As opposed to my previous posted character, little in this game felt particularly remarkable. I certainly didn't have as many near-death experiences or miraculous escapes this time around. I feel that any of the special endings are quite easily obtainable with a Dwarven Barbarian. Dwarves are probably second only to Trolls as the best class for a Barbarian, due to their potential to begin with excellent Strength and Toughness scores. Before you know it, their hit points really start to take off! Furthermore, their initial Learning scores are not penalised in the same way as Trolls. Initial Learning scores in the mid teens are not unheard of. In addition, I like Dwarves due to the fact that their gods favour gifts of gold, which is the easiest "special offer" to obtain in abundance, and also because they begin with Detect Traps. (As I mentioned in my other entry, I can never be bothered fiddling around with Pick Pocket long enough to learn this skill, not to mention having to change alignment if initially Lawful.) Oh, and in case anyone is wondering if I always call my characters "Gordon", that's right. When I start the game up, I usually get straight into it, and like most other people I lose a lot of characters. It's hard coming up with different names for all of them, so I just use my name. Technically I could rename winning characters on the verge of their victory, but that just wouldn't seem right somehow. Here's a rundown of my adventures : - Standard beginning - obtained Healing from the Village Dungeon, and arrived in the Puppy Cave too late to make the rescue. The huge manual became drenched in a water trap before I became literate - no great loss. An altar was generated on the bottom level of the Village Dungeon. - Met the Old Barbarian and obtained his quest. There wasn't much chance of completing this one, since my first kill was an outlaw, and I was going for convenience during the Filk mission this time around. Last time I had to go down to around L121 of the Infinite Dungeon. - Entered the Caverns of Chaos. There were two descending staircases in adjoining rooms on the other side of a large(about 4-5 squares wide) river. These rooms were patrolled continually by a cave tiger which seemed to take great delight in my inability to attack. I was equipped with an Eternium Scimitar at this point and itched to teach that impudent cat a lesson, but somehow knew that I would end up regretting my actions were I to retaliate. - Picked up the Si and arrived in Dwarftown on D9; no background corruption. I picked up my Literacy Quest(to slay a chaos sister) and the Portal Quest. Venturing further down brought me to a Moloch in the Dwarven Halls, which I managed to dispose of with hit and run tactics. This gruelling battle advanced me two levels, bringing me to L15. I didn't like the look of a room full of mimics and turned back, ready to complete the Graveyard Quest. - Before braving the dark cemetery, I went back to the VD7 altar, now well stocked with cooked lizards and other food supplies. Many creatures were sacrificed and I was pre-crowned with Preserver, which I kept as my standard amulet for the whole game. Side-note: I am VERY pleased that piety loss has been modified to make pre-crowning a viable option again - it's one of my favourite features. - Stopped off at the graveyard on the way back and finished off the Necromancer. Griff was freed by sprinkling holy water upon his grave, taking me to L16. I picked up the Elemental Gauntlets and returned to the Caverns. Having located a chaos sister, I obtained the Potion of Literacy and discovered the secrets of the scrolls that I had been carefully harvesting against the arrival of this day. I eagerly identified all of my items, but to my dismay, there was no ring of djinni summoning, potion of uselessness, scroll of danger, or even wand of monster creation! I normally discover at least one of these items(usually the last) at this point. - I received the Animated Forest quest which was still available, having fortunately chosen the Dwarven Halls staircase on my previous expedition. The arcane Wand of Fireballs was my reward, and I knew that the Pyramid would pose no trouble with this mighty weapon at my disposal. The Ogre Quest was also completed at this point, leaving the test of Arena Combat for when I returned from the lands above. - The Pyramid. There was a very funny moment attached to this part of my adventures. Rehetep had, for some reason best known to himself, invited a FIRE VORTEX as part of his welcoming committee. To cut a scorcher of a story short, let's just say that he ended up regretting that decision! The Ankh and Ancient Mummy Wrapping were obtained and stored away. - Having picked up a wand of cold, a scroll of charging, and a climbing set, it was time to brave the Tomb of the High Kings. The cavernous levels bore little of interest, and it