My first victory ever.

*WARNING!* This is a typical 'my first victory post'. I.e., long, "eloquent",
and not edited very well.

I didn't think I would ever be able to complete this game, especially without
the save-scumming. Even my best save-scummed character was a mere lvl 19 DE
necromancer. And I really grew bored with the corrupted ways of save-scumming;
not much thrills there.

But, well, I did it. Still somewhat shocked. None of my characters ever seen
ToEF before. My previous HE wizard achieved level 19, did ToEW, TotHK and
died horrible death at, ugh, hands of a dragon turtle in the water dragon lair.
Ai'bolith, the trollish healer, achieved level 16, did ToEW, but had no means
of protecting his equipment from fire, so instead of going to ToEF delved
deeper into the Caverns of Chaos. On D: 26 was killed in melee by some crazed
werewolf king. In two turns.

Others were even worse.

After that last "werewolf accident" I thought I'd stop playing this game.
A game so obscenely hard is probably not worth playing anymore (I would return
anyway in a few months, these are my third or fourth "feverish fits of ADOM"),
but, luckily, a friend of mine got infected too. Of course, we discussed the
game alot, so... I decided to play one more time.

Pressing 'g' in the menu I instantly got Month of the Cup, which was most
appropriate. Despite all my hopes for dwarven clerics, they never fared well
in my hands. So I started thinking that high elven wizards were the way to go.
And Month of the Cup was, obviously, one the best birthsigns for them. (Maybe
Month of the Book is slightly better.)

So I went through questions and picked Fey-Blooded and Learned (yeah, crappy,
but I'm not a real hardcore ADOMer, after all). Still, the character had
quite weak stats - high elven wizards often get much better than that. That
almost made me abandon this pathetic creation, and, finally, stop playing
this devilish game.

But I decided to give it a try. I was quite pleased to find that I had three
spellbooks in my backpack (I thought initial Le 25 was a requirement for that).
These were Fire Bolt, Acid Bolt and Cure Disease. This made me almost happy.
Of course, Frost Bolt and Magic Missile would've been much better, but Cure
Disease would let me eat those kobold shaman corpses without too much
hesitation. (Hah... I haven't seen a single kobold shaman corpse this time.)

I'm not exactly sure what was next, but I think I met a group of bandits in
the wilderness. I thought this would ensure an easy Courage for me, but,
seemingly, there's not enough bandits in the game for that.

I can't even remember precisely, I never though this character would get big
enough for such things to matter.

(I must say that I make a lot of stupid errors, this time, probably, even
more than usual... The difference is - none of them were fatal.)

On VD: 3 I found an altar. It was neutral, but I still rejoiced. Popped out
around lvl 5, killed Kranach, delved to I: 5, gaining a few levels and finding
a few spellbooks, then, when I was lvl 8, converted an altar with Kranach
reward money (I, actually, spent something like 4500 on it, just in case), and
decided to go for a precrowning. After a long and tedious process I was
obscenely happy to find that Corellius rewarded me with The Protector. 'Wow!',
I thought, 'This certainly justifies all the equipment destruction and crappy
spellbooks'.

I must say, I really had a LOT of equipment desctruction, and throughout the
first half of the game, I was quite low on spells. Despite ~25 Le and Literacy
100 spellbooks only gave me a few castings, usually around 200-250. While this
phenomena was really pissing me off, I decided that The Protector was more than
enough reward for all the hassle.

So. Saved Yrrigs, and after some hesitation decided to go for a second
precrowning. Went to I: 5 again, and came back to altar around level 12.

Sacrificed a lot, but still only got 'very close'. I was already very low on
food, and Munxip's shop wasn't restocking somewhy, so I decided to give up on
this, then! Then I remembered something about 'extremely close' only popping
up once in a game. So I prayed.

My prayers remained unheard.

On my way back to surface I got to Starving, and prayed for satiation. What was
my joy (and horror, since I was Starving, after all), when instead of satiating
me Corellius granted me another gift!!!

