Tried the SMC, but was repelled by swarms of monsters and rapidly climbing experience levels. Found and killed Kranach, saved Yrrigs, couldn't do the pass cave due to a river right by the entrance, killed Hotzenplotz (after getting hit 4 times and knocked down to 1 HP by one of his bouncers -- yikes!), and departed for the CoC. Nothing of note until a lesser vault of undead on D:3 that yielded a lot of nice reading, especially Improved Fireball and Ice Ball. Had another probable near-death experience with a master mimic (what the HECK was that doing on D:3?); fortunately I have a habit of not trusting funny-colored items that appear in explored areas, so I shot magic missiles at it and managed to panic it just before it reached melee range. I proceeded without incident, clearing out a lesser vault of gnolls / hyenas and a tension room of wolves for experience. (I was at level 13 upon reaching Dwarftown!) I managed to save some stomafillia and spenseweed patches in the big room (yay). My newly blessed scroll of identify revealed that I had all kinds of goodies in my big bag, notably some bracers of resistance (!). Then Thrundarr asked me to slay a werewolf lord. >_< I spent some time hauling stuff to Waldenbrook for money so I could buy the sword of sharpness he had. My current problem: I have no detect traps and I'm still lawful, and the window for the pyramid is rapidly closing. I head for the PC and UD, hoping for a neutral / chaotic altar. None in the PC, but the gnoll / hyena vault on the bottom drops all kinds of nice stuff, including a pair of seven league boots! Finally I find a neutral altar in the UD. I convert, explore through to the alpine village, then return to Yergius. I'm at level 16 already, so it looks grim for proving myself in time to get Detect Traps for the pyramid. However, one kobold tension room on ID:1 gets me enough pickpocketing experience that he welcomes me to the guild on my return. Just takes persistence, really ... (and a timely "Your Pick Pockets skill increases by 8 to 9"). I did the pyramid with little trouble (although the living wall in the welcoming committee made me nervous). I wasted Nonnak and his cohorts, released Griff the graceful way (did you know that you get a neat message about him bursting into flames if he's in sight when you pour the holy water?), munched down 4 wight corpses, and returned to the CoC. I started collecting herbs and hauling cooked corpses to Shalla's altar. (Note: you apparently gain "Fate smiles upon you" at "very close," not "spiritually invincible" as I'd always thought, at least according to my Revelation spell). On about my third trip, what to my wondering eyes should appear but a werewolf lord. Woohoo, back on track! It took surprisingly little work to get up to extremely close, but I was only L, and my prayer remained unheard -- a quick calculation confirmed that I was a level short of precrowning. I continued down, poked my head into the DH, and met a lich king. I took him out with Burning Hands, gained a level, and got precrowned (for my first time ever) with Wyrmlance -- yes! I finished Thrundarr's quests with no trouble. I descended, picked up a few yummy corpses in the CoC graveyard, embarrassed the Water Temple, and headed back up for the ToEF. A ghul dropped a helm of water breathing on the way. ^_^ I got crowned at "very close" -- I'd sacrificed a ton of cooked corpses and 3 artifacts, so I tried praying, and sure enough.... Shalla gave me the ring of immunity. O_o I found Blup's mom, traded in my Snake from Beyond corpse to Guth'Alak, and headed for the ToEF. I picked up a few levels (and poison hands) from a tension room of fire demons. I humiliated the opposition in the Fire Temple (I LOVE Ice Ball), picking up about 8 levels overall, carefully converted the altar for the fun of it, and left. I retreived the RotHK without incident and went back to the CoC to dive for the end. No problem until the Casino, when my worst fears about unholy aura came true: "You pick up the mangled tome (unpaid, 32864gp). Someone mumbles: "Ask if ye have any questions." Someone shouts: "Stop chasing away my customers!". An alarm gong is rung! You feel as if transgressing some law." I decided that when a shopkeeper launches an unprovoked attack on me, it's perfectly lawful to help myself to the goods. An