This character played throughout the game as true berserker. When he first entered Terinyo, he instantly removed all armour items and set the Tactics to Berserk. The Tactics dial was never touched again, and the only times i put on armour stuff were four instances of wearing thick gauntlets for eating and picking up potions while plagued with poison hands and 300 turns of wearing the Crown of Science in an empty wilderness area (to check whe- ther or not it corrupts the wearer); everytime this character interacted with monsters or NPCs in any way whatsoever, he was a True Berserker. A fortune cookie message claims "They say that true Berserkers fight naked."; i noticed that "naked" in this case means you're not allowed to wear a hel- met, body armour, girdle, cloak, gauntlets and boots; everything else is o.k., including shields. True Berserkers gain an additional +10 bonus to damage, but they are not prompted whether to attack or not when bumping into a peaceful critter: crossing Terinyo or the Dwarven Village can quickly turn into disaster if you don't know about this feature. In addition, true Berserkers are extremely vulnerable, since they have to get along without almost all sources of protection early in the game - only few characters manage to get their fingers on bracers, amulets or rings of protection early on; thus monsters with special attacks such as paralysis are extremely dangerous for the low-level Berserker. By pure luck, i somehow managed to acquire intrinsic fire resistance during a tour to the Banshee, as well as finding a hostile blink dog in a tension room on the Banshee's level: that blink dog summoned a bunch of friends; so i gained teleport control, but almost blew my alignment - which would have been a bit of a problem, what with me being champion of Morodwyn already. I resorted to invisibility to fool the remaining 5 or so Blinkers and went to the ToEF; here, i once again played around with invisibility to get to the Wyrm, blasted it with a stun ray and felled it with 2 dragon-slaying arrows. A red dragon pit around level 35 of the caverns of chaos produced heaps upon heaps of loot, and a Greater Vault filled with giants gave my Dwarf Purifier and Protector. The Mana Temple was a bit of a problem: i had to use an amulet of light to avoid standing in the dark, i wielded Death's blade to counter the most devastating of Nuri's spell weapons, i wore a ring of invisibility to avoid attracting the attention of the eyes, Chaos Wizards, and -worst of all- Annihilators, and also had to wear a ring of see invisible to actually be able to see Nuri. This meant that i didn't have confusion resistance, and the first time he managed to confuse me, i barely recovered in time to make my retreat into the corridor before he could close into melee range; when Nuri entered the corridor, i swapped my ring of see invis. against one of mental stability and blindly shot humanoid slaying ammo into the place in which i guessed he was standing until i suddenly gained two levels ;) This was the last place in which i used invisibility, and i finished CoC 50 by sealing off the Chaos Mutants and shooting most of the corrup- ting monsters from a distance; i also burnt most of my offensive wands by wildly firing them along the corridors leading into the lever rooms. Fortunately, i had stocked enough demon slaying ammo to nail the Balors without having to melee them. I meleed the Ghost Lords and some of the Chaos Mutants with Purifier+Protector, and of course got hit from time to time, netting about 55 years of extra age and one corruption. Because of the special Barbarian powers (lvl40: some extra damage when fighting as true Berserker; lvl50: reduced energy cost for melee as true berserker) i could play hit-and-retreat with considerable success. Thanks to the scale skin and unholy aura corruptions, my armour rating on CoC 50 was about 25/30, and i also had the super-lightweight corruption, meaning a good deal of extra speed - for a total speed of about 140, i believe. It was a fun game, and although it was challenging, it wasn't unreasonably difficult.
