I was lucky enough to get some good starting stats, but I came pretty close to dying early on in the game. Candle star sign was very useful throughout. After I got herbs for my other stats, and a few spells under my belt, this character was nigh-unstoppable. Despite never having won the game, I decided fairly early to go for an ultra ending. First stop holeinthewall, killed an outlaw, checked Barnabas' shop (nothing) and got pick pockets. Next was SMC as always, managed to get the blanket and found the down staircase. No nice weapons though. Killed Kranach, entered the druid dungeon and went to the bottom level to generate Keethrax while I was level 8. Found some great stuff: an adamantium broadsword, which served me for a long time, and a potion of cure corruption and *TWO* potions of gain attributes. Also found a neutral altar on DD:6, which made for a very easy precrowning after converting with the Kranach money. Sadly, I got the not-so useful hammer of the gods. Stuck with the sword after experimenting a bit with the hammer. Fulfilled Yergius' pickpocket demands. Came back, joined thieves guild, and sold the potions to Barnabas for safe keeping. Went through puppy cave. Nearly died to bees, but I ran away and prayed, then returned and laid down all applicable smack. Got the corpse, came back and sold it to Munxip. Went to the ID and killed some stuff for a little while to gain levels and weapon skills, and also found a few nice spellbooks - magic missile, frost bolt, and fire bolt, if memory serves. Came back out and descended the UD, where, for the first time I can remember, nothing of interest was generated, no shops, pools, altars. One forge, I think, which wasn't much good to me. I did however find a scroll of danger. I then emerged in the HMV to be confronted by a hostile ratling warlord, a jackalwere, and, yes, a stone giant lord, with my level of about 12. This was probably the toughest moment of the game, and I was damn glad for the time I had spent in the ID! The jackalwere was actually quite useful, as the jackals provided a buffer between me and the ratling warlord. The latter eventually fell to various bolt spells, but I had to pray twice for healing (thanking that altar again) because of the stone giant lord's thrown rocks. Fought my way out, escaped the village and waited in the wilderness to heal. By repeatedly returning, firing bolts, and escaping again, I was eventually able to kill them both. I then triumphantly entered the HMV proper only to nearly be killed by a farmer. Ran away, checked leggot's shop, where I sold the scroll of danger. Chatted to babayaga, left town. I then returned to the druid dungeon and killed keethrax, grabbed the torc and his corpse, which unfortunately rotted before I could get it to munxip. Received herbalism. Went to the CoC, won the first 19 arena fights, then found nothing of interest on the first few levels except a miscellaneous shop on D:1 (which stocked nothing interesting, and never restocked the entire game even when I moved all the stuff onto one square) and a chaotic altar on D:9. Spent a LONG time sacrificing everything I could find trying to get a second precrowning before eventually losing patience. In the big room, fixed a square of morgia roots and one of moss of mareilon. Also regrettably killed a wild cat by mistake. Got Si, went to dwarftown and did the first few dwarf quests (kill a large kobold, woohoo!) Gave the torc, scythe, mace, and hammer of the gods to the ratling. Trained up my toughness and dexterity (the former annoyingly only went to 18, because of my poor maximum, the latter went to 27) with herbs, and strength and learning with Garth. Went to outlaw town and bought detect traps, then on my way to the pyramid, at about level 16, I had the 'luck' to encounter a giant boar. I *just* killed it (those things are tough!) and sold its skull to Barnabas. Cleared out the pyramid without too much trouble using fire bolt, and had the great luck to find a phase dagger. Returned to finish Thrundarr's quests, including the Griff quest. I now used the sword of Nonnak for my main weapon, as I had quite a few spells and magic missile was becoming my main killer. Went to the gremlin cave, got the phial, climbing set and fluff balls. Gave the phial to the ratling, then spent a while in the Big room training my dagger skill before heading to Darkforge, which I cleared without too much difficulty with the phase dagger. Picked up everything, read blessed scroll of identify, and kept some nice eternium splint mail to replace my slightly obsolete elven chain mail, got the crown of science, and the staff of archmagi for the ratling. Drained all the pools(about ten of them!) and got no wishes. I did however pick up a nice set of intrinsics, including death ray & petrification resistance, and teleportitis, nice as I had already chowed on some blink dogs. Went back to dwarftown and gave the ratling the staff for his sixth artifact. Explored down to D:16 and wondered how I was going to save Kelly. Went to outlaw town, bought the potion of cure corruption, then went back to HMV and gave babayaga everything she wanted. Dropped the medal in the barbarian's glade on my way back, after having a little chat with the poor tiny girl, who by this time I imagine was really quite worried. Returned to dwarftown, and carefully converted myself to neutral at the altar, after which the dwarven mystic very kindly gave me four scrolls of chaos resistance. Stashed them, then did the