Nope... but they might as well be able to, because once you have a hammer, a forge, a weapon, and some ingots (or pieces of ore, which have to be turned into ingots first) you can pretty much make the weapon of your dreams. if your Smithing skill is decent, that is.

But you have to find a basic weapon first, you can't make a weapon straight from an ingot

Isn't Smithing a bit overrated anyway? I don't know, I mostly play spellcasters, mainly Priests (for Detect Item Status) but since you can't forge anything like the dwarven mace (whatever it's called, it's my favourite weapon)...just seems a bit ...i don't know, boring

I like the smithing ability, but I only use when I actually play Weaponsmiths, just because they are the only ones I'm able to get the skill level to 100 in any reasonable amount of time (The skill only seems to of use when it gets into the 90+ range, otherwise it's just a waste of ingots). Any other characters already have good weapons/armor (artifact or otherwise) by the time I have the skill high enough, have obtained an anvil, etc.
It would be nice if they could actually make weapons or armor, instead of just improving existing items. Would make the skill *alot* more interesting, IMHO.

I think there should be a forge and a altar in Terrinyo when u start becuase they only appear randomly in dungeons and the only garanteed one i know of are in Dwarftown but that takes too long to get to.

The dungeon that leads to HMV has a bit higher chance to generate forges (almost every time in some of the levels for mee :)

Bad thing is to get through that legendary 1st lvl.. after that it's easier. Door traps are also abundant in there..

While you're at it, why not have Khelly appear when you enter Terinyo for the first time and hand you the TotRR? Not everything should be that easy you know.

And most of the time you'll find plenty of altars and forges. Sometimes you'll have bad luck but that's the nature of the game.

Not hard to find a forge.

But the smithing skill should be improved. As said above, it's about no use before 90+ and it only improves weapons. At least weaponsmiths should be able to create weapons and armor. Some pre/suffixes could also be added (randomly, perhaps) like sharpness and stuff.

Since when can you only improve weapons? Used to be fun to change that -20 DV of a moloch armour into a +5 with a few ores of eternium.

Being able to create your own eternium plate mails with pre/suffixes? Don't you think that's a *LITTLE* bit overpowered?

EDIT: You can definately improve other items as well as weapons. Just tried it with my test character, extremely cheated necromancer, and right now he's happily sporting a (-1) [+21,+4] tower eternium shield with and a (+9, 4d8+8) [+2,0] sword of sharpness :) That stuff looks so great I might try a weaponsmith the next time I start a new char...

Yes, I know weapons and armor can be modified, but still, wsmiths should be at least able to create basic weapons (from different ores). Having 20 Eternium ingots ain't gonna help you if you can't find eternium items.

If it were possible to add random pre/suffixes to weapons or armor it could lead to such terrible items as fragile eternium long sword of damnation or trapped eternium plate mail of hate. Who'd want to waste a perfectly fine eternium long sword or eternium plate mail for such. And if it was possible to choose what pre/suffixes one wants that'd be way too overpowering. Imagine one dual-wielding wicked eternium long swords of devastation for instance. If it ware a weaponsmith L50 ability with a *TINY* chance of adding a wanted prefix or suffix, balanced by about doubly likely chance of getting a random negative prefix/suffix it probably wouldn't be so bad.

IMO the smithing ability is fine just the way it is. It should be hard to forge eternium, since it's the hardest metal there is. Respectively iron is much easier. To be able to create own items would be nice, though. but it'd have to take some 20 ingots or some such, and preferably a blessed hammer, anvil, ingots... even a pesky elven chainmail can be easily modified to [+10+10]
and it only weighs 10s... as if that matters...

And my point was...

Nowadays I've noticed that I've really changed my opinion. I too now think weaponsmiths ought to be able to make items. What for? Well, just because I'd like to have a new version of ADOM with at least SOMETHING new in it :D

If the smithing ability were to be enhanced to allow item creation, it should only be able to be done by the Weaponsmith class (other classes would still be able use smithing to upgrade items, of course), and they should only be able to create basic items with maybe a 1% chance per 10 levels to get a random prefix or suffix on the item. It would also take a set number of ingots to make the item (like 10 for weapons, 15 for shields, 20 for armor, etc.). And of course there would always be the chance that the attempt would fail...
Just a thought, not like it will ever happen... But one can dream!

What would be great about that would be the feeling you get for really achieving something, making your own equipment from scratch. Mine the ore yourself, melt it into ingots, and use lots of them to create a nice shield or sword. Wouldn't that be something :) Maybe you could just stick around after closing the gate and act as a smith/merchant in dwarftown, making loads of money by creating superb arms and plate mails!

My favorite hobby, smithing in dwarftown. But as it is now, I can only improve items :(

There usually aren't any walls left +-3 levels near dwarftown in my games :)

Here's a tip. It's pretty far away, but the first 10 levels of the ID are the best places to mine. :-)

Now that I've been playing ADOM for a little bit longer I have to agree with J puting a forge in Terrinyo would be too easy anyway all you have to do is go to Darkforge, oh and Iridia you forgot you need a anvil aswell to use smithing.

Darkforge is corrupting. So is Dwarftown if it isn't generated on level 9, but even then it's slightly less corrupting than darkforge. Always do the puppy quest and go through the UD to HMV, there's a good chance of getting a forge in a corruption free environment.

Well, maybe not prefixes and suffixes could be smithed 'like that'... but what about having a way to smith gems in, causing a prefix/suffix? Like, smithing in a topaz gives the suffix 'of lightning', or rubies causing 'flaming'... perhaps only with weaponsmiths, or only with a decent gemology skill.

But you could have great possibilities, without overpowering the skill. The only problem is the lack of gem variety - hell, it's just an idea.

if you happen to find any scrolls of peace, you could read them in Dwarftown, as I think they reduce the background corruption a level gives. I recall testing this a bit with memory editing programs and it seemed to work.
