This was a slightly challenging game: my character never learned any
new skills during the course of the game. For a non-elven Barbarian, this
means no Literacy and no Healing, among others.

I had tried an illiterate dwarven Barbarian without the healing skill in g9,
and that character was skewered by a stone ooze on CoC46; so i assumed that
such a game was definitely finishable. I took up the concept with this
character in g12, only that the race was Gnome this time and i decided
not to learn any new skills *at all*. I had hoped for the ring of the
Master Cat, but one wild cat managed to impale herself on my sword...

Nothing really uncommon happened to this character; all the unusual
difficulties were encountered because of the self-imposed restrictions:
between the top level of the ToEF (where i had to burn almost all my
blessed extra healing potions) and a dragon pit on CoC 32 (where i found
my first regeneration item) the character was noticably below the maximum
hitpoint rating; in the dragon pit, the max hitpoints went from the
mid-300s to somewhere above 600, while the current hitpoints stayed
around 300; the level-related hitpoint gains barely neutralized the per-
manent pounding. After i had collected my regeneration stuff, hitpoints
weren't much of a problem any more.
The lack of literacy was a permanent problem; to me, scrolls were but
a minor source of cash; it was especially aggravating that the dwarven
mystic gave me four blessed scrolls of chaos resistance and disappeared
before i could tell him to put them were the sun doesn't shine.
I never quaffed any unknown potions (fearing that i might stumble upon
an education one, which could have ruined my nice plan) and thus
arrived on the icy level with ~20 different unknown potions; after i
had crossed half the level i had determined that none of them was the
potion of uselessness ;)
I never got a full identification of my stuff or a full uncursing;
something i'm kinda used to from "normal" games. Identification
had to use the roundabout way of selling to shops and buying back
(or just trying out), uncursing was only possible via holy water (i didn't
waste prayers on uncursing).
The other skills weren't much of a problem: i easily emulated the
Detect Traps skill with a few wands of trap detection and dug around
doors as a rule; i also was doing enough damage without the tactics
skill and never missed Backstabbing or Courage.

As to the number of saves: When i play ADoM seriously, i usually spend
a whole evening on one character, playing deep into the night (which
i tend to regret in the morning); and since i'm somewhat of a veteran, i
don't need all that much wall-time to produce a winner.