was a reasonably straightforward dive to the Chaos Lake. The Ring was easily obtained and its skeletal guardian taken out with tremendous blows. - Still no scroll of danger - thanks to Preserver I was ready to take on the Rift and the Library. I dropped all of my possessions near the exit stairs in the Tomb, taking nothing but the bare essentials: climbing set, ranged weapons(karmic creatures seem to always turn up in the Library), stomafilla herbs, blessed scroll(s) of identify, potion(s) of extra healing. Without Preserver or intrinsic paralysation, an amulet of free action would be invaluable as well(I frequently discover mimic "shops" in the rift). - The Library was quite easy this time round. I've run into greater molochs and werewolf kings in previous games, but no major difficulties this time. The scroll collection was plundered, but still no scroll of danger!!! However, during my travels in the rift, an amulet of water breathing was discovered. Thus my next destination was planned. Recovering my items from the Tomb, they were relocated to the Barbarian's Glade. - The Water Dragon Cave - by this time I had picked up an Eternium Two-Handed Sword, surely the Barbarian's non-artifact weapon of choice? I carefully scouted the treasure belonging to Blup's mother, hoping for an amulet of life saving, a ring of djinni summoning, a ring of ice, a wand of monster creation, or seven league boots. Already demonstrating the seeds of chaotic behaviour, I conveyed the location of his mother to Blup in order to obtain a reward. His ecstatic reaction was almost enough to make me reconsider the vile act of murder I was about to commit. But ambition was too strong... Descending for the second and last time into the underwater cave, I requested an audience with the greater dragon to inform her of my actions. She in turn had decided to honour this deed with a legendary artifact of the deep; a rune-covered trident which would be dispatched into my keeping at a later date. Once this was done, the water dragon had no further use. A scroll of darkness doused all light from the middle of the treasure chamber. Working myself into a Beserker rage, I lashed out with a tremendous blow, severely wounding her. Venturing out of the dark area, an attempt to pick up a piece of the treasure brought her instantly to my side. Still charging madly, the poor creature was chased into a dead end and hacked to death; simply an obstacle in my way to obtain the items which would eventually bring me to immortality. The evil crone's dark laughter was almost audible... - Cheated! The treasure chamber contained none of the items I was seeking! Cursing fate itself, it was time to seek out Darkforge. The pools therein did little beyond granting and removing teleport control, plus a goodly portion of cursing and dooming for good measure. I constantly trekked back and forth between the Dwarftown altar and these pools, but in the end it was a waste of time. The steel golems themselves posed no threat with the eternium two-handed sword and mighty blows. The weapons room contained the artifact halberd Wyrmlance, one of my new favourite weapons. The armour room had a suit of eternium plate mail. - What to do...my options had practically been exhausted. The Casino Shoppe was my best bet, but to get there I would have to pass Khelavaster. However, in order to do so and still complete a special ending, I'd need an amulet of life saving first. It was a gamble, but better than nothing... - Back to the Dwarven Cemetery. Testing my newfound literacy skill to its fullest, I deciphered all of the graves to locate the ones containing "great treasures". I dug them all up, encountering nothing worse than a Lich King(I hate those Emperor Liches!). And then in the last grave... a steel amulet! A quick identification revealed that this was truly the amulet I had been seeking...my destiny was assured. - The Tower Of Eternal Flame - I went in with three blessed fireproof blankets, some stomafilla herbs, a wand of digging, a pick axe, and a few extra items. All three of those blankets burned away during my time in that tower! Two blessed rings of fire resistance, elemental gauntlets, and the consumption of a fire beetle was enough to protect my body from the ravages of the fiery building. Feasting upon a red dragon corpse inside the Tower allowed me to remove one of these rings. The fire orb was almost absurdly easy to obtain, with the amount of damage I was doing, I could handle everything that was thrown at me. The orb's guardian was hit by a few bolts of cold and then finished off with Beserk/tremendous blows. - Back to the Caverns, completing the Arena and Greater Demon quests on the way down. Khelavaster was saved, and then a trip to the Casino Shoppe was in order. Unfortunately there were no artifacts generated in there, but I did manage to pick up a Girdle of Giant