All of them elves - high or dark ones. Hey, I play other races too! So here it goes - The Story of Glurp the High Elven Archer Glurp! What a nice name for an elven archer. Well, I must admit that 'Glurp, the orcish barbarian' might sound just a little bit better. Still... love the name. Incredibly crappy initial stats (look at the background). Initial Le of 10 - despite me putting everything into it during the questions. Initial Pe of 14. (What kind of archer is he? a blind one?) Started in the SMC, got the blanket and made a good guess about the location of downstairs. Somehow forgot to write down the first kill - doesn't happen often to me these days. Killed Kranach in under 10 days, got the corpse, too (and that's without Food Preservation). Killed Hotzy and his orcs. Lawful altar on VD6. Got Healing, got crowned with Fire Immunity and Sun's Messenger. Wow! Doesn't get much better than that. Went to the PC, had some trouble with rivers (didn't have a lot of carrot juice for that lil' blue freak). Wasted a lot of time on Bridge Building, but to no avail. Decided to rely on divine help. Got to Clvl11, went for a postcrowning. Got there real fast, but, YIKES! - got THE tome. Hastily brought it to Barnabas in the tips of my fingers. Got something like 5,000 gp. Well, I didn't want to do a second postcrowning, but Alsophocus was sooo disappointing... Dived to I10. RNG wanted me to prove myself worthy of the SM, so it was quite adventurous. Dark tension room? full of black wizards and dark elven priestesses? Gee, nice try ;-) Escaped Strained! and Clvl14, did a second postcrowning, but it wasn't worth it either - Whirlwind. Well, not a bad artifact actually, it's just that usually I do not use rocks... Drank from the pool on PC2. Dried on a first sip. Barnabas didn't have a SoId, so I had to guess. Well, the biggest heap of scrolls was what I needed, indeed... Finally got Swimming from Blup. Went to the UD, a couple of pools, a river, some herbs, a couple of scroll shops. After the HMV did the Pyramid. Simple (I've found a cloak of invisibility somewhere). Also by this time I had BoTo +4, which were of great help. Went to the CoC. Another river, passed Big Cave using that cloak of invisibility. Thrundarr's first quest - a claw bug. Took me some time, but finally the Big Cave produced one (well, two, actually). Found 7LB somewhere (the only pair - lasted the whole game). Animated Forest was easy with invisibility (if boring). Never visited the DH this time, btw. Found Khelly, no AoLS, no RoDS/WoWi. Cleared the cave, completed the Arena quest (Arena level only had one dealer of the cooked lizards, which caused me some food trouble in the early middle game). Killed the demon (very easy). Got TC somewhere (the only blink dog corpse in the game I've seen). Went to the dusty dungeon, got the wand. Never visited the ???? level. Went to the Graveyard, absolutely trivial with the SM. Got the SoCR and Rolf's Companion (used it for the rest of the game - I really needed that To). Found a PoCC somewhere but had to spend it on my first corruption - stiffened muscles. Tried a pool in the lower CoC, but it dried on a first sip too. Damn! what's with those pools? Went to the TotHK. Inivisibility helped on those cavernous levels. WoC (4) made bridge building obsolete. The king himself took a single undead slaying arrow. Went to the DF, easy again. Didn't even need the construct slayers - did enough damage with normal arrows. Vaults: crap as usual. Ten pools, and since the level just above the forge had lawful altar, decided to try for a wish. Lost TC, got Teleportitis, got Wish from the sixth or seventh pool. Wished for an AoLS. Decided to do a little more drinking - not for a wish, but for the TC. Got lucky - ninth pool gave TC. Saved Khelly, dived to the wall of flames. Water Temple had river, but still, quite a cakewalk. Did the Gremlin Cave. Got the phial, but left it quite messy. Trained Concentration with phial. Decided to do the Rift. (Usually I would go there much later on, but I was afraid of ToEF, either, - and I had the needed skills even without Yergius.) Lost some stuff, but nothing too important. RL3 had a horde of molochs. Killed them all with normal arrows. Dropped a couple of hulking armors that I couldn't get with me... Damn... On my way back from RL1 the same RL3 generated a greater chaos servant. I paused for a second, remembering what I could about those critters, then fired an arrow at him. And failed to hurt him. What the hell?!, I thought, and fired another arrow. And failed to hurt him. Then looked at him and saw that he had a PV of several millions. Damn. My heart sank. I decided that even if this doesn't crash the game, all the other GCSs are gonna be the same (unkillable, to put it simple). And I didn't even have a backup. Luckily, it seems that that GCS was the only crazed monster in the game. I just escaped the level and went to the Library. A SoCR, and some nice books (Farsight, SoA, Teleportation). Got the weird tome, but lost some To reading the books. Got Courage, and Literacy was maxed out by delivering the tome to the MM. Did the ToEF (had RoIce from somewhere). Quite unremarkable. Mosters at the top level were quite a wimps. THE worst thing in the ToEF were