Story:
[warning: very long, perhaps boring, but contains some interesting
information, especially the second paragraph about the Cat Lord]
This is my first win, I am extremely pleased. After having at least 50
characters die, often in a very stupid fashion (such as my L25 drakling
barbarian who was killed by a mimic hivemind in the ID), I am victorious at
last. Thinking about Ibrahim's stats, and how he beat the game without
much trouble, perhaps I could have gone for an ultra ending, but I didn't
feel like doing anything overly ambitious for my first victory. Many
PoGAs and potions of toughness, nearly all found in the ID, are responsible
for this character's outstanding toughness. Ibrahim became quite the
amateur wizard, starting with reading saved spellbooks at L23, then finding
more in the ID, and, finally, at about L42, visiting the Sinister Library
of Niltrias. My knowledge of magic proved *very* useful, most notably
when fleeing from powerful monsters using Teleportation, during my epic
battle with the Cat Lord, and in clearing out the Bug Cave. (which simply
would have been impossible without ball spells, especially Improved Fireball)
Corruption wasn't a problem, in spite of my very long stay in the Drakalor
Chain. (although much of this time was spent in the wilderness) I found an
AoLS when my character was at about L21 in ID:25-30 or so. The stupid Dwarven
Mystic (maybe he hates neutral Dwarves?) gave me only 2 potions of training
and a PoGA, and no SoCRs. I found one SoCR in the CoC, above the Casino,
wished for 2 with a RoDS, retrieved the one in the HMV, got 5 from the Mad
Minstrel for the weird tome, and obtained 3 from the Bug Cave. I didn't
find any PoCCs, but got 5 from Guth'Alak for greater chaos creature corpses
(Keethrax, Snake, ACW, a black unicorn, and Yulgash), and additionally was
extremely lucky when I got 4 PoCCs in DH:2 by dipping carrot juice into
a potion of exchange at about L43. My other 2 attempts yielded potions of
boost mana and water. As one can see from my inventory list (4 SoCRs were
left over) corruption was not a problem and I was never in danger of having
to accept Yrriur's reward early. I was crowned at L18, recieving fire
immunity and the crappy (considering I specialized in Maces & Flails) staff
of the Wanderer. I postponed the Keethrax quest and all but the first
Thrundarr quest in order to be post-crowned at L23, when I recieved the
Ring of Immunity. It definitely is the best ring in the game, making fights
with dragons, fights with many spellcasters (Lichs up to Lich King, Skeletal
Kings, and of course Nuurag-Vaarn), the Air Temple, and the Blue Dragon Caves
extraordinarily easier, in addition to adding 5 points to both DV and PV.
I had three wishes in this game, all from rings of djinni summoning. The
first gave me a very nice {Str +14} girdle of giant strength, which sadly was
destroyed by an annihilator in the ID. (I didn't notice it, and thus didn't
remove the girdle. It grabbed and destroyed it on the first hit.) The second
wish was used for 2 SoCRs, and the third wish for 4 wands of destruction
before my final descent to D:50. I never had a pair of seven league boots,
and didn't miss them much, since I could just teleport if I needed to run
away. Early in the game I used the guaranteed wand of teleportation from
the VDDL, later I learned Teleportation using the spellbook from Khelavaster,
book casting it until the tome was destroyed, then found another Teleportation
spellbook in the Library.
Ibrahim's fight with the Cat Lord definitely merits its own paragraph.