And that was the Preserver.

'Wow', I thought again, 'something's fishy going on. On the one hand I get all
the accidents and trouble with spells... But on the other hand - I received two
such a mighty gifts!'

I was absolutely sure that something horrible would happen and kill me (I don't
know... moloch popping up on PC: 6... with speed 200... blocking me in a
corner... killing me with one blow...), but Preserver and Protector made me so
much more powerful!

And so, quite thrilled, I went to Puppy Cave. Got acid resistance from ants;
all in all it was very unremarkable. Nothing too good in a vault, nothing too
horrible on PC: 5.

After that, killed Hotzenplotz, mad doctor, cloaked ratling and Yergius. I
wasn't going to convert - too much hassle, and, anyway, I was, kind of,
"role-playing". Thus no Disarm Traps for me. What I forgot was the fact that
killing Yergius would make me a head of thieves guild and spoil my achievement
list. But oh well.

Of course I wasn't wearing amulet of order I received, because the Preserver
was so much better. Maybe that wasn't the brightest idea, at times I was a bit
too close to becoming neutral...

Usually at this time my spellcasters have Invisibility, Teleport and teleport
control (all received in first five levels of the Infinite Dungeon, which is a
real blessing for low-level characters). So I would go to SMC and through the
Unremarkable Dungeon. But this character, except for his gifts, was quite
unlucky. He hasn't found any blink dogs, and he had no Teleport, either. And
so I just went to CoC.

(I also forgot to visit Barbarian's Glade, and that, possibly, left me without
Courage. Among those ~35 bandits I killed perhaps 10 are initial wilderness
encounter, and some five more - those I killed early in CoC. Visiting
Barbarian in time might've granted me an important skill... *sigh*)

My only problem at a time was food, and Arena solved that problem. So I went
deeper, passed Big Cave, which was extremely spidery, found si, found crown
of leadership in a lesser vault (wasn't too excited, but, sure, this is a nice
headgear, and stayed on my head through the most of the game), pillaged some
bee hive and approached the outer limits of Dwarftown. Killed mimic of
Waldenbrook fame, got my quests going, and received my usual Rolf's Companion
from Dwarven Mystic, which served me well through the rest of the game. You
know, RC and the Protector really work wonders on your hp together.

I would bless my potions of water at this time, but, unfortunately, I had none
(except for one given by Thrundarr - and I was saving that for Griff).

My random monster was claw bug, and that wasn't hard, I found one on my way
back to surface, since I already was around level 16, and was hurrying to
the Pyramid.

The Pyramid and Dwarven Graveyard were relatively easy. Traps weren't too bad
on me, despite the fact I haven't had Detect Traps skill. Rehetep gave a
little more fight than usual, but Griff and Nonnak died easily. (I got quite
a few wight corpses in the graveyard, and was LN again, but killing those
two got me back to L.) So I was equipped quite well, and had
Teleportation+control, gained somewhere in CoC.

Next stop - SMC.

The rain really drenched me one last time on my way there, but what was
worrying me the most was the fact that I got a little low on food again.
I tried to buy some at Munxip's, but he didn't restock yet (whoa, he's a real
slow thinker, isn't he?) Still, I was hoping I'd find enough food on my way
to HMV.

I was wrong.

While SMC was quite easy (I just stalked around invisibly, of course,
teleporting whenever in trouble), UD seemed to be totally devoid of food.
A herb level didn't give me any stomafillia.

So, finally, around UD: 8 I had to pray for food, lest I died. I wasn't too
bothered by this, because I was in a good standing with my god...

Or was I?

Divine manna satiated me, but then Corellius decided to punish me, destroying
all of my equipment, including ring of ice and ring of mental stability, which
I picked up in a dungeon shop on UD: 3. Shit, what was I wearing these for?

Quite pissed off I went to HMV, did everything I could (not much for lawfuls),
bought some food and spellbooks from Leggot, then ventured back to Dwarftown.

