Confused Invisible
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought he was prepared to confront Andor Drakon. He was approximately over 95%
corrupted when he entered the gate, wearing the trinity, and at C-. I suppose I
must have overlooked something or I was evidently unaware of the specific
requirements to achieve reaching the desired destination. Hmmm. God knows. Maybe
I will know by next time in order to avoid this unexpected and disappointing outcome.
His relatively low score was due to the many turns spent during one event in
particular, which is described later.
BE WARNED; a long and detailed account of the adventure proceeds. To avoid confusion,
I should mention that I refer to my character as "he", and myself as, of course, "I".
Xelajul entered the Drakalor Chain with the clear and determined intent to become a
chaos god.
At the start of Xelajul's adventure, he found a red pool on the second lvl of the
puppy cave, and decided to risk its unpredictable effects. The first few sips were
disappointing, yeilding two groups of red vipers and a poisoning effect. But the
fourth drink produced a marvelous result. "What do you wish for?" suddenly questioned
his mind. "Eternium tower shields." he bellowed. Following a flux of magical energy
flowing around him, he felt his backpack heavier, and upon immediatly checking its
contents, discovered within filled with two of what he had wished for!
Xelajul remained at neutral morale and was planning to remain so in order to reap the
rewards unattainable by those of chaotic alignment, such as the unpredictable gifts of
the mystic dwarf, and the opportunity to save Khelavaster the ancient sage's life. He
had witnessed such prophetic visions all throughout his life, and was no longer shocked
upon eventually seeing them take course before his very eyes, passing with a powerless
sensation of deja-vu like an inevitably fated doom.
He was careful not to venture past the big cave in the CoC, so as not to generate the
Si artifact, so that he could therefore squeeze the most gifts out of his neutral diety
with convenient ease before converting to become a chaos champion, fully aware that
chaotic gifts came with much undesired corruption. He was fortunate to find an altar
on the third lvl of the Caves of Chaos, and eventually became extremely close to the
neutral god. He anxiously prayed to get his gift, but what he carelessly failed to
realize was that he was currently at ideal paragon status, N=. He was shocked, suprised
and disappointed to become a champion of balance (which I beleave should be optional),
and although greatly sadened by his ignorance, was presented with Skullcrusher as his
paragon gift, which made him grin despite the misfortunate accident. Almost immediatly
after his crowning, having sacrificed approximately around 9 more creatures, he
unexpectedly became extremely close to his diety once more, and was crowned with the
Emerald Dagger. One humanoid slayer, felt Xelajul, was much more than generously
sufficent. ;)
Dwarftown was generated on lvl 9, which was a relief to me. He could spend all the time
I wanted in the town without the worry of corruption radiation (which begins at lvl 10,
according to my observations). Xelajul trained with Garth in confidence and to his
leisure, shortly increasing his attributes favorably. Xelajul offered his services to
the ancient dwarf, intending to gain his confidence and win a certain valuable artifact
that he envisioned was in the dwarven leader's possesion. During an exploration
expedition assigned by the ancient dwarf to lead below dwarftown, and beyond the
animated forest, he immediatly halted upon realizing he was within Khelavaster's
vicinity. He was corrupted with the mana battery corruption (which he didnt mind and
was taking advantage of to absorb the power from all of the wands he collected so far
on his adventure that he found useless and had stashed in a corner of the dwarftown
temple specifically in case of such an occasion *WHEW!*), *GASP*, and upon sensing the
figure from a distance, quickly turned his back deciding to momentarily avoid him until
he had procurred the sufficent means that would ressurect the dying sage from the
inevitable destiny that would soon befall him upon confrontation. Later, the ancient
dwarf gave him the quest to find and slay a greater daemon that was terrorizing the
town. Xelajul arrived too late to find it had killed the priest, along with numerous
relatively unimportant villagers, disposing it effortlessly with Skullcrusher in a
berserked frenzy, to ensure quick victory and avoid the horrible attribute-draining
spells of the greater daemons assenal. He was happy to have the altar to himself and
gained the ancient dwarf's prized artifact, adding it to his collection, with the
malignant glutonous demented ratling in mind.
