My rules for it: No using altars in any way or praying, obviously. It's OK to consciously avoid stepping on chaotic altars, since it's not a religious act to recognize that those weird stone slabs have nasty disintegration traps attached to them. I decided it was OK to get a uselessness gift, since throwing a potion of uselessness is not a religious act. It's not Lars' fault that the fumes from the potion made him hallucinate booming voices for a second. ^_- So these were the problems of the challenge: - No praying to save your life. Not so bad; once you're past the early game, you should have healing potions, spenseweed, and teleportation to save you instead. - No guaranteed way to get natural lucky and Fate smiles or remove cursing and dooming. Scrolls of luck become MUCH more valuable. - No easy way to make holy water. Once you get one bottle (such as the guaranteed one from Thrundarr for taking the portal quest), you can dip normal water bottles 4 at a time. So it's not really a problem, although you waste 1/5 of your water overall. - No easy alignment change on altars. Can be annoying at first, but you can just rub out Hotzy and get an amulet of order. - No detecting item status. Not an issue, since it's not so hard to get blessed scrolls of identify. - No (pre-/post-) crowning gifts. Artifacts are cool, but you just make do without. You tend to find a fair number in the run of play by game's end. - No crowning immunity. *shrug* - No permanent blessing. *shrug* Overall, it was surprisingly easy, more of an annoyance than a challenge. If you prudently leave a bottle of holy water and a blessed scroll of identify in reserve (in Dwarftown, outside the blue dragon caves, etc.), you can avoid most of the inconvenience. I also decided to do a semi-related experiment where I didn't use any alignment-changing amulets. So my ending alignment theoretically reflected my overall moral character. Well, I was up around N in the early game, but I ate a couple of undead corpses and dropped back to C, and never climbed back. I actually wound up more chaotic after the endgame than I was earlier. Go figure. I did every single lawful quest I know of, but apparently I was still a bad guy because of my eating habits. OK, now rather boring story: Early game went easily and unremarkably. Saved Kenny, got Healing, headed for the CoC. Did the first couple dwarven quests without incident, but had to retreat from the Arena (thank you, guaranteed wand of teleportation) when Li-Hon-Kay showed up. I was still only level 11. I went to Darkforge to kill steel golems until level 13 (just manageable with mighty blows, if you take them on one at a time), and I also found an eternium two-handed sword in the weapon room, which really got Lars moving. I flattened the pyramid and the dwarven graveyard in rapid succession, mopped up Hotzenplotz, and headed back for the water temple. I beat it without much difficulty, although the Snake from Beyond pounded me a few times before rolling over. On the next floor, I got a surge of power (Yes!), which was Brankar the fire lizard standing on gauntlets that turned out to be Ironfist (YES!). I found an ordinary ring just past that, which was indeed a ring of djinni summoning. I used it for Gardening, which turned out to be a horrible choice. (I thought I'd heard that blessing plant seeds turned them into herb seeds, which is not true. I'd thought Survival + holy water + Gardening would give me all the herbs I could want.) A master swordsman on the next floor dropped an eternium girdle. I found two miscellaneous shops a bit later, which had some ho-hum stuff but also a ring of invisibility. (Hello, Backstabbing bonus!) They also had master mimics that nearly gave me heart attacks. I turned back at the wall of flames and cleared out the lesser golem vault (flesh, clay, stone, and iron rather than stone, iron, and eternium) on the way back up. At Dwarftown I could finally multiply my holy water, bless some stuff, and identify my luggage. I collected the ring of the high kings without incident and cleared the fire temple while invisible. The ACW fell in two normal hits. (Didn't risk mighty or tremendous blows, for fear of getting hit with several energy blasts in a row.) I descended through the rift and cleared out the library for experience. I also found that the ghost librarian blesses you if you give him a book (not permanently, but for quite a while). (Bye bye manual of bridge building!) Two molochs were the hardest opposition, and I beat them easily by the hit-and-step-back method. There were a couple of diamond golems that beat me up pretty good, but tremendous blows took care of them. I picked up an amulet of water breathing along the way, so I went to find Blup's mom, invisible the whole way for fear of giant dragon turtles. I returned to the CoC for the final dive. The Casino had two pairs of 7LB, The Far Slayer, lots of slaying ammo, some rings of slaying and regeneration, and some other goodies. I dispatched the cat lord with humanoid slayers (sigh). I found a lesser vault of blue dragons on D:38, which yielded two PoGA, a PoCC, and some miscellaneous stuff. I cleared the air temple easily, at least after Yulgash teleported out from behind his summoned horde. D:41 had a lesser vault of red dragons, which gave me another pair of 7LB (which was good, because mine got fried during the battle), a PoGA, the black tome of @#%#?!, and a nice assortment of potions and stuff, as well as enough experience for 3 or 4 levels. Pretty disappointing, overall, but I felt better when a lightning vortex dropped a SoCR moments later. I meleed my way through the earth temple easily, killing almost everything with a single mighty or tremendous blow. The Mana Temple was tricky, as usual, but NV fell to humanoid slayers, after draining about 4 points of strength and toughness. Grrr. I decided to tackle the blue dragon caves before the endgame, since I was still only at level 35. I got a surge of power on DL:2, which turned out to be Ezioc the ogre king standing on (drum roll) Wyrmlance. ^_^ A blue dragon dropped a RoDS seconds later, even better, which I used for Find Weakness. An ancient dragon on DL:3 dropped Whirlwind. Partway through DL:4 things just kept getting better, as the water elemental finally arrived with the rune-covered trident. Just in time, too, as an emperor lich was waiting near the stairs to DL:5. He fell surprisingly easily. Moments later I found my first cloak of invisibility -- very nice, because that freed up a ring slot for more slaying or regeneration. Barney knocked me down about 250 HP, but fell after about 10 hits with Wyrmlance (again, no mighty blows, for safety). The other dragons dropped some great stuff, including a PoCC, a PoGA, another RoDS, and about a dozen ancient blue dragon corpses. I did the orbs and descended for the endgame. After much thought, I decided that throwing a potion of uselessness wasn't even a remotely religious act, so I did. I shook off the hallucinations of booming voices ^_^ and picked up the jet-black glaive (sigh) that the potion had somehow turned into. I stayed invisible throughout D:50, after being surrounded by ghost lords a few times and nearly having a heart attack. I actually wound up using that last RoDS for cloaks of invisibility (the most useful thing at the time, as that left both rings free for slaying and regeneration). Fisty and the other balors fell to the rune-covered trident and slayers. I cleared out the rest of the level with assorted slayers and my trusty eternium two-hander. I finally hit level 50 as the last room of chaos mutants was going down. I returned to the surface and planned to help the unicorn as my last good deed, but I was still chaotic and it was hostile. A scroll of balance told me I was about 3000 stones chaotic, which was actually about 300 worse than before I'd destroyed the armies of Chaos. Bizarre. Anyhow, I scummed the ancient blue dragons for a while, wrote 3 or 4 SoCR myself, and left. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Lars Race: male Troll Class: Barbarian Eye color: black Hair color: brown Complexion: ruddy Height: 9'1" Weight: 537 pounds Scars: 4 Age: 19 (grown-up) Star sign: Dragon Birthday: 23/Dragon (day 173 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your father was an accomplished hunter and warrior.
