------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Goblin Maybe started off going to the pass cave, where to his great surprise he
saved the cute dog without much trouble at all. He spent the early going
splattering everything with his standard-issue heavy club. He did the SMC, being
still only level 5. He tried to find Kranach but couldn't, did the village dungeon,
and then journeyed to the CoC. A neutral altar on S:3 converted him, happily. He
decided to return to the villages for some healing and trap-detecting training. He
then dived into the unremarkable dungeon and found two shops (wands and rings) and
two or three lesser vaults. He came away with a nice adamantium mace and a [+12, +4]
medium crystal shield. (!) He executed Hotzy with a wand of fire and a few sharp
blows to the head and converted himself to lawful with the amulet of order on the
way down to Dwarftown. He was even lucky enough to find two patches of stomafillia
herbs, which he could harvest clumsily even with no knowledge of herbalism. He
completed all of the elder's main quests with little difficulty (even encountering
Whatshisname the minotaur in the arena instead of a certain ogre magus). The
greater demon drained 3 points off his strength and toughness (among others), to his
irritation, but he sucked it up and made his way off to the Pyramid with Big Punch.
He made his way through by walk-searching at every step.
Upon entering Rehetep's chamber, he noticed to his great joy *intense sarcasm* that
the welcoming party included a dark green F, which was, indeed, a gorgon. He
immediately gulped down his potion of invisibility and hoped for the best. Sure
enough, the gorgon seemed to not see him. Several blasts from his wand of fireballs
cleared out most of the enemy party. Then his invisibility wore off. *gulp* He
took a moment to glance through his inventory. A potion of exchange and a potion of
confusion caught his eye as possible saviors, as well as a wand of webbing. He also
had a couple of unidentified amulets. Then he looked around and saw that,
unbelievably, a mummy had dropped another potion of invisibility. He stepped over
and picked it up. Then a doppleganger lord reached him and threw poor Goblin
Maybe's mind into confusion. Finally he managed to stumble clear, with the gorgon
only a couple of spaces away at this point, and quickly blessed and drank the
potion. He ran straight to the stairs and descended to safety.
He splattered his way through the dwarven graveyard without any trouble. Then he
practiced his bridge-building on the rivers in the UD. He checked in with the old
barbarian and discovered that he'd finally killed another 20 of his first kill,
whatever it was (my only guess was goblins, hence Goblin Maybe). Then, having
spotted a pack of chaos servants on his previous trip down past Dwarftown, and
having a strange premonition that he should make every effort to find an amulet of
life saving before proceeding farther, he decided to give Darkforge a go. He found
that he was just barely tough enough to deal with the steel golems. At the pools,
he picked up and lost various stuff. Unfortunately, he suddenly felt corrupted by
Chaos and lost a lot of weight, becoming instantly Strained! All was forgiven,
however, a moment later: "What do you wish for?" Unfortunately, he also came up
with 19 years of unnatural aging before leaving. (This would be one of the
drawbacks of trolls.) By the time he got back to Dwarftown, he was down to 20
Strength (from 29 before the pools). He threw all 15000 of his gold at Garth for
strength training. It did no good. He went down and saved Khelavaster (for my
first time ever). After nearly getting killed in the animated forest, he remembered
that he was cursed and / or doomed from the pools, so he booked it back up to an
altar on a higher floor, blessed his stomafillia, and started camping out saccing
everything that would step on the altar. Finally he reached very close and felt the
terrible gloom being lifted.
Somewhere along the line he'd picked up a wand of destruction with 4 charges. O_o
He finally managed to learn his first spell, Light, around then. Go Goblin Maybe!
He got himself crowned in Dwarftown by luring monsters down from the big room close
by. He received acid immunity (woohoo!) and the ancient claymore Death's Blade
(woohoo? Never got it before. Turned out to be awesome.). He dove down and found
Skullcrusher just lying around in the CoC graveyard. (Truly the RNG is generous!)
