If someone had told me that an assassin would be the first class I'd complete ADOM with I wouldn't have believed them. My first attemps with assassins failed miserably, until one day Lao, the Trollish assassin set out on his journey to the Drakalor Chain. He convinced me that assassins are very powerful - especially with certain daggers. First let's introduce the obligatory spoiler space... [Snipped most of the spoiler space, don't see much need for it in here... J.E.M.] Lao's journey started with the obligatory routine that most of my chars do. Get initial quests (carpenter/druid, kranach and puppy) and go for a quick look in the SMC to get it generated at early xp level. Next he went down to save the carpenter and since he didn't get enough alignment in this way went to hotzenplotz for his healing needs. With that done he went looking for Kranach, but due to a few wilderness encounters he reached level 6 and missed kranach so it was time to get to the high mountain village. After finding a good shield one the way to HMV the initial heavy club was exchanged with a shield and an orchish knife, which was used for a while. HMV shop had nothing interesting, so Lao proceeded via the backdoor to the Caverns Of Chaos. On level 2 of the caves a nice altar was situated, which after a visit to the ratling traders in the arena was used to get a precrowning gift - "Nature's Companion". After thanking the RNG for fire and shock immunity he decided to start using two daggers since he felt that his PV was good enough. Proceeding down the dungeon he arrived at the dwarven town and did all of the dwarven elders quests with no significant problems - only a stubborn ogre lord was a little problematic. A nice find was done during all this - a phase dagger, which became his main weapon. So having done all of the dwarves quests he began looking elsewhere for adventure. He had gotten a message from Rehetep, who wanted a visitor. As said so done. Rehetep was visited and killed in orderly fashion. Examining the inventory after leaving the pyramid revealed a wand of cold so he went to get the ring of the high kings, which was retrieved with no trouble at all. On the way back to CoC he visited Darkforge and switched momentarily to the phase dagger and the nice shield he had found earlier. All the golems fell to the power of the phase dagger. The pools were left untouched. Lao decided it was time to go take a look at the deeper level of the CoC. After not beeing able to save Khel, he did use his dagger which came in very handy. Proceeding down passing the water orb level he reached an unpassable wall of fire - so it was time to get the fire orb. On the way up the water orb was retrieved and a little prayer at dwarftown altar got him crowned with ice immunity and the Cloak Of Oman. This was actually quite nice since he had a ring of teleport control. After delivering the corpse to the druid another inventory check was made, which revealed a ring of djinni summoning :). The wish was used for rings of ice. He was no ready to face the ToEF, with 2 rings of ice, nature's companion, cloak of invis and his trusty phase dagger. The tower was surprisingly easy - after zapping the guardian and getting it to follow him the rest was just a question of phase dagger. The corpse was given to the druid for another PoCC. The dive in the CoC went unproblematic. Highlights were a Greater undead vault on Coc26, which was left alone. The casino shop had a phase dagger, which were left there until enough money was on hand - didn't have much luck on the slot machines. A Greater giant vault on CoC 37 provided Lao with "Ironfist", "Thunderstroke" and a phase dagger. So now doublewielding phase daggers and rapidly gaining points in daggers he really felt confident. An annihaltor got one of his phasedaggers so he went back to the casino and got the one there with the money from the vault. Getting the air and earth orb was unproblematic and on CoC46 another greater vault was generated. After zapping his wand of monster detection and counting 36 black Ls he moved on down. On UL4 he met an ancient karmic wyrm, who asked him to slay his ancient enemy. The challenge was accepted and was surprisingly easy, due to the doublewielded phasedaggers and level 14 in daggers and the nice leather armour he was wearing. The ancient wyrm was not much of a problem. After going berserk the phase daggers did their job - only one potion of extra healing was consumed during the fight. After getting the loot from the caves and the treasure from Sharad he stashed most of the money and some other stuff in a corner and prepared himself for the Mana temple. Detect traps was on 100, making the traps no problem. He had to pray for a pickaxe since the one he had with him broke, while he made his way to the Mana Temple. Upon arriving at the secret door he wore a helmet of mental stability, an amulet of light, the ancient mummy wrapping and armed himself with a potion of confusion. When the archmage arrived he was confused and fell quickly to the phase daggers. So gathering the orb and corpse and his loot from UL4 he proceed upwards and encountered of all things a mimic hivemind, which made him very nervous. He had heard horrible tales of adventurers getting killing by them. Fortunately a hill giant stood between him and the hivemind so he had time to equipp a shield, went on coward and tried to flee. The hiveminds speed was greater, so a solution had to be found quick. Browsing through stuff he found a staff of fireballs which were fired only to get the hivemind to slightly wounded. Since this wasn't going quick enough a wand of acid was tried a found superior. The hivemind went in panic, got another shot from the acid wand, and last shot from another wand of fireballs finished him off. After reaching the surface a quest he had gotten long ago was finally finished. He approached the old barbarian and was now a lot more courageous than before. He proceed to Terinyo to deliver the archmage corpse to the Druid and got the Unicorn Quest as well. The black unicorn was quickly disposed of and it was now time to go down to the elemental altars. He had 2 SoCR and 2 PoCC and 6 corruptions, but most importantly of all and wand of destruction with 3 charges. He wanted to visit the assassin prince as well, but after numerous tries to find the secret entrance he gave up and went down to the elemental altars. After placing the orb in their places and navigating the ice patch, he arrived at CoC50. Here he read his only Scroll Of Familiar Summoning and got a WMoPC, which wasn't of much help. The rest of Coc50 was pretty straigtforward having reached level 15 in daggers. A slight mistake was made on a ghost lord, which got him aged to old. Quickly slipping into a robe of invisibility and shooting down the lord with undead slaying ammo from a distance helped. A few more ghosts very aggy and were shot down from a distance as well. To prevent further aging problems he decided to stay invisible and not touch those ghosts. He cleared the way to the lower lever, handled it and used his wand of destruction and did the same thing to the upper lever. Got stiffened muscles corruption on the way to the upper lever and had 13 corruption, but fortunately it didn't matter. He didn't get any more corruptions. The balors - well they only saw his phase daggers :) The gate was closed and he had finally done it! He went home confident that the world was safe only stopping by the old dwarf, who thanked him for saving the world and the white unicorn, who cleared him of all corruption. He went home a happy Troll.
