I was playing 1.1.1 and I thought, if I could tame a beggar with food, I wonder if I could tame a dwarf with gold, so lucky I found one and started giving it gold in 10gp increments. The thing is by the time I gave it 30gp, it started cringing in pain! And not believing what I saw on the screen, I gave it 10gp more and got the same message "the dwarf accepts the 10gp. the dwarf starts cringing in pain!" I was shocked and stopped giving the dwarf gold not wanting it to die. A few turns later it died! The dwarf never turned hostile (I was a lawful high elven wizard) but I want to know, has anyone tried this? And was that a chaotic act?

Now that would be a weird feature, wonder what the reason would be for a dwarf to start cringing in pain after getting some gold. Are you sure the dwarf wasn't poisoned as the 'cringes in pain' is the standard message for poison?
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

I'm sure it wasn't poisoned. I was the only other character there and i didn't hit it or anything. It was perfectly fine before it got the gold. All I did was give it gold and it died. . . poor dwarfie. . . I'm sure my character felt the pangs of guilt. =)

LOL! Sorry, it WAS a mistake. I tried it again and nothing happened to the dwarf. I guess it WAS poisoned. Really silly of me! I was convinced there for a while. . . =)
