NOTE: this file may contain comments or information that is considered SPOILERS, if you do not wish to learn this information pleace leave now. I still can't believe I just won! *Damn* it feels good. I've been playing ADOM maybe ...9 or 10 years now (although the first years savescumming, so I guess they don't count) and now, *finally* I have finished the Quest. Anyway, to this particular hero. I heard people recommend orcish barbarians, because of the brutal strength combined with Find Weakness make them quite deadly. Also they get pretty nice starting equipment (I've seen a couple of [+1, +5] orcish helmets for example), which makes the beginning of the game quite easy. So came to being Morgul, the orcish barbarian, born under the sign of the Dragon, after perhaps 3 or 4 fallen comrades of the same race and profession. His stats were not that spectacular, but good strength and good toughness is all a barbarian needs for the start. Well, as expected the early game was quite easy, so I won't bore you with the details. First kill was in the ID or SMC (can't remember), I think it was a kobold. I wasn't planning for an ulta ending anyway. I did the Yrrigs quest for Healing (I found a neutral altar in the UD and converted to neutrality) and the puppy quest just to check the dungeons for something nice. I found an adamantium spear of might somewhere, along with some other decent equipment, and so I was getting deadlier every day. I joined the thieves guild and got Detect Traps. Finally I was ready to take on the CoC, so I traveled to the west side of the map. I did Thundarr's first quests with ease (the slaying quest was something like a goblin, so no trouble there). I was extra careful going through the dwarven halls this time -- my last promising orc barbarian was utterly slain by a greater titan that happened to walk past. A guy the size of a mountain with a crossbow full of eternium quarrels is just something you don't want to face in the open without a wand of teleportation and a truckload of HP. I did found out one of the weak points of playing an orc -- good old Waldo's racist prejudices make the shop in Dwarftown pretty much useless. I mean, after destroying the threatening ogre town, purifying the grave of their hero and slaying the evil demon attacking their town, all I get are prices like it's the frigging Casino Gift Shoppe and all my wares get sold for almost nothing. "I'd offer 1300 gold pieces for your eternium plate mail", yeah right. Soon I just started to sacrifice everything The One That Kills was ready to take and throw out the rest. Just to get back at the dwarves I briefly left my neutral ways going straight to plain evil and let the demon kill the smith. Except that acts like this don't count in ADOM :> This was probably a bit unnecessary as I didn't seriously get to smithing in any point of the game. Smithing just give me a few points of DV in the end. I stayed pretty much just with polearms all the time, so I was quickly gaining weapon skills and thus DV. With Dodge quickly at 100, a nice big crystal shield and excellent marks at Shields and Polearms, my DV was quickly large enough to keep most monsters from hitting me -- even at tactics at Aggressive. This and Bow skills and some undead slaying arrows made the pyramid and the dwarven graveyard a walk in the park. This time I also remembered to bring a pick axe for the nice sword which I gave to my sword-loving god. I also pillaged the Darkforge. The steel golems stop being so dangerous when you have mighty blow, a good weapon, good DV and some fire resistance. I also went to get the RoHK at this point, except that I had to stay a while in the cavernous levels killing everything because by the time I got to the edge of the red pond I realised I don't have a wand of cold ...bummer. Now I hit a wall for a while. I wanted to save Khelly just for the SoCRs because I was going to get close and personal with some ugly corrupting beings, but I didn't have AoLS or RoDS. I didn't want to go to ToEF just yet, as I had no rings of ice, and no fireproof blankets! Even Thundarr just gave me some random crap like a mithril chain mail, which I probably could sell to Waldo for ...10 gp? I had a pair of SLB though, so the RNG wasn't really wanting me dead that bad. I tried hanging out in the Big Room for a while, but I got nothing. Except I accidentally killed an innocent lion bent on ripping me open and eating my guts. I mean sorry Cat Lord, but when you are hacking your way through an endless sea of spiders, accidents do happen, spears do err and kitties die. Now I knew I had to face the guy who killed one of my previous orc barbs. I was running out of options so I decided to go to the ID and find myself that AoLS and some fireproof blankets. I knew I was buff enough to take on some nastier monsters, so I dived to ID30 and started going back and forth between ID29 and ID30. I was quickly gaining exp as I found some dragons -- even and ancient one -- a shadow wyrm, plenty of giant royalty and such. As I had carefully collected a good pile of slaying