None of the spoiler sites really said much about him, so I naturally figured
that he was an easy opponent. Perhaps that is true, if you've only killed
7 cats. I however, had killed 29 cave lions, 24 cave tigers, and 14 wild
cats at the time of the encounter. This made the Cat Lord the toughest
single opponent that I faced the whole game. Here are his stats: DV:61,
PV:5, 2140 HP, 3 attacks, hit causes 94-192 points of damage (104 average),
Speed: 186. It is also very important to remember that the Cat Lord seems
to bypass PV. He did 100-200 HP damage consistently per round, and had
far to many HP for me to kill him fast enough in melee. I retreated from the
Cat Lord's no-teleportation level, fearing for my life and gulping down 4
PoEHs and one PoUH. I made it to the level above and teleported away. After
recovering from my shock, I decided to kill the stupid Cat Lord no matter
what it would take. I knew that I couldn't dream of facing him in melee,
so I cast Improved Fireball at him, which I had very luckily found a
spellbook of early in the game. This was the only spell that would work,
since the Cat Lord shrugged off nearly all of my bolt spells, and I needed
to keep my distance from him. Basically, I cast improved fireballs at the
Cat Lord, teleported away, cast some more, and repeated the process. I
cast Improved Fireball about 20-30 times, exhausting myself for most of them
after I ran out of PP. Ibrahim lost one mana point during this long duel,
and possibly another one later. I bashed him to death with my melee attack
at the very end, on D:35, one level above his lair on D:36. It would have
simply been impossible without my knowledge of Improved Fireball. The kill
gave me an incredible 3,085,947 xp, advancing me *four* levels, from L33 to
L37. If you are reading this, and have a good way to deal damage from a
distance consistently, (good missile skills or mindcraft also may work), along
with knowledge of Teleportation (or SLBs?), consider exploiting the Cat Lord
for experience points. I got as many from him as from killing Nuurag-Vaarn.
My general strategy was to be very tough, with a high PV, in order to
avoid being surprised by powerful or paralyzing monsters. It worked quite
well. Mages may have more offensive power, but tougher classes, especially
healers, are a lot more forgiving to play. By L50, experienced greater
molochs and greater titans were the only remotely challenging monsters. My
high PV prevented most monsters from even damaging me. An eternium golem
might have made for a challenging fight, but I never encountered one.
The Water Temple was ridiculously easy. I didn't take a single point
of damage there. The ToEF and the ACW weren't hard. (fire immunity and Frost
Bolt are nice) The only things in the Air Temple that significantly
damaged me were some diamond golems summoned by Yulgash, but even they
weren't too bad. I took some damage in the Earth Temple, so I would go up
the staircase when I became surrounded and fight the creatures there. The
ASB only damaged me once, and I dispatched it quickly with a phase dagger.
The Mana Temple was the only place that worried me, when Nuurag-Vaarn hit
me with a couple death and energy rays, and I drank 2 PoEHs. I shot 6 humanoid
slaying arrows at him, only hitting twice, lured him out of the mana temple
proper (still on the MT level, though) and killed him from two spaces away with
Acid Ball, learned from a spellbook found at the Library. It seems kind of funny
for a healer to kill the Chaos Archmage with magic, doesn't it? The Blue Dragon
Caves weren't too bad wearing a ring of regeneration. (which I later stupidly
turned into a ring of gain attribute {Ap +1} by accidentally dipping into
a potion of exchange) D:50 was quite easy using wands of destruction. The
balors were no problem. I killed two and only was damaged once. They fell
easily to Purifier, my D:49 potion of uselessness throwing gift. (very nice
before D:50 if you specialize in Maces & Flails) I chickened out of trying to
kill Fistanarius, though in retrospect I'm sure I would have succeeded.
Strangely enough, the Cat Lord was the most fearsome opponent in the whole
game. Demon slaying arrows and a wielded phase dagger killed the greater molochs
without too much trouble, although one time I had to teleport away and
heal myself fighting an experienced one. Both greater titans were killed
using giant slaying arrows and a PD on DL:1. I found my first phase dagger on
D:13, which encouraged me to train secondarily in Daggers & Knives. Protector
was found in Sharad-Waador's room, guarded by Pouil, the chaos spider. I
trained in Maces & Flails, got the Basher, Powerful Strike, and Mighty
Strike talents, then wielded Big Punch for most of the game to make up for
healers' traditional lack of offensive power. Advanced to L50 in the Blue
Dragon Caves, before Srraxxarrakex, who wasn't much of an opponent. Equipping
the Earth Orb was useful to raise my toughness for the Dragon Caves. I barely
used Needle and Sting, my melee attack was already powerful enough and I wanted
to avoid being hit by the ghost lords on D:50. No greater vaults were generated
in the CoC. I don't remember ever praying for healing. The games says that
I asked for 1 divine intervention. I'm not sure if that's from crowning or
if I just prayed once for healing and forgot about it. I spent most of the
mid-game in the ID, and a lot of time in the wilderness travelling between
locations. The game took a few weeks to complete, from 11/16/03 to
12/1/03. I put in a little time whenever I could, which accounts for the
large number of times I saved the game. Overall, a lot of good luck made
this by far the most powerful character I've ever had, and made for a
pretty easy first win.