courage quest while thinking what to next. After going on a fruitless ID dive, in which I nearly starved to death, I returned, descended a couple of levels below town, made a few water traps in a long corridor, locked the doors, and farmed gremlins. I must have spent about two hours doing this, then picked up everything of interest and identified. No amulets of life saving or wishers, but otherwise a load of great stuff - seven league boots, another phase dagger *two* swords of sharpness, a ring of ice, a ring of the fish (well, that's not usually spectacular but this game they were rare for some reason) and two potions of gain attributes. I also raised my sword skill a lot, unsurprisingly. I then went to find blup's mum (nothing great in the hoard so I left it alone), and decided to do the ToEF, being now I think at level 19. The lower levels didn't pose too much of a problem, just the dragon himself was tough, but I eventually killed him with a combination of magic missiles, a few dragon-slaying arrows, and finally berserking with sword of sharpness. Equipped the orb. Having trained all my stats to an acceptable level, I sought out the four potions of gain attributes I had stashed, blessed, and drank them all, then started on my other potions of -stat-. Still without amulet of life saving, I cleared out the tomb of the high kings - yielded nothing interesting. Somewhat heavy-hearted, I returned to my gremlin ranch for some more arduous looting. After what seemed like months more, finally one (the 3800th, actually) dropped a steel amulet! Overjoyed I positively ID'd it and gave it to Khelavaster. The six scrolls in return were most welcome, as my general tardiness, my carelessness in the tower, and the time spent on D:13 killing gremlins, had used up the four scrolls from earlier. I then remembered what I'd forgotten to do before, and got myself crowned neutral, having secured a square of stomafillia herbs in the CoC. With spectacular timing, I got given fire immunity. More useful was the very nice Holy Avenger Justifier, which took over from my sword of sharpness. From here on the game progressed a lot quicker. I killed the snake, stashed the orb and explored the way down to the Casino without much trouble. Spotted some very groovy shining silver bracers in the shoppe, which I bought, after hunting around for a girdle of greed - 1.6 million GP weighs a lot!. The Cat lord was a something of a problem - despite my having killed only about twelve cats in total, he wasn't too easy. Fortunately I had a very useful companion - Phil the greater earth elemental, from a blessed scroll of familiar summoning read on DH:2 - who dealt with him. Descended to the air temple. Phil had sadly been toasted by a tension room of ancient red dragons, silly me for forgetting we're not all so fortunate as to have fire immunity. I'd never been this far before, so I estimated the rough difficulty of the air temple as being to the ToEF what the ToEF was to water temple, and decided I probably wasn't ready. I noticed I had climbing and stealth at 100 and the two thin/light corruptions, so I chose the rift for my next port of call. I went and dropped all my junk make myself unburdened, and descended, confident in the strength of the rumour that falling was impossible with both corruptions, blessed climbing set, and climbing 100. This I discovered was false, and I was most aggrieved to lose some nice potions through falling. Hung around for some time killing things, then went to the library, and picked up a set of nice tomes, including death ray, acid ball, cure critical wounds, and of course, weird. I also found a very nice set of eternium plate mail of resilience. Left and traded weird tome for five scrolls of chaos resistance. I then decided on another ID dive, down to level 50. This ended up being very fruitful indeed - I ran into a tension room of great black wyrms on I:49. I was somewhat intimidated, but reassured by my blessed ring of the clear mind and my intrinsic acid immunity from a giant slug corpse a little earlier. Slaughtered them all with great ease, and didn't even lose any decent items. Wading through the river of black wyrm blood I checked the loot, and was delighted to find a wand of wishing with 5 charges! Carefully brought it back to dwarftown, blessed it, and wished for the following: 1. Alchemy. This was a bit stupid, as by now I was about level 34, too late (as it happened) to get it to 100. I might have been able to achieve it had I spent more time practicing it. 2. Food preservation, no regrets here. 3. Potions of gain attributes - this may have been unwise, as of course I only got one. Could have been better spent on scrolls of chaos resistance. 4. Girdle of giant strength - again no regrets. 5. Scrolls of education. what I was thinking, I just will never know. Yielded gemology, mining and training in dodge. hoorah. 