Can you sacrifice the orb guardians, and if you can, do they leave the orbs?

how would you sacrifice them exactly? I'd imagine that it would be impossible to sacrifice one without its leaving an orb.

Im 95% sure you can sacrifice the guardians, but they scoot there way around the altars like the Hill Orcs do.

Oh, and dont forget youll be drawn towards the altars alignment unless your a crowned champion.

And yes, sacrificed monsters always leave their items.

About 2 adom versions ago i sacced the ancient chaos wyrm, not on the chaos altar at the top of the ToEF, but on the Lawful altar i had luckily found on the previous level, so it is possible to sac the guardians, but you wont get nearly as much exp for them.

Wait till they are walking over an Altar you can see, and press Shift-O

Thats the letter O, not a zero.

Its a good idea to make sure the Altar is the same alignment as you though

Well, first, it IS a good idea to make sure you know what alignment the altar is. If it is the same as you, then even heroes with low piety can sacrifice quite happily. The only exception seems to be chaotic heroes with chaotic altars trying to sacrifice chaotic creatures more powerful than themselves (ie orb guardians)

The two general rules are:

1) Never, EVER, sacrifice a creature that it is either of your alignment or the alignment of the altar.

2) If you must use an altar that is not of your alignment, have a high piety level.

Chaotics can sacrifice chaotics with no penalty, chaotic gods don't care. Orcs, goblins and basically every monster who can speak will also sacrifice you whenever they get the chance.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Not only chaotic NPC will do that - imagine my precrowned/going for a second precrowning char getting sacrificed by a barbarian (neutral), because I mistook it for a berzerker(chaotic) and stood on a neutral altar...
Ratlings, barbarian/-leaders, cavemen - those neutral NPC can speak and kill you in one of the most annoying ways.

Lawful chars also can sacrifice you if hostile, so beware of those postal dwarves ;P

Other than the "know alignment" spell, how exactly are you supposed to know the alignment of the monsters? I always find it easier to play chaotic characters, 'cuz then I can sacrifice pretty much anything that's alive. But when I'm N- or higher, I have a heckuva time trying to figure out who I can and can't sac.

I reckon being lawful is better. Lawful monsters are fairly rare and easily recognised, plus you don't have to be so careful not to step on the altar you're using.

The Paladin's special ability is other way. Then it is easy most animals are neutral, goblins, orcs, trolls etc chaotic. Dwarves, blink dogs beggars are lawful.

Ah, so you can't sac orb guardians. Good to know.

Unless, perhaps, you converted the altar to L/N first? Of course that would be hard to do with the orb guardian still around to sac you at the first opportunity; and you'd have to be a crowned champion of course.

Mabey you need to sac it on an altar which is on a different level, ie not one of the chaos altars that the guardian hangs around.

Yeah It was a neutral altar that was one lvl up. You people never give up on cheesy ways do you?
(The snakes not even that hard, the only one that gives me probs is the mana orb guardian)
Though it sounds as if you get a different Msg depending on the align of the altar.

95% of the time it's easy to guess what alignment a monster is, so you don't really need Know Alignment or the paladin power or the guidebook very badly. There are some messed up mosters, though... grey slayers are chaotic but according to monster memory are "fighters of balance".

Does anyone know if it's possible to smash the elemental altars (by kicking them, or by leading a moloch to them) If so what happens?

You probally can smash them, but IIRC if you convert all of the elemental altars you'll get a wand of wishing when you face Andor (obviously only helpful if your going for an Ultra)

By the way, you can also sacrifice yourself, by dropping all your stuff and then trying to sacrifice something.

It's not even possible to strangle yourself...

And your god should attempt to stop you from doing things that displease him.
