This was the first time I'd played a troll seriously since I decided
as a newbie that my Trollish Healers were now getting too far to
survive on strength alone, and switched to magic-users instead.  They
do encounter problems other races don't have, even though being a Monk
meant that food was slightly less of a problem and that I started with

My alignment was stuck at chaotic for a long time at the beginning of
the game.  Killing the raider lord and the black druid and bringing
back the dead puppy did not help, and the only altars I found were
chaotic.  I didn't manage to convert until I eventually reached level
10 and was able to get an amulet of order from the sheriff.

Knowing which skills to train was something of a tricky decision,
because not only did I have lots of useful skills, but as a rather
stupid troll I wasn't levelling up very often, and was only getting
three skill increases when I did.  I mostly concentrated on skills
that could help me survive (Food Preservation, Healing, Herbalism, and
assorted combat-related skills like Find Weakness).  Concentration and
Literacy got a bit of training but mostly trained themselves, and
Climbing was trained in haste when it was time to do the Rift.  Having
Food Preservation maxed out was very nice in the dwarven graveyard,
where I ate tons of undead corpses.

After finishing Thrundarr's quests I searched _everywhere_ for an
amulet of life saving but couldn't find one.  I explored the Gremlin
Cave, Darkforge and the Tomb of the High Kings with no difficulty.
Then I went into the Tower of Eternal Flames.  This was much harder,
and somehow I managed to use up my entire supply of spenseweeds in
there.  It must have been a result of engaging the inhabitants in
melee combat, since I was wearing a ring of elemental mastery the
whole time.

I left the Tower, had a long session in the Big Room replenishing my
supply of spenseweeds, then went to the water dragon's lair.  I killed
her using the scroll of darkness + berserk rage strategy, but got
nothing good out of it, except for a couple of experience levels,
which enabled me to max out Climbing and go down the Rift.  In there I
studied loads of spellbooks, some of which were too hard for me and
had nasty effects like draining my Toughness.  

On the way out I talked to the Ghost Librarian and he gave me the
weird tome!  This was really nice, especially as I had still not found
an amulet of life saving and was forced to let Khelavaster die.  It
was the first time I had obtained the weird tome, and I don't know for
sure what I did differently.  I certainly did not eat any harpy
corpses, and nor did I lure the librarian out.  It might have been
because I cleared out the bottom corridor and then spent some time
just studying the pile of spellbooks I'd accumulated, not fighting,
spellcasting or doing anything else noisy.

I went on down the Caverns of Chaos, eating lots more undead in the
graveyard and regaining all the Toughness I'd lost from difficult
spellbooks.  I found a couple more pools along the way, and drank from
them (hoping for intrinsic free action) until I was unnaturally aged
to 44 years, which is old for a troll.  A potion of youth took me back
to "middle-aged", but since I only had one potion, I decided to stop
drinking from pools until my unnatural ageing was dealt with.  On D:28
I found a ring of invisibility, and was finally able to clear out the
Bug Temple.

In the blue dragon caves, I found a wand of wishing (1 charge) - this
was the only source of wishes in the entire game.  The first wish went
on potions of youth, and after two blessed potions I was young (13)
again.  I also found my first scroll of danger, so following my
philosophy of "get as close to ascension as this character can" I fed
the ratling and gave Gaab-Baay her stuff, then converted back to
neutral and got crowned (with Shezestriakis, unfortunately).

When I had been everywhere in the Caverns of Chaos and retrieved the
Mana Orb, I was still only level 27.  I thought I would need the white
unicorn's help, so I decided that rather than wishing for wands of
destruction, I would kill everything on D:50 and save my last wish for
spellbooks of Death Ray (for Sharad-Waador and Keriax).  Fistinarius
put up a pretty tough fight, but everything else on D:50 was easy,
even the ghost lords and kings.  That killing spree took me to level
34, and Sharad-Waador gave me one more level.

I went to the Stone Circle, hung around until I could enter it, and
zapped Keriax with a death ray.  Then I headed back to Terinyo, picked
up the unicorn quests, and killed the black unicorn.  Since there was
no way I would ever achieve level 45 and be able to acquire the
crumpled scroll, I had the white unicorn cleanse me, collected the
Crown and Medal of Chaos as souvenirs of my adventure, and headed
