This was my first victory playing a non-wizard character, although I was a disappointed at not
having a crack at Andor Drakon.

The early game produced a tremendous amount of luck: I did the carpenter quest to get healing and then
took out Kranach. The final level of the VD produced a chaos altar and I wasted no time dropping my
alignment and getting pre-crowned with Wyrmlance. I moved onto the puppy quest rather than risk the
SMC (I was already level 8) and found a lawful altar on the open cavernous level! Once again I
sacced like mad, with the high monster generation ensuring that I didn’t have to wait long between sacs.
Despite the odd breeder scare (including an explosion of white worms that threatened to force me
off the level!) I eventually earned my second pre-crowing gift: the emerald dagger!!! With one of
the best weapons in the game (and arguably the most appropriate weapon for an assassin) I quickly
completed the puppy quest and, despite being level 13, decided to try the SMC. It became immediately
obvious that this was not the right move and I was forced to retreat and cross the wilderness.
Fortunately I was able to complete the SMC a little later in the game having secured invisibility,
teleportation and teleportation control.

After I reached the CoC the game progressed in a reasonably straightforward manner: I quickly
completed Thrundarr’s quests (the required first kill was a goblin!!!), the pyramid and the dwarven
graveyard. Unfortunately, the graves in the dwarven graveyard did not reveal anything of worth.

By this point I had built up significant prowess in the use of daggers (using the emerald dagger
exclusively and an adamantium dagger prior to that) so I decided to take a shot at Darkforge. To be
honest I never expected to make much of a dent on the steel golems, so I was very surprised to be
proven wrong! The enhanced critical strike ability of the emerald dagger wore down the steel golems
with surprising ease and a ring of regeneration ensured that I never had to wait long while healing in
between my hit-and-run assaults. Kherab’s stash of weapons proved useless, but I was most delighted to
find suits of blue and red dragon scale mail in his armour stash! After picking up the Crown of Science
I decided to drink from the pools in the hope of getting a wish in order to save Khelly. My early good
luck, however, had run out and no wish was forthcoming – although I did receive some welcome
supernatural qualities (including sleep and death resistance, permanent invisibility, as well as
teleportitis that complemented the ring of teleport control I had purchased earlier). On the down
side I was also aged, doomed and cursed, but I was able to use the last two advantageously by
finding a giant boar much more quickly than I normally would have. In fact, I would locate three of
these rare monsters before the game’s end and the usually problematic giant boar skull quest was
easily completed. Thereafter a co-aligned altar quickly removed the dooming and cursing.

At this point in the game I had to choose between the ToEF, the bug-infested temple and the TotHK.
Deciding that the latter was the least dangerous option I quickly descended and defeated the skeletal
king with little difficulty. Having secured the RotHK I knew it was time to face the music and attempt
the ToEF. The red dragon scale mail provided critical fire immunity, but I was worried about equipment
damage with only a lone blessed fireproof blanket for protection. However, it was really the ACW that
I was concerned about: no demon- or dragon-slaying ammo had materialised, I had no confusion resistance
and I only possessed a few wand of cold charges! I knew that I was going to have to defeat it in melee,
but even with Wyrmlance I knew I was taking a huge risk. The final showdown was an epic encounter: as
the ACW retreated and rendered me useless with confusion, I was forced to engage numerous fire
elementals and fire demons before finally cornering my foe. Eventually the ACW fell, but I suffered
much more corruption than I would have wanted and was forced to pray a number of times for healing
after exhausting all of my blessed potions of extra healing.

Still hoping for a shot at an ultra ending I traded the ACW’s corpse in for a PoCC from Guth’Alak. By
this point I had accumulated all of the Old Crone’s items (having picked up the scroll of danger and
wand of monster creation earlier following some more good luck), but an AoLS refused to materialise
anywhere! With a heavy heart I had to give up on saving Khelly and quickly descended the CoC with
the RotHK and orb of elemental fire.

Disappointed at the impossibility of an ultra ending, I adopted a very direct approach for the rest of
my game and forewent some of the optional areas in the game including the secret library, Keriax, the
minotaur maze and the quickling tree. Despite my best efforts I had been unable to avoid slaying a cat
and missed out on the RotCL as a result (another disappointment since I usually play cautiously enough
to obtain it). The Casino Shop didn’t produce anything exceptional and I was surprised not to find
any greater vaults throughout my descent through the CoC. Neither the water or wind orb guardians
proved particularly troublesome, but I decided to tackle the blue dragon caves (and secure the twins)
before taking on the earth and mana orb guardians. Wyrmlance made short work of everything in the blue
dragon caves, although Barney was much harder than I had anticipated (dragon-slaying ammo STILL had
not materialised!!!) Wyrmlance took him down eventually, but I used up all of my assorted healing
potions and an AoLS (that I eventually found post-Khelly) – and still had to pray for divine
healing several times!

The loot that I picked up in the blue dragon caves didn’t contain anything exceptional (much to my
chagrin – at the very least I would have liked a RoGS, WoWi or a pair of SLBs). However, I finally had
some dragon-slaying ammo and decided to take on Sharad-Waador after receiving needle. Blessed dragon-
slaying ammo combined with Wyrmlance was too much for the big guy, although I was disappointed at not
receiving a corpse :-(

The wagonloads of gold that the blue dragon caves guarantee was more than enough to get crowned as a
champion of order with Death’s Blade as my (useless) crowing gift (I was hoping for Far Slayer). I then
tore through the Assassin’s Guild and, although the Assassin Prince was tougher than expected, sting was
finally united with its twin. With the twins in hand I was virtually unstoppable and scummed the bug
infested temple for corpses to get my Dex up to 99 (the scrolls of chaos resistance were most
welcome as well!) I also took out Blup’s mom for kicks (and to vent my disappointment at not
being able to test my mettle against Andor Drakon :-)

The twins also proved too much for the earth orb guardian and his minions, although I cautiously
opted for human slaying ammo to defeat Nuurag-Vaarn (with surprising ease). The final level of the CoC
was a breeze: the twins obliterated everything other than the balors and Festinarius who I cut
down from afar with demon-slaying ammo. A wand of destruction ensured that the chaos gate would not be
re-opened anytime soon. Finally, before leaving the Drakalor Chain, I had my corruption cleansed by
Yrruir (having slain Riurry earlier in the game) and assassinated Hotzenplotz for Tywat Pare (which I
had forgotten to do earlier).
