Yay, I finally turned a Dwarven Weaponsmith into an Avatar of Balance! Many thanks to everyone on the forums who helped me along the way. Here are the highlights of my adventure: I had a very difficult and frightening time in the Unremarkable Dungeon. First I encountered some vaults full of nasty monsters including vortices, and had to beg for Clamgaddin's help so many times that I felt him grumbling in anger. Then I found two rivers on consecutive levels. The first one passed between the up and down stairs, so I had no choice but to plow through it despite lacking the Swimming skill, and was virtually dead when I crawled out the other side. Fortunately, the second did not cut me off from the downstairs, but it did keep me away from a forge. My piety became even worse in the HMV, because I was pursued by two hostile farmers and one hostile goodwife, and killed one of them by accident, converting me to chaotic. Fortunately there was a lawful altar on UD:8, and after selling my junk and having a careful sacrificing session everything was sorted out (the altar and I were both neutral, and Clamgaddin was very pleased with me again). I disposed of Glod by reading a blessed scroll of familiar summoning in the Dwarven Halls, which got me an earth elemental which I ordered to kill him. I wasn't sure what I'd do with it afterwards, and was thinking of abandoning it in the Ogre Cave, but it quickly turned hostile and had to be killed - it was tough, but I survived. I had a few smithing sessions during the game, and created a very nice adamantium tower shield [+19, +6], but it got abandoned in favour of Protector. It took me rather a long time to find an amulet of life saving. I searched the Gremlin Cave, then drained every single pool in Darkforge, which gave me intrinsic free action but no wishes. It also wiped out all my unnatural aging (slightly annoying at the time, because I went from "grown-up" to "young", but came in handy later when I got aged by a ghost lord), cursed and doomed me, and lost me my teleport control. So after a period of teleporting around randomly and being attacked by steel golems, I escaped from Darkforge, ate a blink dog corpse I'd stashed in the High Mountain Village shop, and headed for the nearest altar to lift the cursing and dooming. Then I went back, explored the rest of Darkforge, and sold most of the stuff I found there. I continued the hunt for an amulet of life saving in the Tomb of the High Kings, then in the Rift. A pool there gave me permanent invisibility, and I also learnt several bolt spells. Now I was equipped to do the Bug Temple, and I did. After replenishing my supply of morgia roots, I put on a helm of water breathing and dived into the river to loot the water dragon's lair. I dealt with Blup's mum by reading a scroll of darkness then flying into a berserk rage and attacking her. To my surprise, she just stood there and let me kill her. I'd been expecting her to flee, as she did last time I tried that strategy, so I felt a bit guilty - but among the treasure she dropped was a ring of djinni summoning, so I also felt thrilled at having completed my quest for an AoLS. Khelavaster would probably not approve of the evil and cowardly way I obtained it, but I went back and saved him anyway. I encountered two Greater Undead Vaults in the deeper levels. I wondered whether it would be more sensible to flee, but I couldn't resist all the experience and treasure waiting for me in those vaults. I made it through by use of undead slaying ammo (and slaying ammo when that ran out), hanging on to the Water Orb to help me resist confusion, casting ball spells, and when I ran out of ball spells, zapping the wand of fireballs (100 charges) from the Bug Temple. After killing the Emperor Moloch and picking up the crumpled scroll, I went back to Terinyo for the Trident. I wondered whether I would be a wanted criminal for having murdered Blup's mum, but everyone was still friendly when I got there. I asked Khelavaster to summon the Trident, then tried talking to various people to find out if I was disapproved of. No-one got mad at me except for Blup, who yelled something like "Ye art a mommy killer! I kill you too!" and started attacking me - I did not try to defend myself for fear of turning chaotic, but fled to continue my quest. Killed Keriax with a wand of death, collected everything from my stash, and descended the Caverns of Chaos for the final time. I had a difficult time on D:50, getting surrounded by nasty monsters while I was trying to drink all my stat boosting potions, and when I had all 18 corruptions I decided it was time to head through the gate. Read all remaining SoCR, removed and dropped the Chaos Artifacts, wished for speed and headed for Andor Drakon. Went berserk with the Trident and beat on him until he died. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #.# ....# ## #### .## . ..# #. ## .#. # .. . .## . . #.. ## #.## #. #.##... #. ## #....## . ..# .. # ###.. ###.#. # #..#.j.# # # ## #..@# #..# ## .##.#j## #.# #.....###.. ## #####.# ##### ########## ## Alvin St:48 Le:41 Wi:84 Dx:99 To:87 Ch:33 Ap:76 Ma:75 Pe:48 N= DV/PV: 48/62 H: 1096(1150) P: 121(1350) Exp: 50/41294926 ChAoS Sp: 592 Blessed Invisible Bloated Berserk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Alvin Race: male Dwarf Class: Weaponsmith Eye color: brown Hair color: black Complexion: brown Height: 3'10" Weight: 85 pounds Scars: 4 Age: 101 (grown-up, 40 years of unnatural aging added in) Star sign: Dragon Birthday: 3/Dragon (day 153 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your parents are travelling adventurers. All the forces of Balance seem to be united behind them. You are lifted to the status of an Avatar of Balance and the tales of your deeds are spread all over Ancardia. Your deeds are recounted at camp fires and interpreted by philosophers and priests alike. The common man looks up to you and you slowly start to be revered as a minor power of Balance. After a few millennia have passed you are raised to the position of a demi-god to guard Ancardia from the forces of Chaos and Order forever. Under your guidance Ancardia becomes a balanced and happy world, enjoying its own freedom to be never again threatened by the unbalancing powers of the universe. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- His achievements during his adventures: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alvin, the dwarven weaponsmith, transformed into an avatar of Balance.