those red worms. Sometimes their breeding was getting a little out of control, but a few charges of my WoIce fixed that. Skipped the Mazes - didn't need the AotME, and didn't need those potions. Went to the Casino. Crap. Lost some more To playing the slot machines. Now I was back at the initial value despite training with morgia roots. BoTo and the RC helped a lot. Went back to surface. Found the WDC and decided to kill Blup's Mom. A couple of dragon slayers took care of her for me. Clvl32 and... Whoops! No RCT, 'cause I forgot to talk to her and inform Blup. Oh well. I didn't need that fork anyway. The RC and a good shield worked better for me. Decided to do some polypiling. Had 5 PoEx. Blessed 'em. Went to D: 8 and started with 5 rings of stun resistance. Ended with 14 ordinary rings. Damn. I couldn't believe it. Those MUST be some OTHER rings! No, those were RoDSes indeed. I was a little stunned. First time this worked for me, and - and 14 wishes! Damn. I decided to save 5 for later and burn the rest. Wished for GoGS, Athletics, Find Weakness, Food Preservation, Herbalism, Alchemy and crystals of knowledge. Went to Terinyo and wished for a cute dog. Then, using potions of boost learning, read the books of SoA, Farsight and Teleportation. Entered the wilderness and wished for emperor moloch. Got 30+ greater molochs. Killing them (with normal arrows) skyrocketed me to Clvl47. Got some hulking armors, too. 90 days mark passed around here. Went past bunnies, killed the Cat Lord (a couple of humanoid slayers, and Clvl49), dived to D: 47. Damn, no greater vaults AGAIN - this is my third victory in a row without greater vaults :-( Found a RoDS somewhere, though (as if I didn't have enough already), and a lesser red dragon vault around D: 41 (almost funny with that lvl 50 power) yielded the Wyrmlance. Oh. Might come in handy in the BDC. If I do go there at all... At Clvl50 went to the Bugcave. Easy, and a lot of Dx/speed. Decided to skip the quickling tree altogether. Didn't want to waste my time, and didn't need the boots. The Big Cave was pacified with green worms (and an occasional Acid Vortex) somewhere earlier in the game, and it had morgia roots. I wanted stoma, too, so I wished for Gardening, - but 2 herb seeds and five holy waters didn't create even a *single* herb patch. Air Temple took some thinking. In the end I equipped artifacts only, took my oh-so-useless Whirlwind and earthquaked the level above the Temple. Oh well. I hate using rocks, but this time it was the thing to do. Easy. Cleared the Earth Temple - absolutely trivial. Breezed through the Unreal Cave System (Sharad-Waador wanted to say something but I just cried 'Later! later!' and disappeared towards the Mana Temple). So, the MT. I must say that it was the easiest MT ever. That lvl 50 power is incredibly useful. Nothing could stand in my way. D: 48, wished for potions of uselessness - had none. D: 49, uselessness gift - staff of the archmagi. Damn! It seems that the only two highlights of the game were the SM and those 14 RoDSes... D: 50, somehow I teleported into the main chamber too early (don't know what happened), awakening all the baddies, but it was all too simple anyway. I had a WoDestruction (4) from somewhere, so the levers were not a problem. The last balor on the level gave me grandmastery in Bows. I considered doing the BDC, or hunting for Filk, but in the end decided against it. I just cleared my corruption with SoCRs (didn't even need those unicorns) and finished the game. In the end, nice game, although by the Air Temple I was already a little bored. HE archers are absolute killers, and wishing for emperor moloch early is advisable - their lvl 50 power is incredible. Don't even need the SM - sure, it takes care of undead, and is quite powerful, but a decent long bow of accuracy wouldn't be a lot worse. Some stats: - *DAMN!* No greater vaults AGAIN! - PoCCs: 2 randoms drops, both used - SoCRs: 6 Khelly + 5 MM + 3 BUGCAV + 1 HMV + 2 random drops = 17, 9 used, 8 left - 16 wishes: 1 from a DF pool, 1 random drop RoDS, 14 RoDSes polypiled on D: 8 (2 pools left in Darkforge, and a couple more in the UD) - 13 wishes used: AoLS, GoGS, Athletics, Find Weakness, Food Preservation, Herbalism, Alchemy, crystals of knowledge, cute dog, emperor moloch, fletchery sets (got 5+8+6+8), Gardening, potions of uselessness - Only 5 random artifacts: Sun's Messenger - crowning black tome - first postcrowning Whirlwind - second postcrowning Wyrmlance - lesser red dragon vault around D: 41 staff of the archmagi - uselessness ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Glurp St:39 Le:29 Wi:17 Dx:63 To:37 Ch:13 Ap:19 Ma:26 Pe:23 L+ DV/PV: 59/42 H: 757(757) P: 286(286) Exp: 50/38517232 DrCh Sp: 146 Blessed Bloated Strained! They loved you and cared for you, although you had to hunger more than once. As a child you had to survive pretty harsh times since your parents seemed to have run out of luck. Their wealth was ever-declining and times were very hard. In your youth you became seriously ill and suffered for many years. When your disease finally was cured you were left weakened, both physically and spiritually, and bereft of the joys of youth. As a young adult you had to work a lot to finance your apprenticeship.
