Matt started out as an average priest, nothing much outstanding about him.
I always thought priests were one of the easiest classes in ADOM, and my
best non-winner was a priest.  However, I had never won the game as a
priest, and I was determined to win this time as one of them.

The first thing I did was train my Detect Item Status skill up to 100, so
that I could try on every piece of equipment that I found.  This was
invaluable.  I ended up with the best of the best equipment often during
my quest.  Much of this equipment was destroyed by fire, acid, and
lightning along the way, but I didn't have too much trouble finding
replacements.

I started out as a human so that I would have Food Preservation, a
critical part of my general ADOM strategy.  Also, I wanted to be Neutral,
so that I could join the Thieves' Guild, a less critical, but still
important, part of my ADOM strategy.

My first kill was a...  well, I'm not sure.  I forgot to write it down.
Nonetheless, I still managed to get Courage relatively early on in the
game.  I decided to worry about the Assassin Prince's quest later.

I spent a while exploring each of the local dungeons, finding nothing
of great interest in any of them.  Ready to face the unknown dangers
of the Caverns of Chaos, Matt the priest headed off west.  Now he was
around level 10, was still using the same crummy weapon with which he
had started, and knew no good offensive spells.

After a dive in the Caverns of Chaos, he eventually came upon an altar,
sacrificed many enemies, and became extremely close to his god.  Desiring
a pre-crowning gift, he left the altar to go perform some chaotic acts,
knowing that it would be easy to once again return to N= alignment later
on.  Upon returning from his foray into the dark side, he prayed and
received the Ring of Immunity.  Blah.  Somewhat disappointed, he decided
to try to get another pre-crowning gift.  After what seemed like an
eternity of sacrificing, he once again reached extremely close.  This
time he got Preserver, a moderately useful amulet.  I cursed my luck,
knowing there was a guaranteed artifact amulet already in the game.
Oh well.  He pressed deeper into the CoC, where he came upon the Dwarven
City and performed a variety of good deeds.  Satisfied that his alignment
was close enough to N= that the altar should pull his alignment back there
by itself, he returned to the upper levels and again sacrificed many
enemies.  As a crowning gift, he received Purifier, a monsterous mace.
Finally, he had a decent weapon, though he had to wait until level 11
to get it.

After reaching level 12 or 13, he finally had his Pick Pockets skill up
to a decent level and had picked the pockets of a dozen monsters.  He
made the long trip back to the Thieves' Guild and bought skill in Detect
Traps.  Back to the Caves of Chaos.  After gaining another two levels,
wherein he trained up his Detect Traps skill to around 25, he decided
he was appropriately well-equipped to handle the Ancient Pyramid.  By
this time he had found a spellbook of Dispel Undead, so the mummies
were no challenge to him.  Onward he climbed, until he faced Rehetep
himself.  Rehetep and his cohorts fell easily to Dispel Undead.  He
claimed the Ancient Mummy Wrapping and the Ankh.

Unsure of what to do next, he decided to dive into the CoC once again
and finish the Dwarven Elder's quests.  First, he won the championship
in the Arena.  Then, he cleared the Dwarven Graveyard and kicked some
necromancer ass, immune to Nonnak's frost bolts through both his Ring of
Immunity and Ancient Mummy Wrapping.  Talk about overkill.  After finding
a spellbook of Frost Bolt, he headed off to the Tomb of the High Kings
and retrieved the RotHK.  On his trip back from the Tomb, he stopped in
Darkforge to drop off his flammable equipment and entered the ToEF.
Thanks to a Ring of Ice, flameproof blanket, and the Ring of Immunity,
the ToEF was a breeze.  He had built up his effectivity with Frost Bolt
while in the Tomb, so he was quite deadly against fire-based monsters.
After getting the Fire Orb, he equipped it in his utility slot, where it
stayed until the end of the game.

Now in his mid-20s, Matt was starting to become cocky, so he decided to
clean out Darkforge.  By this time, he had learned Lightning Bolt, which
he trained up in effectivity fighting a horde of Steel Golems.  He rose in
levels quite quickly.  Upon defeating the guardians, he raided the treasure
stores, gaining another decent weapon, a large eternium hammer.  He also
picked up the Crown of Science, though he did not use it during his
adventures, fearing the doomed intrinsic that it gave.

Back to Terinyo in a final trek, he dropped off most of his equipment and
donned a helm of water breathing that he had picked up somewhere.  Finding
Blup's mommy was easy.  He returned to Terinyo, located the sad water
dragon baby, and eagerly told him about the water cave.  Sensing that his
work was done in Terinyo, Matt once again crossed the river and travelled
due west.

Now set with all the prerequisites for the final dive into the CoC, Matt
wisely prepared himself with lots of medicinal herbs and food, gathered
his store of sis, and bid farewell to the dwarves, first stopping by to
meet with the dwarven mystic and receive several scrolls of Chaos
Resistance.

On his way down, Matt met with few monsters that stood up to repeated
blows from Purifier or his large eternium hammer, and those few that did
fell to Frost Bolts or Lightning Bolts.

After clearing several vaults and greater vaults, he acquired more and
better equipment still, including Protector and Skullcrusher.

Deep in the CoC, he passed by yet another greater vault, this one filled
with Greater Undead.  Even though he was a very high level priest, he
did not wish to tempt fate and risk massive stat loss from Emperor Liches.

Taking a detour to the Mana Temple, he first completed the Ancient Chaos
Wyrm quest, then defeated the Chaos Archmage in a magical duel to the
death.  Of course, having Skullcrusher and humanoid slaying arrows helped.

Back in the main CoC dungeon, he reluctantly gave up the Fire Orb and its
friends, forcing him to rebalance his load.  Throwing most of his sis away
on the icy level helped remove some of his burden.  Tossing a potion of
uselessness scored him another artifact, the Emerald Dagger.  Down on
CoC 50, he switched from Skullcrusher plus Protector to the artifact
trident, Blup's reward for finding his mommy.  So equipped, he scored
massive criticals against all the undead and demons inhabiting CoC 50.
Thanks to the occaisional Lightning Bolt and Dispel Undead, most of the
other monsters fell quite easily.  A quick zap from a wand of monster
detection said the level was completely clean.  Matt checked to make sure
both levers were down, and then began his ascent.  He teleported from one
stairs to the next via Ethereal Bridge, making it a brief journey indeed.

Having won the game, he decided he had had enough adventuring and didn't
feel like trying to complete the Assassin Prince's quest -- especially
since he wasn't sure what his first kill was.  Was it a goblin?  Maybe
it was a bat...

Anyways, Matt the human priest turned out to be among the most powerful
of my characters, despite his humble beginnings, rather sparse use of
magic, and lack of any decent weapon until crowning.  Sometimes the
game just works out well for you.

And I have no idea why his score is 47 million points.  He didn't do
anything special but collect many artifacts.  Maybe it has something
to do with how mediocre his starting stats were.
