What does a si look like? Is there any description of it in the game? -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. (Hey, at least I saved that little girl's dog. Gimme some credit... ;-)) |

Nope, it's all up to your imagination to figure out how the si looks like. Locke Cole |

the Si is badly misrepresented in the game (although it doesn't really matter...). it is a real object, and no, it does *not* reproduce itself. here's a (sort of) description of what it looks like: ok. Ninja Turtles. Leonardo has machetes, Michalangelo (IIRC) has numchucks, Donnatello has a bo, and the other one has Sis. yep, there those three-pronged knife-like things with no edges, jsut spikes. normally they're double wielded. they're used in lots of martial arts forms. |

ADOM's Si, has nothing to do with Sis in the real world... I seem to be quoting the newsgroup a lot lately... anyway: --- From: Thomas Biskup <rpg@saranxis.ruhr.de> Subject: Re: Si's Date: 1998/02/11 Message-ID: <Eo8KyA.7A@saranxis.ruhr.de>#1/1 Sender: rpg@saranxis.ruhr.de (Thomas Biskup) References: <6blpds$sql@dfw-ixnews8.ix.netcom.com> <887106913.1147.0.nnrp-07.9e986529@news.demon.co.uk> <34E09BC6.1DBC@cnx.net> Organization: Private Linux Site Newsgroups: rec.games.roguelike.adom Farnell Family <critters@cnx.net> wrote: > Andy Rogers wrote: > > how about telling us what they are !! > an artifact > strange item=si > hey thomas, did you write that part after 12 or something? No, actually Sis are a memento to an ancient AD&D campaign I once was part of. There wer two dwarves (both fighter/thieves and great friends) named Gorko Galgenstrick and Groron Garman who participated in many adventures and one day Groron (played by a friend of mine) suddenly noticed on his item list an item called 'si'. We had no idea what that was to mean or how it got there but made some jokes about this strange and wonderful artifact and my friend decided to leave that 'word' on the character sheet. A couple of months later -- when I was studying his character sheet -- I suddenly noticed a second 'si' in a different corner of the character sheet. We figured that it must be some strange multiplying artifact and left it on the sheet. The rest is history, so to speak :-> -- Thomas Biskup ADOM maintainer >=====------------=====< ADOM 0.9.9 Gamma 8 available now! Official ADOM webpage available at http://users.aol.com/ADOMDev/index.html--- I don't think Dukes Sis have anything to do with the Si in ADOM, and I don't think even Thomas know what it would look like :) Jan Erik Mydland HoF admin |

No, Duke, the weapon you are thinking of is a SAI not a SI. SI, btw, is an acronym for Strange Item. [Edited at 18:21, Wednesday, December 05, 2001 by Gyr] |

if you insist, Gyr... but notice that "si" isn't capitolized. if it was, then i'd be more likely to believe taht si was an acronym for strange item... IMO that whole thing (SI stands for Strange Item) is just a roumor somebody came up with. then again i don't know a lot about the game (never beaten it, furthest i've ever even gotten was to the water temple)... |

Thomas has said that it doesn't stand for Strange Item. See the above post about the mysterious object that appeared on his friend's inventory list during a D&D game and how it appeared to be reproducing. -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. Hmm, I do not, apparently, have access to the entire newsgroup thread. The quote begins with "No, actually Sis..", but does not give a reference to what exactly it is refuting. The story about the AD&D game does not, in and of itself, mean that si is NOT an acronym for strange item. Or has Thomas stated this somewhere else? Anyways, the weapon in question IS called a sai. PS: This all make sense? |

Yup SAI is a martial arts weapon.SI (pronounced see) is somethin in adom. These is completley off the topic but what is AD&D? |

Madman, Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. It's a pen and paper RPG. Picture ADOM but played by a group of people reading out of a book, writing out their stats by hand and using dice for an RNG. I don't really know too much about it because I've never played it. I want to but I'm the only person I know who likes RPGs. :-( -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. You live anywhere near Philly? My parents probably won't let me meet someone I've met on the internet (heck, they'd have a fit if they knew I was saying I live near Philly on the internet. "ANYONE could be reading that, Amanda, ANYONE. How do you know Duke Ravage isn't a stalker? Can you PROVE he's not a stalker?" arrrgh...), but maybe I can convince them. damnit!!!! oh well. but i understand, all that crap about the parents and internet security... i have a friend who's parents for a long time wouldn't even let her get an instant message device for that same reason. hey i got an idea. do you two have ICQ? mebe when i getmy comp back we could do AD&D over teh net or something. ivan.sourceforge.net |