At Dwarftown altar I sacrificed a huge heap of gold, trying to improve my
standing with Corellius, but, strangely enough, was punished again.

Second case of equipment destruction in a row. Shit, what was I thinking?..

Absolutely pissed off, I was on a brink of throwing the keybord out of window.
After a few cups of coffee, though, I cooled down somewhat, and decided to see
what else the game has in store for me.

Something nasty, I thought.

Well, it wasn't that bad. I ventured past the animated forest (easy), found
Khelavaster, and as my spirits took another dive, remembering that I neither
had AoLS nor RoDS, I went back to Dwarftown, hoping that I'd find either of
these soon. What do you think? that unidentified necklace in my backpack was,
indeed, AoLS (I've heard a lot that saving Khelly is a Big Pain In The Arse,
but, strangely enough, never had any problems with it, - either I died shortly
after finding him, or was lucky enough to find random AoLS/RoDS).

Putting Ogre quest aside, I hurried back to Khelly, and, with a feeling of
great relief, gave him AoLS. Then, cautiously, went back to DT, immediately
stashing my precious SoCRs (as well as certain other valuable destructibles)
in Mystic's room. Then everything went relatively well to a certain point.

I completed all of Thrundarr's quests (that daemon drained my - not exactly
high - stats a lot). Received training from that warrior. Sacrificed scythe of
corupption as soon as I could. And even went to Gremlin's Cave, although it
ranks with the most useless places in the game.

But at least it's real easy with the 'Light' spell. Sacrificed the phial, of
course.

At the same time corruption started to work on me. I can't recall when my
first corruption occured, but what I do remember is that it was the dreaded
Mana Battery.

I was pretty willing to accept it, since I didn't rely a lot on wands, and
the reduction in my spell costs was quite nice. Unfortunately, I didn't think
about what consequences would I have to face much later on...

The next two corruptions were relatively beneficial - a Magic Map and a PV
bonus. Although I had those seven SoCRs, I really hesitated to read them,
because losing a couple of "positive" corruptions for getting rid of one
"negative", which wasn't exactly negative for my wizard either - the
perspective was quite ugly.

Finally I decided that I can live with MB. OMG, what an idiot I was.

Well... What do I do next? ToEW, of course. Which wasn't exactly easy only
because I still haven't had neither Frost Bolt nor Ice Ball. And even quite a
few lesser vaults I've found (there were lots of these this time around) didn't
give me those much needed ice spells. So I had to rely on Bridge Building.
Luckily, I put a few level increases into it, and trained with Yrrigs, so BB
was around perhaps 70 at the time.

I also had SoA which made carrying those logs around much easier.

Otherwise, ToEW was simple, if only because I knew the technique.
Invisibility, crossbows, fire - and the Orb of Water soon was mine to claim.
Which, along with Preserver and even without Sword of Nonnak got me to Wi 32
(on a side note, I've never seen Wi 48, with natural max Wi 17, Sword of
Nonnak, Purifier, Preserver, Orb and that bulging cranium corruption I still
only got 47 - well, that's my luck). After some fooling around in DH, I was
ready to take on the TotHK. Again, carrying a lot of logs with me.

While all this bridge building was somewhat bothering me, a proud an' mighty
spellcaster, I was willing to accept it, knowing that there are things much
worse than not having Frost Bolt.

Such as not having rings of ice. The one I had was blasted to high heavens by
Corellius.

So, after the TotHK (which was quite unremarkable this time around) I became a
little puzzled, being afraid to go to ToEF. I had no rings of ice, only two
blessed fireproof blankets, and while I might've been able to collect enough
sources of fire resistance, I'd prefer immunity anyway.

Should I go deeper into CoC? That's what my Ai'bolith did in a similar
situation.

That's how he died.

Still, I didn't have much choice. So, cleared CoC Graveyard (easy), killed
Banshee (was very afraid of fire creatures, but what almost got me was
Shadow Wyrm; also got giant slug corpse - acid immunity).

