I actually played a trollish necromancer a few times...I didn't worry overmuch about spell power, but focused more on creating undead minions. That way, I could bash stuff with ease, and then send in my undead to kill things like cats, since that RotMC is too good to pass up. Only bad thing there is that corpses are sometimes used for undead instead of food...and trolls get hungry quick, of course.

I feel I need to point out that Candle + Healer is 9/10s of the equation; adding troll barely helps at all. Once a candle-born healer is past level 12, it's guaranteed to heal 4 points every 12 turns. A troll will hit the natural healing more often, this is true, but once you find and drink a few blessed potions of troll blood, anyone else can easily catch up and indeed surpass a troll's rate. (To get the exact info {obviously very spoily} -- http://adom.falldowngoboom.org/regen.html )

I liked trolls when I first started playing, because they have great survivability in the early game (my first character that even made it to the CoC was a troll). However, once you're past the very early game, trolls have only disadvantages; other races can get your strength and toughness up to at least a decent amount with corpses, herbs, etc. (Maybe to, say, 25-28 instead of a troll's normal 30-35, but good enough). Trolls specifically have a harder time learning spells than anything else, they take a lot longer time to level up, AND they need to eat so much more.

It's just a preference issue still of course: Trolls survive the early game very well but suck by the middle/endgame. Other races fit in various places on this line. Trolls are a good race to start with and learn the game, but after than I personally think they are just a pain to play.

Personally, if you want invincibility, play a Dark Elven Assasin using throwing daggers. If you want to challenge yourself, the most fragile Race/Class combo I can think of is Dark Elven Necromancers.
Should I eat it or make it my undead slave?

I think that Gnomes are pretty awesome race..
I ecspecially like playing with gnomish melee characters, but spellcasters are fine too
One hundred warriors of Lucifer, they brought the fire with them
And they made storm of fire, that blew over paradise
And behold, one hundred and six, monsters from the inferno
They brought the nuclear destruction, that devastated The Holy Realm

There are many that I haven't tried yet, but if I gain that one free talent @ character creation,I like to take gnome barbarian. Getting the talent "Heir" brings in a nice weapon which will help much in the beginning... Obviously isn't the best but I like it :)

I like mincrafters, merchants, and elementalists. Usualy elves, occationaly drakelings. Elves for dex, very handy for early and frail PCs, and drakelings for toughness and alertness. And merchants can kill just about anything will coins. Even Mario...

Had a human priest (I think, may have been gray elf, I'm a bit fuzzy on the details now), way back in gamma 10 or some such. Super buff, had all the orbs that existed in that version and had just reched level 48 of the COC. Then the computer crashed :(

i have had many characters all getting to 25 and then i've just left them. but the best char i have had is a grey elven wizard, up until level 13 it was a bit of a struggle but the moment he got good weapons and armor, nothing is too much for him!

i like wizards a lot, but they start to be boring after making several winners... (won the game 3 times - two wizards, one priest. also killed two high level (30-40) wizards that were going to win... one died from the mana orb [miscalculation;], the second - from a girdle of giant strength (removed a girdle of greed accidentally while carrying tons of gold;)). the wizard class seems to be the best after level 10-15.

i like the (female) gray elven assassin combination too - since assassins start with a great set of skills (after adding healing, pickpockets, courage and all the stuff from bart it becomes almost ultimate;) plus a nice weaponry (plus poison), and as fast as i get my St to 18, all my stats except Wi and To are very good. and Wi and To are just a matter of morgia root (no herbalism is bad, but it can be dealt with by many means, for example a blessed scroll of uncursing).

Hehe...I love female grey elven assassins ^^
Just finished the game with one today, then got bored and slaughtered everyone in HMV, Terinyo, Dwarftown, and Law-blah-bleh-random-crap. Then I got bored of that and killed arena master, ghost librarian, casino staff, Sharad-Waador, and pretty much all the other unique NPCs. Haha...then even that got boring -_-'
Now I'm randomly wandering the ID (currently I105). What's the farthest anyone has gotten without cheating?

I'm still alive, but I could have had an easier time by avoiding them all...

Not sure about monster stats...never bothered to check. Almost everything dies in 1 attack anyway. Everything else just needs 2 attacks.

the current I level is stored in some kind of variable, most probably 2-byte (0-about 65000). if you reach the maximum level (~65000) and try to descend, you are instead moved to some strange place like I0 (probably) or maybe I1, or maybe the game crashes:).

oh well, gotta go home:|. till next OT post:D.

its technically impossible to get anywhere near 65000. Im not sure if the level limit is by some 8 byte integer or what, but levels around 1200 already get pretty ridiculous.

Its not only killing more monsters that make them tougher, but the danger level increases with depth.

I imagine that around I:3000 or so, common monsters like rats and goblins would have several thousand hp and be able to kill a PC in 2 or 3 hits.

I wouldnt know, never really took much interest in ID dives myself.

The monsters will get harder as I go deeper, but it could have been somewhat easier if I wasn't slaying them all for fun >.<

I know there's gonna be a point where even the lowly rats and goblins become significantly dangerous, but I'm planning to either run past them with invisibility and coward tactics or teleport the heck away from everything.

that a good idea - teleportation charges don't end, because you still find more and more books;) but remember that a level 110 greater moloch might pop up at any time..

Playing a Dark Elven Priest I drank from a pool on PC:1, and suddenly.....

WHAT DO YOU WISH FOR?:_

%)

6 SoCR are mine!
All is left is to get rid of C alignment, and manage to survive till CoC.

Besides that, about a best char:
My one is a Drakish Wizard, my first, and by now onliest successfull normal ending. Bad side - ridiculously low mana - managed to get it to 35 after drinking all blessed potions of (potential)Mana I've found. Killed Cat Lord, accidently sacced "The Protector", but, on the other side, dragged all orb guardian corpses to druid in Terinyo for expertise and learned Wish, despite being unable to cast it. Finished the game with 13 SoCR's, and corruption-free, after killing black unicorn.

Think that Drakelings rule despite scary freezing effects. They are sole race who can use food overflow effectively. + That starting Alertness and Food Preservation make wonders. Problem with speed 10 after D:49 was quickly solved by self-ignition via wand of fire, which didn't hurt a lot because of the RoI (crowning gift).
And class – wizards, of course. Creating a SoCR for 2 mana, which are regained after several castings of “create item” is just marvelous! Scrolls of education, in addition, are fully free of charge (except uses of writing sets).
And again, casting that +40 Frost Bolt against a bunch of Ancient Red Dragons led by a Wyrm is MUCH more effective then slicing them, even if player manages to kill one per turn.

Ubi patria ibi bene!

d666- Why can't I just teleport or run away from the moloch?

Nchurmdaz- Wow...6 SoCR from one wish? I usually get only 3.
A +40 Frost Bolt might be more effective, but slashing the dragons to bits is so much more fun ^^
Actually, best tactic is to run away and not have them level up.

nchurmdaz means, he wished for an aols and is gonna waste it on kevlar_waster. this will give him 6 scrolls instead of the regular wished-for amount of 3. this is basic guidebook knowledge...

and about the moloch - you won't flee from one (especially a 110lv moloch) because the temptation of getting even MORE experience (which means more points in the final score) will drive you into a mad berserk charge.

that's not kinda clear. an adom character NOT feeling any sort of lust for experience points and still living on?... can't believe this at all.