Amanda Sedai Registered user Last page view: 8134 days, 1 hour, 23 minutes and 14 seconds ago. |
That would be cool! I don't have ICQ right now but I can download it (I used to have it, so I'll probably remember how to use it). I also have AIM (I'm AmandaSedai, but if you IM me be warned that I'm too lazy to use away messages. If you IM me chances are I won't respond because I'm at class or something. And the only person I really talk to on it is my mom, so if you IM me don't be surprised if I reply with "Hi, Mommy!" or something). -Amanda Sedai, a save-scumming newbie. There's a lot of instant messaging programs out there. I've found that MSN Messenger is alot better than any other programs I've found so far, and both of you (I'm talking to Amanda and Duke, if anyone hasn't figured that out yet) have a hotmail account, which is all you need to use MSN. Just go to MSN.com and download the latest version, and add the other contacts in by E-mail address. The downside is it will only work when we're all online, and I have a pretty rigid time when I go online. But hey, if you guys want to try it, I'm all for it. --- Hicpotboy ------ Hicpotboy --------- Less twitch, more mental itch - saying by me. |

i have the MSN IM, also have AIM (guardsheep2000) and ICQ (IIRC 113336898, should be Firestorm [old s/n from another forum; that forum was why i d/led ICQ in the first place]). just don't expect me on until at *least* the end of the semester, til then i have no computer. might not even have one then. ivan.sourceforge.net |

I assume "ThrNec" is short for Thread Necromancer. Very clever. This spooked me as I read it, because I actually live near Plum Coulee. It's a small town in southern Manitoba. I wonder who HicPotboy is. Or was. |

What I wonder about is how the "si" ever got onto that character sheet. If it's a pen&paper game, there can't be a computer error involved. So someone must have written it on there... but why? Edit: For the record, I have ICQ (282026638), AIM (RealArancaytar), MSN (arancaytar@yahoo.com) and Yahoo (arancaytar). Sadly I can no longer use IRC with my connection now. Move the cursor to the desired position and press [SPACE] when done. Impossible. Suddenly you stand elsewhere. You see an ancient altar of black obsidian. The goblin rockthrower suddenly shouts a prayer to his gods! You are consumed by a roaring column of flame! [Edited 1 time, last edit on 1/7/2005 at 21:13 (GMT -5) by Arancaytar] |

Heh. Mabye it actually stood for "Strange Item" on that player's character sheet? And I, too, have ICQ (52357323) and Yahoo (vexander77). Heh, if you've ever played a p&p game, character sheets get covered with LOTS of weird stuff, mainly cause you never know what's going to be important later so you write down pretty much everything. Often even after only a couple of sessions I look at some of my notes and think "huh? wtf does that mean . . ." What do you wish for? wands of cat repellent_ |

I've personally always thought that it must have been a part of a larger word in the inventory list, such as "sinister axe" or whatever, and then at some point the item was lost and it was rubbed out (supposing it had indeed been written in pencil, which it probably was as it's a pain to play p&p with a pen)... only it wasn't totally rubbed out and the letters "si" still remained, at least partially visible. My theory, at least. |

Back in no doubt similar AD&D days, a player failed to turn up to a game and we were all very puzzled to discover his equipment included "Sopope". It turned out to be "50' rope". Bad hand writing. Or laziness. Or somesuch. The kobold cringes in pain |

Once when playing one of those book RPGs, I found a bag and wrote that it had an item (don't know what), and it also said there was sand in the bag... and I wrote it down too... I dunno, maybe it could be magical sand! |

Well since they definintely played in german I am sure it was no "sinister axe" A few months ago a friend of mine and I discoverd 10 year old Character Sheets... We had a great evening trying to figure out who each player was and what they could have meant by noting x,y or z. So Sis are really common in p&p. :) |