Had an extremely stupid equipment destruction case - fired a Lightning Bolt
into the unseen area. There was a wall, of course.

Around D: 27 (which was after D: 28 - weird) I found that firewall I've heard
of, but never seen it before. I would've tried Darkforge at this point (there
was nothing else left), but on D: 24 there was a neutral altar. So, instead,
I converted it and went through a long, long, LONG process of getting crowned.

Used up all my food, still was very close only, then remembered that thingie
about only getting to 'extremely close' once, prayed, well... got crowned.

This is evil, I must say. I think I could've done that much earlier, I don't
even know how much time I spent sacrificing, weeks, perhaps?

But, anyway, instead of something crappy I was expecting I got ring of immunity
and shock immunity from Corellius. Ring of immunity is certainly among my
favourite artifacts, but, on a second thought, I already had two immunities -
shock and acid, - mummy wrapping gave me another, and I also had a ring of
elemental mastery - found it in some lesser vault. Oh well. Anyway, that
[+5,+5] is nice, eh?

(This was around lvl 25.)

So, nothing to do again.

Ventured to Darkforge. Wasn't too bad with all my lightning spells, but nothing
too good in the storage rooms. A few dragon scale armours, perhaps. And that
Crown of Science was nice to have in my backpack, but I'm not an experienced
enough player to fancy the idea of being deliberately doomed.

And no, didn't drink from the pools. Neither in Darkforge, nor anywhere else
in the game. I would use a pool if it would be two steps away from the altar,
with me being in an excellent standing with my deity and not having any
precious intrinsics, such as teleport control. This equals to - I never use the
pools.

I don't know, maybe if I was really desperate to save Khelly...

Next stop - ToEF. Unequipped all of my vulnerable non-artifacts, and prayed
(not in game) for my two only blankets to work.

Huh, they worked. And I had some ice spells by that time (from >D: 20 vaults).
Almost used them up, but all in all it was relatively easy if boring.
ToEF is really densely populated.

Ok then, deeper into the CoC. Casino was crappy. Got 7LB, yes, but nothing
decent other than that - bracers of speed and half-dozen spellbooks. (And there
were some ten or twenty Spellbooks of Light and Darkness. How Zelazny. How
useless.)

After finding the shortcut to surface I relocated my stash from DT to the MM
hut. Well, wasn't much good for me... I went to DT often anyway - to sell
the stuff, remove rust, sacrifice and train after the stat drains...

Battle bunnies were REAL easy - I just teleported in, killed Bugs, killed the
only battle bunny on the level, and that's all.

Cat Lord, on the other hand, was *HELL*.

No, worse.

Lightning fast and hits like a falling whale. Despite my 120 DV and 50 PV.

I asked for quite a few divine interventions (simply drinking PoUHs would've
been suicide), but still, at one point I only had 1 hp left. Whew. Acidballed
him to death somehow... got 1,500,000 xp, and a couple of levels :-)

Just before the ToEA there was a greater Giant vault. Yes, I was truly
excited - my first greater vault ever :-) Somewhat tough, but nothing I
couldn't have handled. Crappy artifacts, though - black tome and Executor.
I just left black tome there and sacced the axe.

ToEA was quite boring. Got a few nice potions and scrolls destroyed. But the
main problem was clearing the inner chamber. I just couldn't clear the
entrance to stand there... When I finally managed to achieve it with Fireballs,
I just magic-missiled my way to victory. The worst thing was the quickling
queen that stabbed me in the back, severely poisoning me, but I dispatched her
quickly with my bolt spells.

ToEE was MUCH easier, although a LOT more boring. Those elementals and stuff
are not that dangerous, I just proceeded carefully, falling back when needed
and luring the monsters into my line of fire.

(There was a neutral altar just before ToEE on a cavernous level, which I
converted but didn't use much - I prefer a safer atmosphere of DT.)

