Argarg's quest began auspiciously enough, finding seven league boots and a cursed girdle 
of carrying and 9 potions of water by the time he reached the altar in Dwarftown. On arrival 
there he promptly blessed the girdle but alas, only a few levels down a lowly hellhound 
scorched both the boots and the girdle with its breath. In a rage Argarg smote it but it was 
too late, his treasured items were gone and he would have to venture forth without them. 
Perhaps, he reasoned, this was a test and he would end up stronger for it. He should have 
seen this for the warning fate was sending him and packed up to go home while he still 
could...

Travelling a few levels down Argarg found himself entering a dark room in the old Dwarven 
Halls. Something which evidently had no problems with the darkness promptly began pummeling 
the crap out of him so he beat a hasty retreat to the previous level only to find himself 
being steadily persued by some sort of crystal golem, a nasty he'd never even heard of 
before before and wasn't entirely happy to be seeing now. 

Fleeing from its dogged persuit Argarg ducked into the living forest, traversing it to 
complete Thrundar's quest before heading back to Dwarftown. On the way back he briefly 
skirmished with the mighty creature again but fled from its barrage of blows, an inkling of 
an idea brewing in the back of his skull.

If he could complete Thrundarr's remaining quests he would gain access to the fabled mace of 
legend, Big Punch. Surely if there was a weapon short of a phase dagger that could chip the 
thing, the mighty lead filled mace would be it. Completing the quests in short order 
he claimed his prize and returned to face the golem, mighty mace in hand.

Sadly Big Punch didn't even leave a scratch on it and the golem was inflicting some serious 
pain in return so Argarg lured it back a few levels to Dwarftown, deciding that the wands in 
his possession were finally going to get a good workout. The thing persued him around the 
town, cold murder glowing in its eyes but Argarg managed to remain just beyond its grasp, 
blasting it over and over with magic missiles. Ten or so missiles later and the beast was 
finally a broken pile of diamond. Wiping the sweat from his brow Argarg descended further, 
wondering what further horrors the dungeon held to throw at him.

As he passed the entrance to the dwarven halls it struck Argarg that he had a blessed scroll 
of familiar summoning. Remembering the diamond monstrosity that he had finally managed to 
defeat he reasoned that perhaps reading the scroll in the place where he'd first met it 
might yield a powerful companion. Heading to the place, he read the scroll and was 
completely taken aback when a greater titan appeared before him, fresh from its usual 
activity of shaping worlds and ready to act as his personal bodyguard. Happily dubbing 
the titan Hermes, Argarg backtracked and the two battled their way through the living forest 
and down through a strange dungeon graveyard until finally they found a mysterious portal of 
dwarven manufacture which he resolved to ask Thrundarr about.

Thrundarr revealed that he would open the portal if Argarg would do him the favour of laying 
Griff Bloodaxe's spirit to rest, to which Argarg agreed and carried out with Hermes by his 
side. On the way back to the caverns the two stopped in at Darkforge. 

There Argarg finally got around to chatting to Hermes, which resulted in the following 
exchange:

"Oh my, I'm so lonely and need some company."
Do you want to spend some time with Hermes, the greater titan? [y/N] y
You spend some time with Hermes, the greater titan, who seems to enjoy your company.
You talk to Hermes, the greater titan.
Hermes, the greater titan, grunts: "I DO NOT CARE FOR THEE. OUT OF MY WAY!"

That ungrateful little bastard. If he wasn't so useful Argarg would've been tempted to try 
zapping the little bugger him into oblivion. Unfortunately after seeing him take out steel 
golems in one fell blow Argarg feared getting on his bad side too much to really consider it 
seriously. Perhaps Argarg should have realised at this stage that Hermes' apparent split 
personality could become a problem at a later date...

Even so, the pair's partnership progressed well, Hermes was now very experienced and had 
just destroyed the Snake from Beyond with one fell swoop. Argarg muttered angrily under his 
breath about sharing the experience around but Hermes silenced him with one fierce glare. 
Descending to the next level they headed out for their usual scouting and Argarg entered a 
dark room, experiencing a strange sense of deja vu as he did so, the crystal golem's 
terrible visage flashing through his mind.

Moments later he bumped roughly into something large that came back swinging and hit harder 
than the crystal golem ever had. Backing quickly out of the room Argarg saw that he was 
being persued by Hermes, who had evidently tired of their partnership and now had murder in 
his eyes. Terror washed momentarily over Argarg but was soon replaced with rage and he 
quickly formulated a plan. He would lure Hermes back to the altar they'd passed a few levels 
back and sacrifice him when he wasn't looking. It was an audacious plan and would be risky 
but it was doable. Maybe the gods would even crown him for bagging such a powerful being...

Taking advantage of Hermes' slow footspeed Argarg fled to prepare his cunning trap, mining 
the corridors of the previous levels until they were wide enough for two to walk abreast so
as to ensure that he didn't get held up in melee with rats or goblins as he lured Hermes 
back to the altar. Once all was prepared he returned and thumbed his nose at Hermes, who 
lumbered angrily after him. 

As they climbed the stairs to the previous level Argarg noted that Hermes was much quicker 
to climb stairs and always managed to have a free whack before he could once again outpace 
him. No matter he thought, it isn't far now. Running ahead he lured Hermes to the final set 
of stairs and ascended them. Sadly Argarg had forgotten to maintain his cowardly defensive 
posture and when Hermes caught him at the top of the stairs he rained blow after blow on 
poor Argarg until there was nought left but an icky smear on the ground (255 to -106 in one
go :( ).

The moral to this story: When you have such a powerful companion, wearing that amulet of
light in your backpack can be more of a life saver than even an amulet of life saving.
