This was by far my best Orcish Assassin yet.  He made it through the
Bug Temple and the water dragon's lair, which have killed many of my
previous characters, and he survived hordes of nasty monsters, an
incredibly tough cat lord, and the multi-headed chaos dragon.  But
sadly the horde of ghost kings in the Earth Temple was just too much
for him - one critical hit and he was dead from old age.

The game started off fairly well.  A neutral altar on VD:5 enabled me
to learn the Healing skill without having to kill Jharod.  I
accidentally got cursed by hitting a karmic lizard in the PC, and I
was going to scum vast quantities of stomafillia to fix this, but
luckily another karmic lizard left a corpse.

Thrundarr asked me to kill a hill giant chieftain.  This was a rather
annoying quest necessitating lots of ID scumming, but when I emerged,
I had an RoDS and blessed seven league boots, as well as a mace of
destruction that had shown up in the ancient dwarven graveyard.

I almost died in DH:2 when I encountered a horde of chaos mutants who
constantly punched through my armour and corrupted me.  I needed most
of my blessed healing potions to survive that combat, and I picked up
two corruptions on that single level.

I completed Thrundarr's quests and saved Khelavaster, then headed on
down to the wall of flames.  I had lots of trouble with
strength-draining monsters on the way there: first it was a horde of
living walls, then another horde, this time of vampires.  I kept going
back up to Dwarftown to have my Strength retrained, but the fee to get
it above 21 is too exorbitant for me (in fact, I'm not even sure what
it is in 1.1.1).  I had a few potions of gain attributes, but I didn't
want to drink them yet, because my Dexterity wasn't fully trained.  (I
had the thorns and hooves corruptions.)  My SLB were also destroyed,
and were not replaced until I found a new pair in the great water
dragon's treasure hoard.

Went back up and explored the Gremlin Cave and Darkforge - the pools
there gave me intrinsic free action, but also took away my fire
resistance and unnaturally aged me (fixed through alchemy).  By this
time I had trained up my Dex, so I drank my PoGA, which got my
Strength to a more reasonable level.

After clearing out TotHK and the water dragon's lair, I still had
neither a ring of ice nor fire resistance.  However, I attempted the
ToEF anyway, figuring that going down the Rift was pointless without
the Concentration skill, and I didn't want to venture into the Bug
Temple without magic.  Luckily I had a ring of regeneration, which
kept me alive until I finally acquired fire resistance.

I had killed my first cat in the SMC, before I had any alternative
means of handling them, and thereafter simply killed them like any
other monster.  As a result of this, the cat lord was awful,
especially once he decided to fight to the death in a blind rage, and
I went through most of my healing potions dealing with him.
Fortunately he appeared to be vulnerable to humanoid slaying ammo (or
was that just luck combined with the Assassin's increased critical hit
ability?)  I gained several levels killing him - enough to get me
above level 30.  Therefore I went back up, did the black unicorn's
quest, fed the ratling and gave Gaab-Baay her stuff.  I had to kill
_five_ farmers before one left a corpse.

Eventually I found another RoDS and wished for the Concentration
skill.  Once I had trained it up, I had a spellbook-reading session,
then did the Rift.  Sadly the Ghost Librarian had mysteriously
disappeared when I came to leave the library; I suspect that he had
been killed by the ancient black dragon which was hanging around near
the entrance.  I cleared out the Bug Temple by zapping them with bolt
spells - I think having the bracers of war was a big help here.  Soon
afterwards, I went to kill the multi-headed chaos dragon.  That was
tough, as I didn't have much dragon slaying ammo.

I was beginning to feel confident that this would be The One (if
corruption didn't get me) but alas, it was not to be.  When I entered
the Earth Temple, I saw ghost kings coming at me through the walls.
Remembering the wisdom of rec.games.roguelike.adom, I slipped on my
cloak of invisibility, and began taking out one ghost king at a time.
Even so, one ghost king critically hit me, aging me by 36 years in a
single attack, and when I looked at my background screen I saw that I
was dead.  I had no potions of youth, and it was too late to produce
them through alchemy or wishing.  (If it turns out that you can wish
for youth directly, or pray to have your unnatural aging removed, I'll
feel even more annoyed about this death than I do already.)
