This was by far my best Barbarian ever, and the first one I ever made into a magic user (I don't touch spellbooks with fighter types until Concentration and Literacy are at 100). I had the incredible luck to find two RoDS on the way down to Khelavaster, so I was able to wish for Concentration as well as the AoLS. It took me a loooong time to train it up to 100, and an even longer time to train Literacy up all the way. When I finally managed it, I had a spellbook-reading session, and found that their effects were somewhat erratic. Sometimes I could manage even advanced spellbooks (note my ability to cast Identify) but sometimes even simple spellbooks would blow up in my face. Still, I went down the Rift to pick up some more bolt spells. Even though I only studied spells I actually considered useful, and was carrying a pack full of spellbooks when I left, the librarian gave me the weird tome. My Toughness took a beating from all that studying, but it hadn't been very high to start with, and was retrained with morgia. I had surprisingly little trouble in the Bug Temple. Perhaps this was because I left it until rather late in the game, or perhaps it was because I had pretty good DV, thanks to my maxed-out dodging skill and highly trained shield skill. I was mostly able to get away with whacking the greater claw bugs on the surface, although I relied more on bolt spells on the second level. Sadly not many corpses were left owing to my lack of Food Preservation. I don't know just why the Earth Temple gave me such a hard time. Maybe it was because of my lack of Toughness and PV (note that I have the very light and bulging cranium corruptions). Maybe it was because I was meleeing the monsters without the benefit of Find Weakness. Maybe making myself invisible for the duration would have helped - I'm pretty sure that earth elementals can't see invisible. Anyway, I had a lot of difficulty in there, constantly needing to retreat and heal, but I'd dealt with most of the stone grues and the Ancient Stone Beast, so I thought I could handle it.
