I don't remember Tal's early adventure very well, because it was a long time ago. You see, Tal had some unusual experiences. His early quest, however, was pretty ordinary. He did the Keethrax quest and took off for the CoC. He proceeded through the water temple, ToEF, and high king's tomb without much trouble (building on a sequence of strange premonitions, almost as if the memories of heroes past were helping him).

Then things got interesting at D:36. I suddenly felt truly excited upon entering the level. I zapped a wand of monster detection and saw a bunch of red l's, D's, and W's. I thought, hey, fire creatures! Rock on! I entered, only to find that the creatures were no longer red, but a variety of changing colors. Yes, I'd stumbled into a greater vault of karmics. I quickly established that none of my spells were any good against karmic dragons of any age. I hauled out my collection of arrows and quarrels of dragon slaying. I found that I could lure the dragons down a long hallway one or two at a time and dispose of them that way. Then I ran out of dragon-slaying ammo. I discovered that normal ammo just didn't do the job fast enough. I still managed to clear out the outer area of the vault and examined everything. The only thing of note was the Far Slayer. Very cool, even though it doesn't have any special powers. I opened the central room and found myself staring down about 20 great karmic wyrms (none of them named, oddly). I got a couple of them before deciding they were just too much and would have to wait.

Sometime about then I decided to experiment with the writing sets I'd found. I wrote a few nifty scrolls and then made the unfortunate choice to try a SoCR. I was overjoyed to succeed, until I noticed that my Mana was down to 1. It never got over 10 throughout the rest of the game.

I continued on and made it down to D:46, at which point Tal was ambushed and unrecoverably destroyed by Internal-Artifact-Generation, the bug. (The rumor about bugs being nasty is true!) So that was it for Tal, until a couple of months later when I remembered that I had an old save on the machines in the computer lab. Woohoo, revival (at the cost of being pulled back in time to the air temple)!

Tal shrugged off the effects of time travel and resumed his journey. Yuglash fell to 2 or 3 quarrels of humanoid slaying. Then I got a lesser vault of red dragons on D40, which gave me
Skullcrusher
Whirlwind
a SoCR
a pair of SLB
a ring of minor elemental mastery
a ring of elemental mastery
bracers of resistance
about 500K gold

Shortly after, I got this mysterious message. No creature was in sight, even when I wore a ring of see invisible. It happened right after I dipped a brass amulet in a potion of exchange.

You pick up the silver amulet.
Something on the ground is crunched! Something on the ground is crunched!
Something on the ground is broken! Something on the ground is broken!
Something on the ground is smashed to pieces! You hear a pained thundering
roar.

I never did figure out what had happened.

I eventually made it down to D:46 safely, after saving and restoring a few times to pass the dreadful named bug. (They're the only enemies for whom it's acceptable to use backups.) Sure enough, D:46 was a greater vault. This one really was fire creatures. Woohoo!
Long Sting
Thunderstroke
The scorched spear
1 SLB
1 staff of power
1 quicksilver quarterstaff
1 rabbit knife
about 250K gold
OK, I guess there wasn't really anything too great in there after all, but it was fun tearing through it with my elementalist Frost Bolt.

Then a greater moloch (my first ever) showed up out of nowhere. Kya! After losing over half my HP in one hit, I stepped well away and pelted him with quarrels of demon slaying.

What does the "You suddenly remember your ancestors." message mean? I thought it was related to the apish corruption, but the stats on that corruption never changed, even after a lot of those messages.

The earth temple always annoys me, but this time it went easier, after I discovered that stone grues and earth elementals apparently count as constructs and are vulnerable to construct slaying ammo. I had to fall back on Burning Hands for the Ancient Stone Beast.

The mana temple was rough, of course, but not that bad. Nuurag-Vaarn fell to a few quarrels of humanoid slaying. (Do you get the idea that I like missiles of * slaying? They're great!) I decided to pass on the blue dragon caves for the time being.

