This victory is dedicated to our tree hugging buddies, the druids.

Fluid the gray elven druid was able to close the gate in under 30000
game-turns. This sets a personal record for me, and took about 8 hours
of real life game time, over the coarse of two days.


This game had no scumming of any kind. No scumming the ID for items,
no gremlin exploiting, no piety abuse, no stat scumming by means
of starvation or sickness, no casino gold or dragon gold doubling,

Additional restrictions were: No visiting the Infinite dungeon, no 
praying, no saving, and had to close the gate in under 40000 moves.


Druids are powerful (with the right spells) and are very fun to
play, but I noticed on one of the Hall of Fame's forums, that druids 
are considered one of the most neglected classes. They are certainly
one of the most under-represented classes in the winners section of 
the Hall of Fame. So I decided to try to get a druid in to the top 
ten. Maybe ADOM's nature loving class won't remain so neglected, if
more players see how powerful they can be.

To get a druid into the top ten, I knew I would have to limit the
game-turns to under 40000. I tried several times with gray elves 
and even a troll. A couple of elves died on D:50 for lack of 
offensive spells, and one died due to Fistinarius going into a 
blind rage (quite unfair really!). The troll was also doing 
surprisingly good, but got the 'poison hands' corruption while in 
the fire tower. I'll skip the details, but he had to pray because 
of starvation, thus ruining that character for me. 

This character though was quite lucky. He found two stable patches of
morgia/moss on UD:1. Gathered the herbs all at once, but I used them
steadily throughout the game to avoid wasting game-turns. Once, while 
eating morgia, my finger slipped on the keyboard, and I wound up eating
a blessed stomafillia by mistake. As a result, I couldn't eat morgia for
a long while after that, kinda slowed things down a bit. While in the 
UD I also found the spellbooks of lordly might, cure light wounds, and
etherial bridge (teleport) + blink dog corpse. I usually skip the UD, 
but for this character, it paid off BIG TIME! 

Upon leaving the High Mountain Village, I went straight to Darkforge,
to teleport raid it. I collected all the weapons/armor and equipped a 
suit of white dragon scale mail plus a 'hateful' eternium two-handed 
sword (Pretty good equipment for the early game!). I sold the rest 
upon reaching Dwarftown. My quest monster was a ghul, so I couldn't
have asked for easier. I did the Griff quest, then pyramid, then the 
remaining dwarf quests (to get the fireproof blanket for the tower).

Then the water orb... Usually getting the water orb is the easiest in 
the game, but this time it was horrible. I was cheerfully bashing the 
Snake from Beyon while standing in darkness, and he panicked. He ran
like a scared rabbit, and for some reason, I couldn't get him to come 
back and fight me, by casting bolt spells at him. I had to chase after
him all through the level, to finish him off. Finally cornering him
by the up staircase of all places. It seemed like it went on forever!

After the water orb mess, I re-surfaced and got the Ring of the High
Kings, then cleared Darkforge and finally the tower. The tower was no
problem, because I was fortunate enough to find an extra spellbook of
devine wrath in a tension room. For druid's that DON'T luckily find 
that extra offensive spellbook, the tower can be a real problem. I 
also find it VERY frustrating that druids can't recieve the spellbook
of nether bolt (frost bolt) from Guth'Alak. They instead recieve a ring
of minor elemental mastery + bracers of toughness. I find both to be of
small use. When playing as a druid, I never do the druid quest, because
the rewards are so lame. I think Guth'Alak should give BETTER, not worse
rewards to a druid, considering HE IS a druid!

Anyway, I then teleported myself back through the CoC. I stopped to 
visit the dwarven mystic while at N+ allignment. I got lucky, he gave 
me 4 scrolls of chaos resistance (for a change). That was a lucky break,
when playing for limited turns, you most likely won't save Khelly, and
the library/bug temple takes too many turns to think about. I passed the
eternal guardian without a fight. Usually I try to kill at least one
incarnation, for the sorely needed experience points, but I didn't want
to take chances with this character, as he had everything needed for a
win. I decided to try to get some experience points by fighting in the
'truly excited' dungeon levels. Greater vaults, are things that I tend
to avoid, due to the number of game-turns they can eat up. But this guy
was doing so nicely on turns, now about 20000, that he could afford it.

I delved deeper into the CoC picking up a horde of junk along the way.
When I had enough junk, I returned to the surface via the shortcut.
I teleported my way to dwarftown, sold the junk, and got my N crowning.
Then I teleported back down the CoC by way of the shortcut. My final 
dive. The air temple was the easiest in this game. I cast darkness, 
made my way to the boss, and took him out with my two-handed sword.
Almost too easy. The earth temple was a bit harder though, due to the
fact that I wanted to test my PC's melee skills. I actually LUCKED OUT
and found a rain of sorrow spellbook (acid ball), but it was more
challenging to melee them. I lured the monsters up the stairs and took
them out by 1's and 2's, which is pretty safe. I picked up a couple of
corruptions doing this, but I had the scrolls, so I didn't mind.

The Archmage was easy. A wand of door creation + rain of sorrow = a 
very dead Archmage. Lost a point of Mana, by casting out of HP's, but
you can't have it all. D:50 was pretty easy. When entering it, I was
exp. level 33, coming out I was level 50. I handled the mutants/serants
and such by casting darkness and thrashing them in melee. The WMoPC died
by devine wrath (lightning bolt). The balors were all rained down upon
with much sorrow. Upon leaving the chain, I noticed that I had picked 
up a RoDS somewhere along the way. I breifly thought about wishing for
some high level monsters to kill, to inflate my score by means of extra
experience points. I decided against it, because in a way, I thought 
that would be kinda scummy. 

The funniest part of the game was after I had closed the gate. I had to 
kill every monster in D:50 to reach exp. level 50. Fistinarius was the
last. Upon kiling him, I recieved the message 'you can now resist chaos
by %10. This is AFTER closing the gate! Just BARELY BEFORE leaving the 

It occured to me, that, combined with 'regenerating PP's faster while
in the wilderness', 'being immune to weather effects', 'the ability to 
summon major animals for the cost of 1d3 mana points', and regeneraing
HP's faster while in the wilderness, makes the druid class powers the
worst in the game. What say you?