When he deemed himself powerful enough to manage the perilous depths of the Darkforge,
he ventured within and nearly effortlessly dispersed Kherab's humanoid steel guardians,
with great credit to Skullcrusher. He found a suit of acceptable black dragon scale mail,
which he donned immediatly, and the evil Crown of Science, which he intended to give to
the demented ratling. Then, after comfortably clearing the environment of known steel
golems, he took up all his courage, and proceeded to once again risk the unpredictable
and often regretful effects of the pools, in the desperate hopes to obtain a wish. Along
the course, he was granted resistance to paralization, death rays, and given the ability
to see invisible. He was also aged my many years to find himself feeling middle-aged,
and his attributes suffered seldomly from unfortunate weakening effects. But the most
lamentable curse he recieved was that of teleportation, which continued to interfere
with his actions up to his final demise, even though he had control over such a
spontanious and unpredictable intrinsic. He eventually recieved a wish, which yeilded
his desired amulet of life saving (which i beleave should be renamed to "ressurection"
or "renewal"), and feeling he had nothing further to suffer, due to the teleportation
curse, emptied all the remaining pools, which further hacked his being, without
severity. He returned to Khelaster and presented him with his salvation, to which he
was obviously grateful. He promised to be of potential help to Xelajul later, and
disappeared, leaving various gifts of appreciation. Among them and momentarily
unbeknowenst to him, was a wand of wishing, with 1 charge (which he, fortunately due
to taking thoughtful precaution, picked up after immediatly cleansing himself from his
accumulated corruptions with his priceless scrolls). Very pleased with his scrolls,
he left the room, picking up an IDENTICAL wand lying at the door (which he later
discovered to have 2 charges). When he eventually discovered theyre identity (which
was unfortunately AFTER venturing the Tower of Eternal Flames), he zapped the lesser
charged wand to create seven league boots and longbows of hunting, which he used for
wilderness hunting to increase his attributes.
He hadn't been fortunate (as far as he knew) enough to find a mithril ring, so he decided
to brave the ToEF with only several fireproof blankets to protect his equipment. At the
top, he dug through to emerge from the south-western elemental room, and used the nether
bolt spell sparingly to weaken the horde. Emerging from the room seemingly made his
presence immediatly known to the other vile beings, and he was forced to cowardly fire
upon the invading legions with his preciously little known nether bolts. Thanks to his
unpredictable teleportation and control, he managed to teleport to the immediate vicinity
of the chaos wyrm, cowardly struggling to defeat it with seemingly sparcely effective
nether bolts, and then upon realizing their uselessness as he was surrounded by the
legions of corrupting grues and daemons, decided to risk his life in firing a greater
divine touch at the overpowering orb guardian, which although resulted in lowering
Xelajul's HP considerably by half as well as exhausting his entire mana pool,
simultaniously succeeded in gloriously (to my great relief) extinguishing the chaos
wyrm's life force immediatly. The exhausted Xelajul was further fortunate to find that
although surrounded by the perilous onslaught, he was still convieniently able to step
over to the wyrm's previous location to retrieve the possessions left by the wyrm, and
then not a moment too soon, spent a final effort of HP to teleport himself back to the
stairs, where he rested momentarily to recover lost mana. He then set the chaos wyrm's
corpse on the floor and proceeded to try cooking it with hellish flames for greater
preservation so he could get it to Guth Alek, when it was unexpectedly burned to ashes
from the heat of the environment, obviously without giving him the opportunity to
retrieve it after having cooked it. :( On his way down, he found a mithril ring among
his hoarded possesions, and a longbow of hunting! So he quickly put on the ring, and
(carelessly) equiped the bow with the hopes that he would happen across some fire giant
kings on his way to the exit. A few steps later, it burned to cinders. Obviously, the
ring of ice doesnt work as well being uncursed. But to his relief, upon returning to
the dwarftown temple (where i always store my character's possesions), this is when
he discovered the identity of the wands of wishing. So, he was able to recuperate the
meager (but much desired) loss.
