What do I do with gems, blankets and statues ? When should I
start to search for the orbs?

blankets can be water- or fireproof or just plain, they can be useful as they protect your stuff. Gems can be sold, and some gems do have special features.

Yes... Identify gems before you use them. Some are just useless glass, some are precious stones that can be sold, and some have other functions (crystals of knowledge, fire, light and dark). Crystals of knowledge, depending on status, will reveal some of the level layout to you and may (if blessed) increase intelligence. Fire, light, and dark cast spells.

Statues are good for kicking. Kick them until they break apart. You'll get some stones, and, if you're lucky, a wand.

Don't confuse statues with figurines... a figurine, if used, will give you a hostile/neutral/companion of whatever the figurine is, depending on B/UC/C status.

The same way you use any other item. Check your local keybindings.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.
