The "slavering grue" awaiting in the darkness was "borrowed" from the Infocom Zork games.
And you can meet one only when doomed (iirc).

"died of exhaustion on a bad day"

This one makes me laugh... Imagine dying without ever even getting one turn. I'm assuming this is the message for dying from the hp loss on mondays. But you'd need to start with only 5 max hp or something... I've started with 7/11 hp but never anything lower. Has anybody had this one happen to them?

It can happen if you save the game, and then reload on a monday. Though i do not think you can have that happen to you more than once on the same day

I died trying to be a too good writer.

Was trying to create scroll of chaos resistance. Why did this happen?

Writing scrolls drain some hitpoints IIRC. The harder the scroll the more drained and SoCR is the hardest there is (IIRC).

Scrolls of education and chaos resistance are the hardest to write. Unless you're a wizard(and quite high level) trying to write them might kill you.

If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

My friend once was waiting for his birthday, was confronted by a Ghost, hit a couple of times and got the following message:
