This was a fairly easy game overall. I only had a couple of close calls and
was prepared for both. Luck was with me most of the time, it seemed...
I found a pair of 7LB on UD:1, and later an AoLS in the big room. I killed
a tree in the animated forest and it dropped a RoDS, the only one found the
entire game. I spent the wish on rings of ice, as I loathe doing the ToEF
without them.
On my visit to Darkforge before the fire temple, I found Executor, which
blew the game wide open in the killing things department. I also disposed
of Kherab while there, which got me a few levels, IIRC.
The only real obstacle in the fire temple was the elementals. The grues and
demons all fell to Executor pretty quickly. I was worried about energy rays
from the ACW, as I've had many other characters die to them, but it never hit
me with one.
I finally got crowned about this time, with the none-too-exciting
Nature's Friend. I already had a very nice eternium tower shield. I did get
shock immunity, though, which isn't so bad.
After getting the RotHK, freeing Griff's spirit, vanquishing Keethrax,
reuniting Blup and his mother, and, unfortunately, completely forgetting
about the Pyramid, I decided it was time to get some more orbs.
The water temple was, as usual, quite easy. I then made a stop in the casino
to examine the wares. Picking up every single item to identify sure takes a
while. The best items were Preserver and a set of red dragon-scale mail.
The cat lord was one of those close calls. I was mentally prepared for him,
but forgot to wear a ring of see invisible. So I basically walked right into
him, lost 75% of my hitpoints, and watched my 7LB get destroyed.
Humanoid-slaying ammo and wands of teleport made quick work of him after
that. I had killed a lot of cats, and was delighted to gain ~1.45 million
experience. On to the the air temple. I had forgotten about the electrically
charged atmosphere and thus lost some miscellaneous, mostly unimportant,
stuff. Yulgash was easy. I walked right past the summoned monsters into the
temple proper, killed him in two hits, picked up the goods, and walked right
back out. The earth temple was similarly easy, except I gained a lot more
experience.
I should mention here that between the air temple and the unreal branch
were two greater vaults. I got extremely lucky in that both were of
the giant/ogre variety. The first contained Skullcrusher and Serpent's
Bite (could I get any more humanoid slaying?). The second wasn't quite
so flashy with the black tome of Alsophocus and the scorched spear.
Though none of the artifacts were very useful, I did have a lot of fun
clearing both of the vaults.
The mana temple wasn't too difficult. I disarmed most of the traps on the
perimeter, executed monsters at the door until Nuurag-Vaarn appeared, and
killed the Archmage with humanoid-slaying ammo. Lost a few stat points
(willpower and mana, I believe), but nothing crippling.
At this point I made a really good decision to do the rift/library. I was
worried about the item destruction aspect, but decided 5 more SoCR would
be nice. And nice they were, as I would have turned pink on D:50 without
them. Three giant rust monsters turned some of my equipment to dust, most
notably my [+2, +5] orcish helmet and my beloved [+2, +3] {St+5} gauntlets
of strength. The weird tome and the resulting scrolls were a good tradeoff,
though. I also offed the greater black unicorn 'round about this time, who
suprisingly never even touched me before falling to my axe.
I thought I might find some good items by doing the blue dragon caves, so
down I went. Upon finding a "room" full of greater molochs on the first
level, I immediately regretted my decision. So I tried out my shiny new
runed trident. It missed a few times, eventually didn't return, and got
picked up by a GM. I left it behind and teleported to the down stairs, which
was nestled among a good twenty GMs. I eventually got to the bottom level,
killed a few great blue wyrms (which I found were almost as easy as ancient
blue dragons), and found the ancient wyrm. I ended up berserking it in the
dark, with the aid of a few divine interventions.
I elected to avoid the bug temple like the plague (my last good character
died there), and go ahead and finish the game. I picked up my cache of
SoCR and other fun stuff in the ogre cave, and dove (through Darkforge,
of course). I found a lesser red dragon vault on D:47, cleared it, and
descended to place the orbs.
I basically waded into D:50. I gained a *lot* of corruptions, it being well
past day 90 by then. Getting surrounded by ghost lords was somewhat
alarming, but nothing much came of it (~35 years aging, IIRC). I killed all
of the balors in melee after realizing that my demon-slaying ammo just
wasn't doing enough damage. I used a lot of divine interventions in the
fight with Fistinarius, as well as an amulet of life saving. I had him down
to critically wounded, and figured I might as well keep hitting since I
had another AoLS at the ready. The normal chaos servants ended up being
the biggest problem. Near the end, they were doing more damage than
the balors were in combat, and poisoning me as well. I had also gained
the stiff muscles corruption by this time. Finally, I zapped my wand of
monster detection and "sensed the absence of monsters."
I talked to the unicorn, Thrundarr, and everyone in Terinyo (Khelevaster
didn't seem to care much that I had saved the world and his life, etc.), and
then left the Chain.