amusing scene ensued as I teleported around the Great Gift Shop grabbing everything that looked remotely interesting. Some of the guards probably walked off with good stuff too, but I still came out of it with a ton of loot, including a crown of regeneration, some amulets of free action (finally!), Executor, a dagger of death, some missiles of demon and dragon slaying, a wand of death (first time I've found one of these), and a potion of education. My alignment didn't change from L+ (despite scorching a bunch of guards, including the big one), but I became cursed (not doomed) -- probably from shooting at the shopkeeper. Pretty good outcome, overall. Things only got better when I found a lesser vault of white dragons two floors down. The game locked up as I was picking stuff up, possibly something to do with the water elemental messenger's arrival. >_< That's what backups are for (and nothing else!). Back to the casino to do the whole *@$! thing over again. This time, the vault yielded 2 PoCC, 1 7LB, 1 SoCR, 1 sword of sharpness, and 3 ancient white dragon corpses (To.) Pretty good, but bugs still suck. I continued down and collected the ring of the master cat (first time I'd managed this -- very nice!). Things were normal until D:38, when I found a lesser vault of mixed creatures -- I'd never seen such a thing before. A bat dropped a SoCR, but nothing else notable came of it. I blew through the Air Temple with Executor, humanoid-slaying arrows, and Fireball. I found a lesser vault of golems on D:42, which yielded a PoGA and my first-ever eternium golem, who turned out to be immune to shock, to my surprise and displeasure, but fell to Ice Ball. (Incidentally, diamond golems seem to be immune to everything ... odd.) I rocked the Earth Temple with ball spells. A balor showed up, but I nailed him with demon-slaying quarrels. I zipped through the unreal caves and won a RoDS from an "apparently deserted shop." Hmm, let's see ... yep, "spellbooks of Acid Ball," please. I charged through the Mana Temple with surprising ease, thanks to Acid Ball and a few missiles of humanoid slaying. I descended, picking up the staff of the archmagi for my uselessness gift (nice, but I'd rather wield two shields), and demolished the opposition on D:50 with Acid Ball, Frost Bolt, a bit of Burning Hands, missiles of demon slaying, and Executor (to mop up). Oddly, all the walls on the left half were undiggable, so I had to go through the WMoPC chamber to reach the lever rooms. Anyone else had that happen? Tying up loose ends, I tore through the blue dragon caves with Wyrmlance and occasional spells, picking up 1 PoCC, 1 wand of wishing (with 0 charges, but still cool -- the first one I'd ever found), 1 PoE, 1 SoCR, 1 PoGA, and a bunch of corpses that raised Dx by about 6 and Pe by 2 (great blue wyrms). I removed my corruption on my own, killed Riurry anyhow, killed Kherab and fooled around with smithing briefly, got 3 more PoCC from Guth'Alak in exchange for my corpses (I LOVE Cooking), basked in everyone's appreciation for a minute, and left. Overall, I think my fighter winner was more fun, but this guy definitely had the easiest time. Fighters just don't have the range of tactical options open to experienced wizards. I think I like hurthlings. Food Preservation + Cooking is worth an extra 3 PoCC or so, plus the convenience of not losing useful corpses because you're too bloated to eat them in time. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Background Information ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Name: Talan Race: male Hurthling Class: Wizard Eye color: light blue Hair color: brown Complexion: tanned Height: 2'11" Weight: 83 pounds Age: 36 (grown-up) Star sign: Book Birthday: 24/Book (day 54 of the year) YOUR HISTORY: Your mother is a mighty enchantress. Your vast knowledge on the legends and the lore of your people made you very popular with your friends because of all the exciting stories you knew. In your youth you became seriously ill and suffered for many years. When your disease finally was cured you were left weakened, both physically and spiritually, and bereft of the joys of youth. As a young adult you had to work a lot to finance your apprenticeship. You were often tired and exhausted but all this was forgotten, when you finally achieved your goal.