ammo, I had no trouble. But no AoLS, and no fireproof blankets, and no rings of ice. I was cursing the RNG at this point, as usually I have maybe three blessed fireproof blankets and two rings of ice for ToEF. I started doing some pickpocketing in hope of having some increased chance of finding a AoLS or RoDS. I hadn't pickpocketed long when I found something quite curious in the pockets of some poor ogre. Shining silver bracers. My jaw dropped to my desk. This was what the RNG was holding for. The great, magical Bracers of War that turn even the lowliest hurthling joker to an indestructible machine of death. It was my first time getting these, and it is probably needless to say that things were a lot easier from this point on. On my way back I went and found Blup's mommy, for some nice balor-slaying trident to be there for me when I need it. In the end I emerged from ID with level getting near the 30s, an AoLS, a couple of fireproof blankets, a couple eternium plate mails, maybe 4 PoGa and the shining bracers which will become the sign of my coming victory. Still no rings of ice though. I ended never seeing one in the entire game, even though I found 2 ring shops and actually bought all the low price rings in hope of generating one. I did have an embarassing close call back at dwarftown though. My pickpocketing ways had put me to NC, so after leaving ID I thought I'd go and quickly slay the crime lord to get some positive alignment. Ok, so some Lord of Order had decided attacking non-hostile mafiosos is bad or something so I dropped to C. I got back to NC after seeing the sheriff though. Now when I got to dwarftown I thought it is probably best to sac something and go to N= again. "The altar glows in black light!" Crapcrapcrap...! It seems that going to C changes your god as well. Needless to say the priest was not happy. Luckily he did not summon anything bad, just a couple rats, and I quickly lured him off the level and locked him up to some room. What I really didn't need at this point was a town full of dead dwarves and my alignment at C--- or something. I sacced all the high metal melee weapons and money I found in my trip to ID and I guess the One that Kills quickly forgetted my quick trip to C as I was suddenly a champion. I got fire immunity and some (useless) ancient claymore -- what's up with that? It's like a crappy eternium two-handed sword with added Death Ray resistance. Big deal. At least my god didn't give me the gauntlets of eternal peace... So anyway, with intrinsic fire immunity I was ready to take on the ToEF probably even naked with just my weapon (an eternium spear I had found, which was my weapon for nearly to the end) and the BoW. As I had high-metal armour and my rings of slaying save underneath my elemental gauntlets, who needs rings of ice? I saved Khelly first and attacked the water temple next, which was no problem for me with DV nearly 100 and enough brutal melee damage to take down water demons and water elementals with a couple of mighty blows. I had one close call after I explored the levels below water temple before going to ToEF. A tension room of mimics. I was feeling quite invincible at the time, so I just attacked them head on. Soon I was standing paralyzed in the doorway and gnawing my fingernails as a mimic hivemind slowly pounded through my armor. Luckily I had around 500 HP and my excellent DV at the time, and the mimic managed to just get me down to maybe 1/3 even though I was paralyzed for a *really* long time, or so it seemed. I quickly teleported away, healed for a while, wore my AoFA and slaughtered the rest of them. Then I continued my quest as a little wiser orc. With my gear ToEF was not that bad. I lured old ACW off the level just in case I needed to teleport, hit him with a couple dragon slaying quarrels and finished him off with a mighty blow. Now with the orb of fire my St was almost 50, and I was ready to go deeper. I found nothing spectacular on my way down. Casino had nothing good on sale, just the jet-black glaive, and I didn't feel like gambling. I did find my old nemesis the Cat Lord, and this time I did not take chances. Last time I had a quite buff orc barbarian going from 400HP to 0 in a single turn as old kitty master decided to fight to death in a blind rage. And he had killed a single cat, and that was also and accident. This time I kept my distance to the sucker, readied a corridor of death full of webs upstairs, lured him up, teleported behind the webs, and started sniping him with some trusty slaying ammo. Hasta la vista baby. I was sure to kill every cat I could find from this on just to further avenge the death of my former champion. The Air temple was a breeze. Old Yully just summoned some kobolds or something to keep my spear from getting bored. His summons did not survive a full turn near my presence, so I just quickly cleared a route to him and banged a quarrel of humanoid slaying to his smug face. That fight was over in seconds. The earth temple was a bit nastier with all the elementals and grues surrounding me, but with