Strength! This certainly came in handy after a nasty encounter with a Ghost Lord which took me to middle aged and decreased my statistics. I had also managed to obtain the necessary scroll of danger and wand of monster creation by this point. I took them up via the Darkforge shortcut to drop off at the Barbarian's Glade. - The battle bunnies and the cat lord - dug through the wall to deal with the former. I wonder if later versions may make that wall undiggable and disallow teleportation? Now -that- would be a challenge and a half! The cat lord rewarded me with his ring, excellent! - Further down - I had completed the water temple with no difficulties beforehand and picked up permanent invisibility via a pool. This, along with a stealth of 100 made obtaining the air orb extraordinarily easy. It was just a matter of going around and picking off the minions. I took very little damage and fried the Master Summoner's corpse to take back to Terinyo. The ensuing potion of cure corruption was added to the growing collection of items in the Barbarian's Glade. - Back into the Caverns - there was a greater vault of red dragons between the Earth temple and D47. I passed these for now, eager to explore as much of the dungeon as I could before receiving the White Unicorn's gift. Corruption wasn't a problem, all of this was occurring during the 70-80 day mark. Here ensued what I will loosely term "Dragon Quest". Wyrmlance bit deep into the ranks of both Blue and Red Dragons, during which I picked up practically everything that I would need. Two potions of uselessness, a couple of scrolls of danger, potions of gain attributes, potions of strength, potions of toughness, potions of speed, holy water, thousands upon thousands of gold, food, a couple of scrolls of chaos resistance, TWO phase daggers, a potion of cure corruption, a ring of djinni summoning, seven league boots, and of course a certain artifact dagger as a quest reward. After the Blue Dragon nests I ventured into the Quickling Tree to bring my speed up to around 210. - Greater Red Dragon/Wyrm vault. Much fighting and retreating to heal ensued here. I couldn't find the way in to the main vault room at first(it was like a huge cavern with a single enclosed room in the middle) and so I relied upon my teleport intrinsic to venture inside. HUGE MISTAKE!!! If I hadn't picked up the Quickling Tree speed increases, it's likely I could have literally been toasted in there. Fortunately I discovered the way out via searching the right hand wall and managed to escape. Artifacts discovered on this level: Executor, The Emerald Dagger. The artifact list shows a few that I didn't notice, perhaps these were here as well. - Interlude - I put on the Crown of Science and the Seven League Boots and patrolled the forest to find a giant boar. By this time, dooming was the only way to get multiple encounters considering my excessive speed. A skull soon fell into my hands. - Assassin's Guild - I was now L50. The Prince didn't particularly seem to mind my hacking his entire empire to pieces in a matter of moments, calmly commenting that I seemed dangerous. He gave me the Filk Quest and then was splattered into a heap with one blow. His dagger was taken as a momento. - Filk was on L10 of the infinite dungeon - fireball took him out. - Scintillating Cave - a quick dive to the bottom. Unfortunately, the Emperor Moloch was as far away as possible from the exit stairs. I didn't have magic mapping and had to estimate the teleportation. Two twin phase dagger attacks eliminated him in record time, and the scroll was taken back to Khelavaster. The Trident of The Red Rooster was summoned, and my victory seemed assured! Bear in mind that I had around 7 blessed chaos resistance scrolls, a spare potion of cure corruption, a ring of djinni summoning, about five "spare" corruptions, 3 of the 5 orbs, and Mastery in pole arms from all that Wyrmlancing! And all of this was BEFORE I'd had all of my corruption removed by the Greater White Unicorn! - The final two orbs - the Earth temple was over in a matter of moments. Nothing could stand between me and the mighty Trident! Beserker/tremendous hits smashed the Chaos Archmage in the Mana Temple. Darkness wasn't even a problem since I'd found an everburning torch in the Dragon nests - these must be amongst the rarest items ever! - By now I was at a point where all I had to do were the Chaos quests and then I could venture through the Gate. By this time I had drunk several potions of education and picked up the skills of Detect Item Status(!!), Concentration(!!), and Gardening(2 out of 3 isn't bad). So I went back to the Library and learned as many spells as I could find. Strength Of Atlas, Teleportation, and Fire Bolt were the most useful. - White Unicorn Grove - I was healed of all corruption. - Switching alignment - I became chaotic by digging up all of the graves in