I'd've really liked to do the Rift at this point, but my climbing was still
somewhat low, despite me putting lots of points into it. That's killing Yerius,
yeah... I also didn't have one of the needed corruptions (and Quickling Tree
thus was closed for me, too). Temple of Bugs was too scary, and Minotaur Maze
already closed - well, I didn't want to go there anyway.

So I ventured deeper into the CoC.

Next level after the ToEE - another Greater Vault.

This time - undead.

Whew...

I spent almost an hour there, but finally managed to clear it, although at
times I was quite desperate, to the point of using item-destructing ball
spells... Teleported away once or twice. Those liches were EVIL.

But, strangely enough, none of the liches in the large chamber stat-drained
me. Only the four artifact guardians (lich kings) did that. I was pretty
shocked when the first of them quickly ruined my toughness, dexterity and
willpower. Then I just stayed away from them, bolting them to second death.

Artifacts were quite decent, although these were weapons (yeah, I don't
like artifact weapons, they're crap generally). Purifier and Skullcrusher for
me. While Skullcrusher mostly stayed in my backpack, Purifier has seen quite
some use - both for its Wi bonus and slaying abilities.

All this time I was returning to surface quite often, to mess with my precious
goodies, identify new items, sell, sacrifice etc.

I even spent some time running around the map through the mountains, but that
only got my Climbing from 82 to 84. And a few quickling random encounters
didn't give me much corpses.

Up to D: 47 it was quite easy, molochs and titans were not much of a trouble
for me, but Unreal Cave System met me with an Earth Elemental tension room.

And a big one at that. This was almost worse then Greater Undead vault. I
don't know, maybe these were very experienced elementals? Nevertheless, I
almost killed myself by casting too many spells. They seemed to be not
exactly efficient enough against those monstrosities.

Scroll shop on Unreal lvl 2 - useless. Identifies, greater identifies,
uncursings mostly. No SoCRs.

I went to lvl 4 of the unreal caves, and there, finally, I got both Climbing
100 and the thin and nimble corruption. (I've spent quite a few SoCRs removing
corrupted tissue, apish looks, poison hands and unholy aura - these popped up
time after time. But, well, 6 from Khelly, 1 from HMV, a couple of random,
and I still hoped for MM and Bug Temple.)

Coming back to surface, I easily destroyed Riurry and decided to do a quickling
tree. It was a breeze, but only got me around a dozen corpses. And no royalty.

Well, nice anyway. No stomacemptia, but Remove Curse saved the day.

The Rift. I fell. I had both dexterity corruptions, no satiated, no burdened,
lucky and FS. And weared an ankh. Still fell. What the hell?! Was that SoA
not taken into the account by the game?! Did it think I was in fact
overburdened?

Anyway, lost some nice stuff, but nothing I couldn't've lived without.

Otherwise, Rift was easy (it was meant for lower level characters, if I
understand correctly), and so was the Sinister Library, although Acid Vortex
and Shadow Wyrm were unpleasant, because I was afraid to use my spells, not
wanting to harm those precious spellbooks.

Spent some time learning spells, got the weird tome. Got SoCRs from MM.

Went to assassins' guild (I cleared it out at some point earlier in the game)
to learn trickier spells - teleportitis is bad. Got a few Le increases from
studying that Wish spellbook. Wasted two uncursed SoCRs - forgot to bless
them, had no blessed SoCRs with me, and those apish looks raised their ugly
head again.

Then, Temple of Bugs. Surprisingly enough, it was very easy. And even gave me a
couple of nice spellbooks, as well as got me to ~46 lvl.

Last thing to do on surface - water dragon cave. I already had a lot of
blue helms, AoWBs, and even some RotFs just in case, and Blup finally agreed to
teach me Swimming. Having around 500 hp, I was still afraid. I couldn't forget
how one of those dragon turtles dealed over 300 hp damage to my HE wizard in
one turn. Talk about instakills.

But no, it was easy too. Nothing good in the treasury, however (I don't know,
maybe Soaker was there, but I haven't noticed it). Lots of rusty cheap stuff.
Phew.

