a recipe for
it.  One Demon Daisy and potion of carrot juice later, there was a dead

The rest of the events unfolded quickly after that.  Air temple was a joke,
earth temple presented no problems.  I then got needle and sting, but opted
not to use them.  The mana temple followed, with Nuurag falling to a series
of Acid Balls (but only after nearly killing me a couple of times.  bastard).
I got Thunderstroke as my uselessness gift on CoC49 (how fitting!).  I
then did the last level, avening the Dwarven Wizard who died there last year.

I missed a LOT of artifacts.  I suck.

I'm sold on gnomes.  Easy, easy exp gains, great starting stats (this guy
had 25 LE and 18 MA), and some nice skills.  I didn't exploit the crystals
of knowledge trick, mostly because I just wanted to get a win under my belt.

And there we have it.  I think I'll try to follow this up with a Gnomish
Necromancer. :)