6. Scrolls of chaos resistance, destroying the wand. Got 4 scrolls. I then cleared the air temple, finding it much easier than anticipated, and proceeded to the earth temple, which was ludicrously easy - the beast died to three hits of the Avenger. After this I (finally) received the rune-covered trident, which I then used to practice in preparation for the Rooster. Stashed the orbs. I decided next to do the unicorn quest. Chose to kill the white unicorn, and got 5 potions of gain attributes, which were put to good use. Next stop was the quickling tree, which may have been unwise, as my food preservation skill was only in the 70s at this point. Still, the corpses gave me intrinsic speed of 150, 170 including the very thin corruption, which was very nice indeed. Next on my list was Keriax, whom I killed with dragon-slaying arrows. Stashed crown. Descending further through the CoC, I took Sharad-Waador's quest, and spent a fun while splattering dragons, who by this stage were reminding me of the gremlins from earlier, so ineffectual were their attacks. Barney himself fell to three good pokes of the trident. Returned to the karmic wyrm and got Needle (or Sting, which is it? damned if I can remember). Next up was the mana temple, which was a little tougher than the other two, but still not hard - the only thing I took much damage from was death rays, but with three sources of resistance (intrinsic, bracers of war, and amulet) that was little trouble. Besides, by this stage of the game my hp regeneration was through the roof. I then spent a long (and ultimately ill-advised, corruption-wise) time after killing Nuurag-Varn (fortunately he had pushed his way to the front earlier) trying to clear the temple, but to no avail, as the chaos wizards simply sat at the back summoning extremely experienced chaos servants. Got bored and left, stashing four out of five orbs and the crown and medal of chaos.I then returned to the blue dragon caves to level up some more. When I got to level 45, I left and trekked all the way back to the assassin prince, and took the filk quest. I now had to descend to level 43, as I'd been a little careless about killing outlaws. Found filk and killed him with one unerring arrow. Killed the assasin prince for needlesting part 2, returned to the mad minstrel, then entered the scintillating cave. Having found everything previous to this somewhat easy, (molochs were dying in one hit, greater molochs in two or three) I felt sure that the cave would provide some challenge, filled as it supposedly was with 'incredibly hard' monsters like Emperor Liches. Found one of these, rather nervously attacked with the trident, and destroyed it in one hit. Descended to the Emperor moloch's lair, where he fell like so many of his brethren, to that magic number, three hits of the trident. This put me on level 50. Returned to Kelly in Terinyo and gained big Red. I now, quite rightly perhaps, felt unstoppable. As if I wasn't indomitable enough already (mastery with polearms, 65 strength, 50ish dexterity and toughness, 170 speed) I had a whole heap of boosting potions in my pack. What I hadn't counted on was my own stupidity. Descended to D:48 and filled the anomalies. Crossed D:49. Entered D:50 and began killing balors and the like with great ease. Here I made mistake number one: I panicked about corruption (I had incredibly used up about 20 scrolls of chaos resistance and a few potions from the orb guardian corpses) and read one of my only two remaining scrolls. I then immediately realised that I needed to be extremely corrupted to survive passage through the gate, and the scroll I had just read was therefore an almighty waste and should have been saved for the Chaos plane. I then had to wait around on the D:50 battlefield until I reached the extremely corrupted level before diving through the gate.Mistake number two: Knowing that the medal was autocursing, I had earlier looked in my pack and seen that I had no scrolls of uncursing. I unbelievably failed to think of the magical writing set gathering dust in my tools section. I then hit upon the bright idea of using a potion of holy water to remove it. Of course, when I tried this, it failed, because, of course, the damn medal contains the essence of chaos and corruption, and I ended up with a nice pot of raw chaos. I now had no option but to fight Andor Drakon with a huge great lump of extra corruption around my neck, not to mention being cursed and doomed. Mistake number three: I had removed my girdle of giant strength earlier while fighting blue dragons, scared of getting it shredded. I forgot to put it back on. On arrival, I read my last scroll, and looked in my pack at my array of stat boosting potions. I realised I had very little time indeed to kill Andy, and I decided that I wouldn't have enough time to drink them all before fighting him. I had to find a balance between drinking enough to kill him quickly, and not wasting time drinking them and getting more corrupted by the second. Of course, if I'd had that extra scroll, and if I hadn't been wearing the stupid medal, I could have easily drunk them all with time to spare. I went toe to toe, and did pretty well under the circumstances, and took him to the 'severely wounded' level. I wasn't in any danger of dying the old fashioned way, as in the time I fought him he only hit me once or twice, bringing me to about 950 out of 1106 hp, and of course I had blessed extra/ultra healing potions. Before I could kill him though, I succumbed to chaos. @ ---> j :) ---> :( So, victory at ADOM eluded me once again. Of course, had I not decided to go for an ultra, I could easily have read both scrolls on D:50, drank all my potions, thrown away the stupid chaos artifacts and wiped out the entire contents of the level at leisure with Needle+Sting, or the TotRR, or Holy Avenger + shield. In fact, in the short time that I was on D:50, I killed seven out of the nine balors and took about 100 hp of damage, and that's without any stat boosting. So . . . can I count that as a win? wow. that story ended up being longer than I intended . . . heh.