As I went for the DF shortcut, I received the trident, but, well. It was
virtually useless for me.

Mana Temple. And I didn't have a lightsource. And I didn't have lots of SoPs.
And I left my CoPs on the surface. I, actually, kind of forgot that I was going
for MT... Still, I didn't want to go back, so decided to give it a try.

Spent all of my WoTDs.

It was a mess, of course. But I prevailed. Lost a couple of Mana points casting
from health, but all in all it was quite acceptable.

So, what do I do next? Finish the game, or mess with the Ancient Karmic Wyrm?
I decided to go for the latter. Ugh...

Even the first level of Blue Dragon Caves scared the hell out of me. I went
back to Unreal Caves, and, while waiting for my PP to restore, an Ogre attacked
me. I just meleed it to death. Then accidentally stepped off the stairs.

Boo!!!

The Ancient Karmic Wyrm suddenly became very angry with me.

He was easy to kill, but there was no more reason for me to go to those scary
caves. So I left them be. Okay, no Filk quest (I didn't know my first kill
anyway), no emperor moloch, no TotRR. So be it, I don't care much.

I was already urging to see if I can finish this game after all. So I collected
all my stuff, and went down to D: 48. Easy.

D: 49. Easy. I had no potion of uselessness, however, and I don't even know
where do I get one :-( (Is it guaranteed? If anyone knows, write me -
r underscore axenov at mail dot ru)

D: 50.

The fight was quite tedious and unnerving at the same time, but I dispatched
most of the monsters finally. Had to rest, got a few nasty corruptions, but
I still had a few SoCRs remaining.

So I handled the levers and was going to destroy them. I had exactly TWO wands
of destruction. With 0 charges left, of course (remember that Mana Battery? I
still had it, first in my list).

I've never seen the WoDs in action. I thought they acted like a bolt spell,
or maybe as an Improved Fireball. So I stood some five steps away from the
lever an' zapped one of 'em.

BANG!!! WHOOSH!!!

Walls go down, but the lever is still intact.

THE FUCKING LEVER IS STILL INTACT!!!

OMFFFFFG, I MESSED UP!!!

i messed up

After scratching my face and other parts of the body for some five minutes
I started thinking.

Maybe I can get rid of MB and recharge the remaining WoD? No, I have 9
corruptions, 3 blessed SoCRs, and 1 uncursed PoCC.

Not nearly enough. And I can't go back to the White Unicorn, I can't.

And I only have four WoDCs, not enough to cover FIVE spaces around the lever.

OMFG.

So well, I destroyed the remaining lever. Zapped the WoMD - there were two
afraid Ghost Lords on the level. Spent some time mystic-shovelling, killed
them. Zapped my last remaining WoMD.

OMFFFG!!!

There's another! There's another Ghost Lord on the level! Was it just spawned?!
I don't know. I killed him, then spent some time desperately searching for
more monsters. None. But I can't be sure.

I spent some more time Creating Items, but haven't got anything I needed.

Finally I thought - well, I messed up, so what? I'm freakin' tired.

I'll just go back to surface, cure my corruption and leave this blasted
Drakalor Chain to never get back again.

And we'll see, maybe this still counts as a win.

You know what, it counted :-)

I might've spent some more time scurrying around, but, well... There were quite
a few things I haven't done...

Oh, I am satisfied anyway.

- no Wishes (didn't drink from the pools, no RoDS/WoWi, didn't cast Wish -
was afraid of both PP cost and stat cost)
- only one PoGA (the one from Thrundarr... or Khelly?.. whoever it was)
- no PoE, methinks?
- no potion of uselessness :-(
- didn't even try to mess with the ultra-endish stuff
- never really bothered with farming and stat training
- never really bothered with smithing
- no companions (should've tried those SoFSes in the SMC)
- no Courage, Detect Traps, no Climbing training, oh well... messy.
- almost messed up on the D: 50
- Mana Battery is the nastiest coruption