He found the Banshee and took her back up to the Water Temple so she could clear out
the chaos servants for him. He hacked his way through the other enemies with
surprisingly little trouble; even the Snake from Beyond fell to 6 or 7 hits with
Death's Blade. On the way out, he picked up some nice eternium equipment, including
some plate mail which he immediately donned.
Goblin Maybe then realized he had a problem: He had no fireproof blankets and no
ring of ice, and he was running out of things to do that didn't involve the ToEF.
So he started on everything else. He helped Blup with no trouble, thanks to two
rings of the fish. He started building a bridge over troubled water in the ToTHK.
He passed two gorgons on the way up and nearly had a heart attack -- the second one
was neutral and he walked right up to it. Deciding that it was high time to have
some source of teleportation for such moments, he went to the VDDL and dug out the
walls until he found the hidden staircase and the accompanying wand of
teleportation. Feeling safer, he returned to his bridge building. (Huh, I just
figured out that the unlock door command will lock doors too. Get to me now,
gorgons!) He pounded the skeletal king with little difficulty and got the RotHK.
Why is it that in the game where I get crowned with acid immunity, I find 7 giant
slugs, including a corpse?
He still had no way to deal with the ToEF, so he departed for an extended visit to
the ID. He got a pair of 7LB from an undead nest. Yes! Then, after about half an
hour of repetitive bashing, a gnoll nest yielded a "blanket," which he knew was the
kind he needed (already ID'd plain and waterproof). Phew! Back on track.
The ToEF was pretty rough this time, as I feared. He had enough sources of fire
resistance that the air wasn't a problem for him, fortunately. He took a fair bit
of damage in the temple, though, going through 3 blessed PoEH and a prayer (when he
was down to ~30 HP) over the course of the battle. He hacked his way through the
temple, finally cornered the ACW, and killed it surprisingly quickly with Death's
Blade. As he was walking out, his single blessed fireproof blanket went bye-bye.
But he'd planned for that worst-case scenario. His wand of teleportation got him
back to the stairs and out of the tower in a total of 6 turns. You gotta love
teleport with control.
On the way back through the wilderness, his birthday came around. He felt old.
Yes, trolls do indeed have one BIG problem.... *sigh*
A giant centipede on D:26 dropped a PoCC. Thank you, dear RNG!
NOW he finds a ring of ice. Well, I can't complain. Overall the RNG has been very
good to Goblin Maybe.
Found Preserver (for 1M gold), a potion of youth and a potion of longevity (phewww),
and two PoE in the Casino -- by far the best assortment of stuff I've ever seen
there. Things could have gotten hairy thanks to the peaceful red worm wandering
around, but he locked it up with his wand of door creation and keys. The PoEs gave
him Disarm Traps and some more knowledge about First Aid or something. *shrug*
There was a scary moment right below the casino when a master lich summoned a horde
of ghost lords. His wand of teleportation saved him again.
He found a lesser vault of red dragons on D:34, which yielded two level-ups, two
fireproof blankets (very funny), a tower eternium shield, the works of Confucius,
and some other stuff.
He felt a surge of power on the air temple level and saw Bran-Bley the cave tiger
nearby. The artifact turned out to be Whirlwind, woo. Realizing he'd missed the
shortcut to the surface, he backtracked and found it. He picked up two more PoE
(!), which gave him Detect Item Status and Appraising -- not bad.
Concentration and Willpower are a lot more important for learning spells than I
realized. With my learning and willpower boosted way up, I can finally read
spellbooks about 2/3 of the time. Normally, even with Literacy at 100, I could
barely even read Darkness or Light.
A lightning vortex just destroyed Goblin Maybe's 7LB. >_<
After throwing a million gold at Garth for various stats (we'll see what comes of
it), Goblin Maybe dove for the end.