He later realized he that he would no longer benefit from his neutral status, as too
many artifacts were already generated to allow for another gift, and was ready to
convert to chaotic in order to progress with his chaos god scheme. So, on a reckless
whim to convert the altar, he attacked a dwarf pedestrian to lure the village
inhabitants into the temple, where he would begin his reign of chaos. Immediatly
the alarm rang all throughout the town, and an armada of muscular dwarfs materialized
before his very eyes. The shopkeeper locked his shop and began in persuit of Xelajul.
He retreated into the temple, then, Xelajul quickly removed and dropped all of his
equipment except for his armor (which would take too long), to avoid its annihilation
in the case of a failed convertion attempt, and cautiously waited to lure an immediate
muscular dwarf onto the altar. He noticed that the armada of muscular dwaves had
dispersed into the town, leaving only a few to confront him. He pondered at this while
luring one onto the altar. It was an unacceptable offering to his deity, and Xelajul
was forced to immediatly retrieve and equip the possessions at his feet to defeat the
opponent. He cautiously approached the entrance, to then be surprised and ambushed by
the lurking Waldenbrook. While simultaniously defending himself from the shopkeeper,
but was too harsh in his defence, and caused the shopkeeper to panic in the temple
corner from bleeding, and soon realizing he would not step over the altar, had to be
executed on the spot. Then he emerged from the temple, to find to his dismay that
the armada of muscular dwarves had almost completely wiped out and annihilated the
town's population! Surprised, he pondered this while proceeding to fall them one,
by one, finding them at individual lengths scattered about the city, until dispersing
them all. The only ones left unharmed and unmolested, were the ancient dwarf, Garth
the trainer, and the demented ratling. He left dwarftown to ascend to the altar on
the third level, which he intended to convert chaotic by sacrificing a neutral being.
He hadnt planned to convert yet, and had just finished consuming an undead corpse when
he was unintentionally converted to chaotic, apparently abandoning his deity, and in
thus immediatly un-crowned and attacked by his fury with a fatal elemental bolt, to
which he gratefully found himself immune. The outraged god, upon seeing his failed
attack, vowed revenge and summoned a legion of wraiths to Xelajul's vicinity. Much
obliged, he gradually dispersed them with the longbow of hunting, then cooked them
and had a great feast, to his former allied diety, and toasting to his fallen
champion status.
At this point Xelajul proceeded to give the demented ratling the 6 artifacts he wished,
from the pile he had collected thus far. He gobbled them up in his traditional
nightmarish fashion, and directed Xelajul towards the ancient stone circle for a
crutial part of the trininity he desired. Yet after failing continuous attempts at
entry, he decided to postpone the location for later, assuming it temporarily
unaccessable for him. Later he realized the meaning within the demented ratling's
riddle, only after having asked too much and forced to kill the impatient fool,
and successfully entered during the 1rst day of the month, before which biding
his time waiting for the precise moment by hunting in the nearby mountains for
favorable prey.
Xelajul was my first character to manage entering the ancient stone circle. I found
it unexpectedly sparcely guarded, with merely 2 chaos knights at the entrance, as
well as a few WMoPC at other points. Within the building it was a completely empty
architecture, with only the multi-headed chaos dragon standing within, along with
a few lesser chaos beings. Unaware of its capacity, Xelajul began firing arrows at
the monstrosity from a direct path, soon realizing by its dangerous corrupting
breath that to manuever in a more strategic formation would be wiser. He realized
it wasnt as weak as he suspected (never underestimate an opponent), and after
stepping a few paces to his right and out of the dragon's direct line of fire,
proceeded to nail him with arrows of dragon slaying, periodically side-stepping
to avoid its line of fire. It fell from approximately 5 hits, and died quickly.
After recovering its possesion (the Crown of Chaos) he concluded searching the
vicinity, and found a golden pool in a south-east corner. Xelajul declined
tempting fate and then exited the empty scene, never to look back again.