I was up to N in corruptions by the time I got to D:48. I figured it didn't look too good, but I might as well go out in a blaze of glory (or a writhing mass of primal chaos, that is). I played with the anomalies and descended. I got Hammerhead for my uselessness gift. Before heading down to D:50, I used up all my potions of booze charging my wands of teleportation, acid, and digging. Then I guzzled the 20 or 30 potions of boost [stat] that I'd collected. My stats were up to 40 or 50, and my speed was over 300 briefly. (In hindsight, I should have saved the speed boost for after I actually engaged the balors -- it wore off too quickly.) I equipped my quarrels of demon slaying and headed down.

Right away I read my blessed scroll of magic mapping and zapped my wand of monster detection. That's a pretty overwhelming sight, all those cute C's packing half the screen. I forged ahead to the chaos gate (role-playing an honest player who didn't already know about D:50 from assorted spoilers ^_^). Halfway down the last hallway, "suddenly Fistanarius, the greater balor, appears out of nowhere" right in front of me. That was exciting, especially after two or three of his friends appeared in the room behind me on the next turn. I went a round or two with Fisty in melee before I decided that was going nowhere good. I made a, er, tactical withdrawal with my wand of teleportation and went after the normal balors. I actually didn't have too much trouble with them. 5 or 6 hits with quarrels of demon slaying took them out. Only one of the nine balors actually summoned help on me -- I won't complain. My only problem was when creatures would pick up my quarrels before I could recover them; fortunately I'd collected like 50 demon slayers by that point. I eventually took out Fisty and the 7 balors from the main room. I was corrupted up to R and surrounded by chaos warriors, and figured I was about done for. Suddenly I remembered that I still had several writing sets and two blank scrolls. I used my next-to-last teleport to get back to the stairs and up. A second later I was down to 1 Mana again, but also had one precious SoCR! (My second attempt failed.) I blessed and read it instantly and returned to D:50. I bashed, shot, and cast my way to the levers. The last balor had me back to corruption R and well past before he died. I was three steps away from the second lever with a WMoPC blocking the way. It actually managed to hit me, of course, and slowed me to half speed. I fireballed the way clear and somehow managed to get past the chaos mutants to pull the second lever. I wasted no time in teleporting to the stairs (with my last scroll of teleportation) and getting out. To my vast relief, the gate stayed closed.

I revisited the greater vault of karmics to clear it out with the dragon slayers I'd found further down. I got
The robes of resistance
The emerald dagger
Wyrmlance
The hammer of the gods
A staff of the magi
A spellbook of Acid Ball! Woohoo! (A bit late now....)
A potion of education (my first ever) that yielded Gardening (woo...)
A PoGA
Yet another pair of SLB
400K gold
Would have been real nice to have had Acid Ball a bit sooner. *sigh*

I also found a scroll of dark predictions. "You suddenly know that 99% of your soul belong to the forces of Chaos." *shudder*

I was about to go do the unicorn quest to get cleansed, but I had a sudden nightmare of dying from corruption, possibly even (very embarrassingly) background radiation. (Is the corrupted glade always a corruption zone?) I decided to first drain the 3 pools in the CoC that I'd left untouched (I'd had a lot of bad experiences with pools in previous games) in hopes of getting a wish for SoCRs. Nope. But I did pick up intrinsic invisibility, which turned out very nice, because I decided to head to the blue dragon caves next. (In retrospect, the pools were a very bad idea, since I could have gotten corrupted.) On the second level, a blue dragon dropped a PoCC (the first of this game). Yes! One less corruption. I no longer had to panic whenever a chaos creature got close to me.

Barney fell surprisingly easily to Wyrmlance (berserk plus speed boosted to 250 or so). It's one of my new favorite artifacts. I lost some neat equipment, of course, notably my wand of destruction and bracers of resistance. Then it was unicorn time. Riurry was startlingly easy. Does he have anything except a moderate melee attack? He doesn't even corrupt. I meleed him with the emerald dagger. No more corruption. My old friends in Terinyo sing my praises, and I leave.

WAHOO!
