Well, this is the farthest I've gotten to date and half the time I was at a complete loss as to what I was supposed to do. The beginning was very tough and no matter how much food I carried I kept running out, and lacking food preservation was a pain throughout the entire game. This is the only time I've ever had to pray for food. I decided to get healing instead of try to save the puppy at this point, then went over to the CoC. Completed the first quest easily (I think it was a hell hound), and solved the problem with not being able to read. For the second, I decided to go through the forest and back. Midway back I looked down at my hitpoints and saw to my horror that I had only 22 left out of 200. Desperately, I quaffed a random unidentified potion, hoping it would heal me. Instead, it turned out to be a potion of education, and I gained the Detect Item Status skill! I returned to Dwarftown and completed the next few quests, which awarded me with the dwarven shield, and picked up the dwarven axe on the way. I then went out, did the pyramid, DarkForge, the graveyard, the puppy, and got to the HMV, then returned to the CoC. Went to the dusty cave, drained the pool there, got teleport control from it. Went down to the next level, found the stairs, after I went down though I couldn't figure out the maze and the traps were annoying me so I left. Went to Darkforge, drained the pools there, only managed to get doomed and teleport and lose teleport control (thankfully I had kept two rings of teleport control just in case). There were a lot of unidentified items in my inventory at this point so I read a blessed scroll of identify, and found in my inventory a blessed ring of djinni summoning! Went back to the CoC and saved Khel, though in hindsight I probably should have wished for something else, but at that point there wasn't much I could think of that I needed, I was doing very well up until then. Went over to the HMV looking for something (dont remember what) and saw a scroll of familiar summoning in the shop, bought it, went to the small cave and recited two scrolls of danger and this, and an experienced quickling king appeared! At this point I thought I had it made. I ordered the quickling king to wait in DarkForge when I tried to to the ToEF (having been unable to teleport before, there was not one fireproof blanket or ring of ice in this game). Having never been there before, it turned out to be more than I could handle, and I teleported out with 30 hp left. I returned to DarkForge to collect my junk, then went to look for a climbing set in the gremlin cave. However, since I had no light, I had to leave my quickling king behind again, and hacked through the dark to retrieve it. I detected that it was cursed, and blessed it. Retrieved my quickling and some of the items left in the CoC and went over the mountains to the northwest. There was a royal vault on the first level of this dungeon, I teleported in, picked up the gold, then back to where my companion was. However, to my dismay, my friend attacked me, as well as this giant (I didn't check to see what it was, I was too busy trying not to die. I failed.)