As for the other two parts of the chaos trinity, collecting the requests for Gaab
Baay was easy, and retrieving the chaos sceptre was a race against time. In
Terinyo, since I was aware that none of the inhabitants, besides the sherrif,
can get close to the edges of town (to prevent theyre rapture), Xelajul teleported
a farmer, who immediatly ended up stuck in the upper edge boundry, where he was then
powerlessly lured away, and slayed in the wilderness with a bow of hunting. Since I
always save my character's scrolls and other potentially useful findings in the
village temple, he brought her a scroll of danger shortly. The wild boar skull was
simply a matter of circumstance. And I had plenty scrolls of chaos resistance to
spare. So when she was satisfied, she handed the amulet and vanished into thin air,
departing with a cryptic message. Xelajul then proceeded to execute diving into the
infinite dungeon as quickly as possible, casting magic map/knowledge of the ancients
at each landing and teleporting to the next flight of stairs whenever possible, trying
to avoid as much of the chaos radiation as he could (which i found begins at lvl 10 in
the infinite dungeon, identically to the CoC). When he reached the lair of MaLaKaI, he
spotted a dwarven chaos knight and mistook it for the guardian. I wished to discover
the guardian's creature quote, so Xelajul cast calm monster on it and i wrote down the
quote. After dispersing the subject uncannily quick, Xelajul discovered it was merely
a simple dwarven chaos knight, and wearily continued the search with caution. Meeting
the opponent in a barren north-west room, either he seemed not to care about Xelajul's
presence, or wasnt aware. He was backstabbed and fallen in a much similar fashion to
his mistaken convoy, and after bagging the corrupting scepter, Xelajul struggled ever
more frantically to emerge from the infinite depths as quickly as possible, for
artifacts that contain the essence of chaos and corruption corrupt the carrier by its
mere possesion.
His further voyage into the caverns of chaos was relatively uneventful, the orbs were
collected quite effortlessly with less trouble than ussual, noticing only two red
dragon vaults found on the way down, one of which yeilded the scorched spear, I
beleave. Meaningless to Xelajul, of course. Having cleared the path and obtained
the trinity, he felt prepared to proceed in recovering the Trident of the Red Rooster.
He did the karmic wyrm's bidding, and obtained Sting (and then killed the employer
effortlessly with greater divine touch/death ray). He then carried it to the assassin
prince, who merely replied that he had no work for him, yet. I realized that he had
not yet achieved enough experience to obtain the quest. So, bieng at XP lvl 40, I
deduced that the best place to advance his experience, would be in the caverns of the
blue dragons. So twas there that he rose to XP lvl 45 while finding various artifacts
left by the dragons (including the ring of immunity), and finally became recognized by
the assassin prince. Immedietly following his employment, Xelajul murdered the assassin
prince, knowing he was of no further use to him, and to unite the lethal dagger
combination of Needle and Sting. Remembering his first kill, he found Filk on lvl 45
of the infinite dungeon. Death came as swift to Filk as it was for the karmic wyrm, and
understandably, from the same measure. The Mad Minstrel was very pleased, and so
revealed the location of the crumpled scroll, where Xelajul's runed club succeeded where
the twin daggers failed, halting the emperor moloch's existance and gaining the prize of
the crumpled scroll. Xelajul was ecstatic with his victory, until he realized one thing
after reading a scroll of balance; he was of the utter limits of chaotic nature...
Which caused ME to ponder the following predicament:
In various parts of the game, certain priveliges and prizes are unattainable for a
chaotic character. Such as, for example, Rolf's Companion and saving Khelavaster's
life. But in order to get the Trident of the Red Rooster, which is required to achieve
the ultra chaotic ending, one must give the crumpled scroll to the ressurected Khelavastar
who eventually appears in Terinyo (when your character reaches lvl 30 after you have saved
his life). I was VERY reluctant to risk the possibility of loosing the opportunity to
obtain the TotRR by giving Khelavaster the scroll while being of chaotic moral, which I
suspected might have yielded in Khelavasters denial and failure to return it to me, so that
I couldnt proceed to change alignment as required and attempt once more. My intended plans
were to play it safe by converting to neutral, and THEN give him the scroll, which I was
positive would yield me the trident (little did I know..). But an EVIL MIND THRULL popped
into my weak mind through its lowered defences...
I've never saved file cheated before, and had never found out how. But I got an idea about
how to do it. I decided to try it out, merely to verify its effectiveness. I copied the
entire ADOM directory to another location of the hard drive (the desktop), and the result
was indeed successful. But then the MIND THRULL took over, and instigated me to take
advantage of the situation and try giving the scroll to the ghost librarian, who is rumored
to be the source of a mysterious "wierd tome" quest speculated around the ADOM newsgroup.