For reference (each * represents a stat or potential increase):
strength (200K): ***
dexterity (630K): ************
perception (100K): ****
Goblin Maybe bashed his way through the air creatures with shocking ease using
Skullcrusher. It took only one or two hits to kill air demons, and three or four to
kill elementals. Yulgash stayed in the temple and summoned a lot of help (both
firsts for me), but nothing dangerous. He fell in five hits.
He ran into a lesser vault of middle undead (spectres, vampires, ghosts) on D:41.
The first spectre dropped yet another PoCC. ^_^ Unfortunately, another ghost hit
left Goblin Maybe feeling old. (I'm never playing trolls again. Ghosts are just
too scary. Maybe there should be a resistance-to-aging intrinsic....) Another
spectre dropped another pair of 7LB. Woohoo! Four corpses, +4 To. Yum! (The first
three had me down to L, but I gained a level and suddenly was back at L+. Huh.)
Goblin Maybe ran into another ghost nest near the earth temple, and he became very
old. He had a sinking feeling that his quest would end in ignominous dust. Then he
thought to put on the ring of invisibility he'd bought in a dungeon shop moments
before, and to his vast relief found that the ghosts couldn't see him. He
laboriously hacked his way through the temple. The Ancient Stone Beast didn't seem
to see invisible; it just wandered around, forcing Goblin Maybe to hack through
grues and elementals to get to it. It took only 7 hits with Death's Blade. (I
think I've underrated fighting classes.)
A nest on UL:1 included a greater moloch. Goblin Maybe quickly established that he
couldn't even scratch it or contain it with doors ("A door is smashed!"), so he made
a tactical advance directly to the stairs. UL:6 had another surge of power (I'd
only gotten one ever until this character), with Dontar the shadow troll
guarding ... the crown of leadership! Nice!
Nuurag-Vaarn was ROUGH in melee. All his spells were nasty and his attacks hit hard
too. He was shockingly durable, too, especially after I'd had such an easy time
with the previous temples. He eventually fell to Death's Blade, after I'd gone
through 4 PoUH and a prayer. Yikes. And that was after I'd stumbled confused
through much of the temple, running into an annihilator on the way, who -- of
course -- immediately grabbed my seven league boots. Grr.
Well, on to the finish for Goblin Maybe. He found another lesser vault of red
dragons on D:47 (I seem to get a lot of these). They dropped a lot of decent stuff,
and (YES!) a ring of djinni summoning. Hello, "pairs of seven league boots." (I
went through way too many of these this game.) He found that D:48 was guarded by
not one but two greater molochs. (Kya!) He avoided them, reversed the staircase,
and descended. For his uselessness gift he got ... *drum roll ... Protector! YES!
What a shield! On to the final fight.
I decided to try the weapon of mass destruction ending this time. With his ring of
invisibility on so the ghost lords wouldn't dust him, Goblin Maybe tunnelled around
and fought his way to the first lever. The balor hit him once before he panicked
under the pounding and fled. ^_^ He pulled the lever and then tried to decide what
to do about the ghost lord who had stepped onto it. Suddenly a water elemental
arrived to finally deliver the rune-covered trident. (Level 37, about 30M exp.)
Goblin Maybe took out the ghost lords from a distance and demolished the lever. He
teleported down to start digging into the other room and was quickly surrounded by
about five balors and Fisty. He quickly left them in the dust with his wand of
digging and seven league boots, but the room was packed with chaos creatures and the
balors were closing from behind. He teleported into the room, hoping to be able to
go straight to the lever. No such luck -- the balor was still on it. But a few
turns later, he unaccountably stepped off. Teleport, pull, zap, and Goblin Maybe
had won. He teleported back to the stairs to regenerate, then decided to go for the
glory. He equipped the rune-covered trident and went balor-hunting. It wasn't
easy, but after one or two of them he hit level 40 and got his bash attack, which
worked quite nicely. After all of Chaos' gatekeepers were dead by his hand, he
left. He took out the greater molochs on the way for fun (and another level-up).
He did the unicorn quest with ease and left to his glorious (short) future life.
