Hi all

My name is Greg. I've played ADOM for close to a decade and I like to think of myself as something of an ADOM guru. I've done just about everything in ADOM including several, legit (i.e., non scum-saving) ultra endings.

I've enjoyed playing ADOM a helluva lot and I know that it is a very challenging game. I would like to share my experience with anyone who would like it - sort of as an ADOM mentor.

If you are interested, please contact me at gtaylor24@hotmail.com (or on this forum). I am happy to answer any questions - but please be patient: I will probably only reply within a day or two. Also, please check the guidebook before you contact me - it is a great source of help and you may find the answer that you are looking for there!

What did I say about getting a free laugh every time I came here? Hi greg! There are probably people on here who could really use the help though.

How often do you pray?

Thing is, in the begining, I sometimes try to kill that last goblin with only 3 HP rather than praying. Figuring that saving piety would be better in the long run. (This is assuming I can't run away).

Do you ever do this? Or do you take a 'pray if it's even a little risky or it might be unheard' attitude?

Also, what tactics do you normally use? Before, I always set it to Berzerk, relying on PV to get me through (which often worked, paralyzation, water, traps tended to kill me). Now I've switched to normal tactics so I can build shild skill as I fight.

So, what tactics setting do you generally use? (I know that against high PV things, or Karmics if you don't have ranged weapons, then you'll probably use Berzerk).

1 final question. I've been playing Troll Wizards lately and have been quite happy. Wouldn't slower lvl progression of a troll be an inherent advantage? Slower lvl's would me that at level 13 - 17 (when you can go to the pyramid) you'd have much more game time in. Higher weapon skills, higher shild skills, more higher quality items, more intrinsics, higher piety with god, etc.. compared to a human who got to level 13 in half the time.

Well, there's my 3 questions.

At low levels, when in doubt pray. First coaligned altar you find you can get that piety back with just ~1000 gold.
Tactics, with melee characters I default to agressive, non-melee I use defensive. If I'm trying to get somewhere without killing stuff I use coward. That's pretty much it.
About trolls, not sure. If the level requirement for the pyramid works the same way as for Kranach, then a troll would actually have to enter a lot lower level than 17 (about 10 I'd guess) If it's not, then you're right, that would be an advantage, albeit only for one or two sections of the game.

tactics
against a new opponent you're not sure you can defeat, go coward or normal and hit it a few times first. if you don't deal any damage, switch to berserk, if you're taking damage on coward, run, if it's going well, stay on normal.

when using ranged weapons, use berserk tactics and switch to normal when the enemy is in melee range.

I use berserk when using ranged weapons, otherwise I usually default to very aggressive. With very aggressive you'll have low DV, which means that a bigger part of your DV comes from your shield, which equals to more shield skill marks. When I get my shield skill as high as my shield's DV is (as in it won't improve anymore) I use defensive mostly, so that I take less damage but still gain weapon marks. Still, my tactics vary depending on what I'm fighting, like if I'm fighting ghuls I go more defensive to avoid their paralyzation attacks etc.

I don't pray much. I prefer retreating to a previous level and healing up that way.

One other thing about ranged weapons: you gain weapon marks for ranged weapons even when you're on coward, this is not the case with melee weapons.

If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

Dwarf: I have a level 50 gnome wizard savegame - right at the end of the game just before entering the Chaos Gate to take on Andor Drakon. I also have a level 30-something Troll Necromancer savegame - just after getting the Elemental Orb of Earth. Email me if you want them.

Praying: If I can't retreat or heal then I always pray.

Tactics: I nearly always stick with Cowardly until I enter combat - then I switch to Normal if in melee or Bezerk if using ranged combat. I once had a level 50 gnome wizard with Needle, Sting, Robes of Resistance, etc., etc., etc. I thought I was unstoppable and charged around permanently beserk. Then I bumped into a mimic hivemind. With the low DV that being berserk produces, the mimic hivemind was able to hit me easily and keep me paralysed. It took me 5 min. of holding down the spacebar to watch my 1000 or so hitpoints be depleted in decrements of 10 or so. Ever since then I have always played cautiously!

Trolls: Slow levelling up has its advantages and disadvantages. Advantages include haviing better-than-normal equipment when entering early game locations (like the pyramid). Disadvantages include not being as well developed as non-Trolls during the late game (e.g., when taking on Nuurag-Vaarn).

I usually only pray for precrowning and crowning. If I have to pray for other things, I figure this guy won't make it in the long run anyway. And prayer doesn't even help you with some early things anyway, such as 20 damage every few turns from a few suicide bees. (Prayer doesn't cure poison, does it?)

I usually only have to make these prayer or not prayer decisions with wizard types, and with those you end up taking about the same damage no matter what tactic you use (until you get armor with more PV.) So a good way to make sure you kill those monsters when you need to, is to go true berserking! You should all try true berserking with a low level wizard. You'll love it.

See that? I linked the two topics.

Geeze morio just relax. I don't think that someone else cheating in a single player game could possibly affect your enjoyment of the game, and if it does well that is probably a sign you take ADOM too seriously. Shouting at someone like that however is more likely to detract from their ability to enjoy the game and the forum. Get on a search engine and look for ADOMbot if you really want to cheat anonymous, but the game is much better if you don't, I know firsthand...
Tell me how to get stronger....

I apologise for shouting at you Annonymous but I really think that cheat codes would destroy the fun with the game, and that's the reason why I don't advice anyone to cheat in any way.
TB made the game hard for a reason. I don't think that there would be so many of us at this forum if the game was too easy.