I wondered what would happen if one was to give him the crumpled scroll. Since its known
that by giving him regular scrolls and books makes him happy and is considered a lawful act,
it seemed logical that giving him such a valuable item might produce favorably results. So
I used the clone to reach the librarian, and gave him the scroll, merely to recieve a
disapointing message identical to the results of giving him any other book or scroll,
which is "Thank you for bringing this back to me, i missed it." Well, so much for that
idea. But the clone violation didnt end here for me. My character was at the complete
limit of chaos, which is C- and with 10,000 black stones on his side of the balance scale
(if you read a scroll of balance), and the limit of law is 4000 stones (if i recall
correctly), which means that as you can imagine it takes an EXTREMELY long time to convert
back to neutral, much less lawful, from such dark morale (this is the method I eventually
resulted in proceeding, which explains the low score). So I was tempted (and succumbed) to
give it to Khelavaster at the current morale of my character, just to verify if it was
indeed nessessary to go through so much time and effort to get the trident. He takes the
scroll, looks at you with sad eyes, and says something along the lines of "This is not for
you." and drops it on the floor. Off topic here for a moment, this was unexpected to me. I
think that since the trident is a lawful artifact, Khelavaster should keep its summoning
scroll and not give it back to a chaotic character, and disapear. But anyway, now I knew
and satisfied, I cast the clone into oblivion (bye-bye thrully!) and deleted the cloned
ADOM directory.
But guilt was left where the mind thrull had sat. I wondered if I could honestly consider
the victory (if it would have been acheived) to be a valid win? I save file cheated through
clonation of the ADOM file, purely with the intent of experimentational purposes. It was
confirmed that as I had originally intended, planned and was in the process of executing,
that I indeed had to convert in order to obtain the trident. Despite of this, doubt, the
blackened remains of the mind thrull, remained encrusted upon my brow, causing much grief
as i examined the situation. I eventually concluded that the results were harmless and
irrelevent, since I ended up doing what i had originally intended, regardless. Thus, the
manipulation was meaningless. The win, would have been valid.
I had to spent approximately 1 day of real time to convert Xelajul from the very ends of C-,
to the minimum of NC. Needless to say, all of the further time and effort he spent in
collecting grand heaps of stomachfilia herbs while wearing an amulet of law, and giving them
to the beggars of the outlaw village, he finally reached L- after approximately one entire
real-day of my effort. Yet, despairingly, Khelavaster still denied producing him the Trident
of the Red Rooster, insisting further that it was not made for him, despite the apparent and
evident time-consuming and painful efforts he had strived to make. At that moment, Xelajul's
patience had reached its ends. He could not restrain the terrible anger and horrible fury
erupting from within, which he immediatly began unleashining upon the ungrateful ancient
sage, followed by every remaining villager of the small town, only to find his anger
excalating... He then ran to the outlaw village and extinguished the shopkeeper as well as
the small, puny army that appeared immediatly as a result, and still quenching his seemingly
unproportionate rage, ended the lives of the old barbarian, mad minstrel, and the remaining
inhabitants of dwarftown, the ancient dwarf and Garth. Still enfuriated in dispair, he
gathered forth all his valuable equipment and vowed furious unyielding vengance upon the
vision of his desires, Andor Drakon.
Looking back in retrospect, and with regards to the previous occasion of having aquired the
Trident of the Red Rooster with another character, Orion, i now reach the conclusion that
one must be at either L or L+ to achieve producing the TotRR from Khelavastars hands (more
probably the later).
To end the story, all his foes fell without ever even scathing him before the chaos gate,
including the weak Fistanarious, and he used the wands of wishing's last charges to produce
a paranoingly abundant supply of scrolls of chaos resistance, for which he intended to
cleanse himself completely upon arrival at Andor's palace, and some scrolls of dark
predictions, to meter his corruptions, and then entered the gate bearing the chaos trinity.
Writhing tentacles allowed him to pass, and after drifting through space, came to an eternal
chaos knight, who abruptly bellowed: "YoU aRe NoT mY lOrD!", and effortlessly cleaved the
helpless Xelajul in half.