the cemetery and consuming their occupants. (yum) - Chaos Quests - The old crone was supplied with her items - I had to kill several farmers before one of them thoughtfully left a corpse - I fried it with fire bolt and carried it back to the Mountain Village. Keriax was slain with the L50 Trident/Beserk/Tremendous blow combination, his corruption beams only struck me twice. - A fall from grace - Time to get crowned. I made several trips down to the Dwarftown shop to sell excess items to raise gold for sacrificial and training purposes. It was upon returning from one of these trips that I accidentally bumped into a cave lion, slaying it instantly. And that was the end of my cats-eye ring! Extremely annoying. The one satisfying aspect came from splattering that cave tiger who was still hanging around on D1. (Chaotic laughter) - Crowning at last - So then it was back down through the Darkforge shortcut, where a sacrifice of many artifacts and much gold upon a chaotic altar refused to budge me past the "very close" mark. Blessed stomafilla herbs tipped the balance - I guess Abbad-Undar was hungry. Two corruptions infested my being - thorns from the hands and horns from the head - sort of a matched set, I guess. The crowning gift was Vanquisher, which was rather superfluous at this point in the game. - On the way back down - a chaos brother dropped ANOTHER ring of djinni summoning! Unbelievable! - D49 - Throwing the right potion on D49 impressed Abbad-Undar so much that he gave me the Robes of Resistance; these replaced my Eternium Plate Mail. Throwing a second potion didn't seem to impress him as much - maybe he was still reeling from the first demonstration. Anyway, I dug diagonally through the wall and threw sis to make it to the stairs. - D50 - I dropped the Crown and the Medal of Chaos by the stairs and proceeded to wipe out every denizen of this level. The balors posed a moderate difficulty, but only due to corrupting touches. In any case I wasn't particularly worried about that, since I only had around five or six at this point. I alternated between the Trident, the Sting/Needle combination, and two phase daggers. - Last minute preparations - I used one of the rings to wish for potions of gain attributes, but only got one - that's a bit unfair! I should have gone for potions of youth instead. The other wish went on more scrolls of chaos resistance. I blessed what I thought I would need, equipped the Chaos Medal and Crown, and then was introduced to a truly novel experience... - Waiting for corruption! Yes, for once time wasn't my enemy. I just kept pushing ws and WAITING to corrupt about 5-6 more times. If your game has ever been ruined by too much corruption you will probably understand how satisfying it can be to turn the tables like this. - Through the Chaos Gate - I was extremely corrupted and entered the Gate with very much less trepidation than my previous character, to whom all of this was untested. All the same, I think those Chaos tests will always have me on the verge of some degree of heart failure - I keep expecting to be shredded! I arrived safely, dumped the Chaos artifacts, and cleansed myself of some of the corruption. I would have removed all of it but Andor Drakon kept confusing me and I was still a bit paranoid about his abilities. - Last time I had to do a bit of wandering around to find Andor Drakon on the Chaos landscape. This time he was within line of sight instantly, hence the relatively small screenshot below. I boosted my strength, toughness, and speed, put on a second ring of the clear mind, and made my way up to him. As with my previous character, it was simply a case of ignoring his stat drains and just smashing into him with the Trident on Beserk setting. It might have taken around 10-15 rounds. All in all, not as satisfying as my Avatar of Balance victory, largely because so much of that one was new to me. Still an engrossing experience however, and I would strongly recommend this choice of class/race. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Screenshot ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ #. ## ...##.# . .#C...# .# .## #.... . ###.#. # ##.# ##...... ##...# ...#.. # #..C#C#..##.# #..C.@...#.#.... ##.#.###..#..##... #...# ..##.#..### #.## ##..#..##.#.# ..............# ###.....[##..###..# ################ Gordon St:77 Le:32 Wi:35 Dx:27 To:58 Ch:11 Ap: 1 Ma:26 Pe:33 C- DV/PV: 33/58 H: 999(1274) P: 85(358) Exp: 50/79640555 ChAoS Sp: 209 Blessed Invisible Satiated Berserk ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Gordon Race: male Dwarf Class: Barbarian Eye color: brown Hair color: brown Complexion: brown Height: 3'11" Weight: 185 pounds Age: 201 (middle-aged, 138 years of unnatural aging added in) Star sign: Sword Birthday: 1/Sword (day 181 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your father was an accomplished hunter and warrior.
