Having neiter healing nor food preservation skills, this character had quite
a hard time just staying alive, and ultimately failed.
Early on I relied heavily on my trusted cave bear pet to do my fighting. He
was a great help and I even managed to reach the bottom of the puppy cave
in good time and beeng only level 3 at the time. The puppy was killed before
I could locate him thoug. Fighting the raider lord didn't work out as planned
either because my cave bear ignored my orders to move away and charged the
raider lord and killed him. Thus I didn't get payd because I wasn't the one
that killed him. Lacking food preservation I didn't even get any raider corpses
I could collect bounty on. Doing the carpenter quest I took no chances and "parked"
the cave bear behind a closed door on the healers level. It turned out I was
not neraly though enough to survive on my own thoug, and I had to run back to
the healer 4 times before reaching the carpenter level of the dungeon. Somehow
I finaly managed to find the carpenter and manged to lead him to the healer.
Beeng a bard born in book I got plenty of advances per level, especialy after
level 6, so healing was soon trained wery high. The next step was to find the
high mountain village. This also turned out to be a hazardous trip as the lack
of food preservation was taking it's toll on my food reserves. Beeng a dwarf it
didn't help that I only seemed to encounter orcs or kobolds either. Luckily
they did drop some rations and breads, but food was still a wery limited resourse
throughout the trip. By the time I entered the village I was "Starving!" and had
lived on potions and divine favour for the last few levels. All these where
however exhausted, and I'm sure I had starved to death shortly after if I hadn't
been lucky. In desperation I ordered my pet to kill the ratling guards and one of
them thankfully dropped a iron ration. Then I stumbeled into the shop and sold a
tonne of junk I had been carrying with me, picked up another ration and made a run
for the CoC. Once again I had to rely on quaffing potions to remove the worst hunger
one of them turned out to be a potion of balance, and as it also affected my
thoughness it satiated me quite a bit. I managed to get to the arena and bought
about 150 cooked lizards from the vendors there. That was the end of my food problems
for the remaining game. After fighting a few arena matches I set course for dwarftown.
My compultion for taking along everyting I find to make a proffit in the store eventualy
lead to me beeng so strained even another 10 stones made me overburdened, so for the
last few levels down stuff there lying around everywhere. I had just gotten the stairs
down to dwarftown in sight when I found the route blocked my a master swordsman, my
pet imedeately engaged him, but to my shock the cave bear was killed in one round and
the master swordsman was only slightly incured! Bithing my teeth toghether I raised my
sword and charged at him, only to have it beaten out of my hands right away. I wielded
an axe.. poing.. there it goes, a hammer, same thing. I was suddenly completely out of
weapons and I wasn't even denting his armor in unarmed combat, while the master swordsman
was drawing blood in every blow. I ran for it, did some fancy foot work in a crossroad,
and dashed for the stairs (not much of a dash considering the size of my backpack, but
you get the idea). Along the way I picked up all my weapons and dove (well actualy I
fell) down the stairs, with the swordsman in hot persut, I crawled toward the temple and
managed to get the fool onto the altar. A second later he was gone and I was in much better
standing with my god. A few sacrifices later I was in good enough standing to create holy
water from my plain water, and blessed a heap of id scrolls. It turned out I had a potion
og gain attributes (cursed, but I fixed that in a hurry), and not to mention an amulet of
life saving(!!) in my stuff. Having sorted out my stuff and maximised my equipment, I
quickly completed my first quest to slay an orc, and then started on my jurney beyond the
aimated forest, looking forward to putting my amulet of life saving to "good" use. On the
way down I had a run inn with a stone statue, wich burned my bow of accuracy and all my
instruments, a crystal statue a bit further down was also a bit thoug to get rid of, but
I finaly managed to kill that too. Upon entering the forest (didn't feel like risking the
Dwarven halls) I had no problems for the first half of the level. Then the forest started
to "thikken" and I suddenly fond myself surounded on all 8 sides my hostiel trees. Normaly
that is not much of a problem, but this wharacter was not wery good in melee and I was
completely incapable of hurting the trees. Using the last charge of my wand of acid, I
managed to get up to the north wall, and dug myself a tullel with a wand of digging.
Unfortunately I did a little finger slip with my wery last charge, and ended up creating
a dead end instead of the shortcut I had planned. Then using a LOT of missiles and the
ocational critical hit in melee, I slowly fought my way back toward the start of my
tunnel, but my hart sank when every single tree in sight was hostile. I fought on, but
was out of any means of healing and even used my amulet of life saving, but the trees just
kept comming. I had learned "mystic shovel" from a potion of wonder earlier, but it
required mote pp than my current power and hp combined. Still I calculated that because
each hp equals two pp when "overdrawing" your power, I should be eable to survive. I finaly
managed to get some space between me and the next tree and blocked the tunnel using a wand
of door creation. Then I healed up to max and cast the spell. I was in quite bad shape
after the excaustion, but managed to create a second door and rested for a long while.
I did a couple of attempts to reach the stairs, but they all failed and I had to retreat
back to my tunnel and heal for long periods of time. Finaly the last time I opened the door
there where no hostile trees in my imedeate vicinity, so I made a run for it, sadly even at
coward they managed to get in a few critical hits through my armor, and soon I was surounded
again. There was a slim hope that one of the few newtral trees around me schould move and let
me move on, but a punch though armor attack followed by a few regular hits was too much and
I was finaly killed 2-3 steps away from the staurs...
Puh.. that storry got rather logn didn't it, but this character had me sitting on
the edge of my seat most of the time. It's been long since playing ADOM has
been this exciting, I must have been close to dying at least 10 times. I didn't
win (agian) but at least this one was entertaining to play.
