What is the true purpose behind the Appraising Skill? I have had very good (as defined by the skill) items fetch a lower price in shops than the same type type of item rated poor or fair. Also have had good and great rated items with a status of cursed. Any clues?

The description is a guess, so it's not always right. It one of those almost-useless skills out there. The only use is to tell a newbie what items are good and what items are not. It's not supposed to tell you which item of the same type is better. It's rather to tell you that a ring of doom is a bad thing, and a ring of djinni summoning is a good thing.

An optimist sees a light at the end of that tunnel.
A realist sees a train.
And the train driver sees three idiots on the tracks.

I dunno... wearing a ring of doom in the wilderness is quite useful. :) I've killed and cooked enough *foo*s to get crowned before (hurthling).

I prefer hunting for *foo*s in the Big Room. It's not far from an altar in DT, and combined with Strenght of Atlas you can pick/cook/sacc a LOT of cooked *foo* corpses :).