tactical retreating and luring them upstairs in little groups it was soon over. The poor stone beast did get some hits through, but quickly fell to my tremendous blows. I found a couple of shops in the way, but they were mostly useless. I found some lesser vaults with something to kill, and tension rooms full of chaos warriors and another one with chaos dwarves. Oh! All that eternium and pickaxes! Anyway, now I was at the elemental anomalies, with Clvl 31, and a strong feeling in my chest that now I have a winner in my hands. I had not found any greater vaults though (I never have, but on the other hand I haven't had many characters this deep). Before going even deeper I chose to stack on my SoCRs by visiting the library and the buggy temple. The library was a breeze at this point, and even though I must have made quite a bit of noise destroying all those frost giant jarls and their buddies, I was told I was a cautious customer and got the weird tome. After delivering the tome I went to the buggy temple. The killer bugs were still quite dangerous in melee, but with plenty of HP, fast regeneration and tactical door creation, I prevailed. I got the black tome as a random drop, but I left it there because I know of it's evil essence. Next I decided to slay some blue dragons to gain some levels, because 31 was really not something I was confident with. I had a crown of lightning with some smithing on it, so I was not afraid of their lightning bolts. I was slightly nervous about some other monsters I might find, however. The first couple levels were a breeze, and I quickly found that the blue dragons were really not a match for me. Even ancient ones fell in a couple critical blows. I found a Lich King, which was quite scary, but he quickly fell to some undead slaying ammo. Even better, I found a tensiom room of titans, which I carefully killed on by one by retreating to regenerate once in a while, and my exp just soared. A level below I found a Emperor Lich, which really was scary. First I tried my slaying ammo on him, but I quickly realised that he was not going to give his life (pun intended) that easily. In the end I thought that it is not worth the risk taking him on, so I just went on deeper. I found the old blue worm in the bottom. I heard that you need ways to inflict a lot of damage in a short time to get him, but that was just what I had. A few critical blows and he was down. I found and killed a total of 6 blue wyrms down there. I also found Soaker and something that eventually appeared to be the Ring of Immunity. Not that I really needed it, with quad-elemental immunity at my disposal already now that the rune trident had arrived. Finally I awoke from by frenzy and realized I should probably continue my quest. The mana temple ended up being easier than I thought. I had good gear to protect me from confusion and death ray, so I just penetrated the temple, and kept killing the denizends one by one until the old dog Nuurag-Vaarn showed up. I lured him to the corridor and kept pounding him with slaying ammo until he was dead. I had 1000 HP by the time so I didn't even need healing. I was Clvl 42 now, and ready to face the final challenge. I unlocked the anomalies, skated through the ice with my endless supply of sis that had multiplied in my backpack. I got Skullcrusher for uselesness, which was unfortunately quite useless at this point. Now, finally at D50. This close to total victory I was not going to take unnecessary risks, so I chose to tunnel into the side rooms and not just face everyone in melee. Another close moment here. At the height of my glory I nearly forgot I was an orc, and you know what happens to orcs around ghosts. I was "old" in two strikes, panicked, teleported back and realised it was time to change tactics. Thank the One that Kills that I had drunk a couple of potions of longevity before! I just hoped I had a few potions of youth around. Very carefully I lured the ghost lords to my sight and sniped them with what was left of my undead slaying ammo. The other beings were not a match for me, as I had the demon-slaying trident with me, and I was not concerned about the corruption as I had about 8 SoCRs to spare. I closed the levers and kept them shut with the door creation + create monster trick. I know, destroying the levers would have been a lot cooler but I had no wands of destruction. Then I left, and just ran in a daze of bliss up to the surface, just staying to chat to Thundarr and gathering my gear on my way up. I had enough SoCRs to clear all the corruption so I didn't bother doing the unicorn quest. I just quickly left before the RNG drops a shadow wyrm aging machine or a uberjackal deathsquad on me. And then I became a king and all that, which was quite nice. Anyway, this was it. It was not a spectacular ultimate ending, but it was my first. I was also proud I did not abuse the game too much, as I didn't kick-empty shops or do some wish engine trickery. In the end I didn't get a single wish in the entire game. I just hoped I could have gotten rid of the aging before I left.
