Looks like I got here first!
Well I'd like to start this ADOM discussion by writing a list of some improvements, similier to the one in the old forum. Only in this forum we can use a lot more utilities!
Here's a few I gathered that we could maybe talk over and elaborate on etc:

  • More weaker classes or races to provide a more challanging game.
  • More cure curruption sources
  • More 'Surges of power' levels where you'd meet a guardian and an artifact (the latest version has a distinct lack of these)
  • More places to go and quests to complete.
  • Better graphics
  • Make survival into 'Hunting' where you could hunt deer etc.
  • More interaction with monsters etc, eg make farmers do things?

Nice effects you provided us with Jan Erik!

More corruption sources? Why? Corruption is not the biggest problem in ADOM (chaotic PC's an exception maybe).

Mostly the surges of power only give a crappy artifect and a bad ass guardian. (I had "Thunderstroke" guarded by a diamond golem in ToEF yesterday. Yuck!)

Better graphics? Erm, again: Why? IMO, the ASCII-represantation is just fine.

The other suggestions sounds like good ones to me. :)

I agree Locke, curruption is the biggest problem in the game and it is severely annoying and upsetting to watch your expertly trained, skilled and advancedly equiped character that you've spent ages working on grow 10 more eyes, or develop hooves for feet etc.
I hate curruption, that is why it says in suggestion number two I said "More CURE curruption sources and not "#More curruption sources" you must have just missed that minor word out because I'd be stupid to wish more curruption wouldn't I!

The graphics are good enough as they are I guess too.

Oops! My bad. I meant: Why more cure corruption sources? Then I said, correctly: Corruption is not the biggest problem. That's my opinion anyway. My very first winner (drakish elementalist) had only 4 corruptions after he closed the gate. And I still had 4 SoCR and the unicorn's quest...

God knows how you did that, I get very currupted in the ToEF and various temples thanks to them grues. By the time I've got right to the Chaos Gate I'm only about 1 or 2 curruptions away with dying.
But even one curruption is enough to really depress me as I know it means that it will carry on till I'm dead, unless I cure it which I mostly can't because SoCC and PoCC are as rare as Ki'Jins.

I like the idea of "minor artifacts" that would have perhaps just one or two of the "artifact-abilities" and would be a bit more common, with perhaps weaker guardians.

aiming magic bolts...
I mean, why the hell you can fire bolts/magic missiles only to N, E, S, W, and their mid directions?
improved acid ball would be very kewl...

I still like the idea of a Doppleganger Emporor. A monster that _is_ you (Your strength, speed, resistances, spells, weapons, armour, etc) I would see it as a double challenge:
- For the player, how do you defeat a monster that is truly as powerful as you.
- For TB, how do you create an AI that can go head to head with a human.

Doppleganger kings are already supposed to be better than the PC.

Doppleganger kings? Wow, is there like a castle with them in with a Queen and all that??
I've only met a normal Doppleganger and I think they make you go all funny by confusing you.
Oh yeah, I remember - I drowned once because he looked like me and I tried to hit him but I jumped into a near by cavern river instead and it didn't even warn me.
Doppleganger kings must be hard then?

I'd say. You should avoid them at all costs! I suggest a web/acid combo if you must fight one.

Palagran: Are you sure the DK is supposed to be _better_ than the PC?

By the time you meet a Doppleganger King, most people are at least acid resistant, and strong enough to break webs. If the DK is better than you, web/acid should not be as much a problem for it.

I'm going by the monster description. It says so. How that actually ties into the DK, I don't know exactly. I'm pretty sure at least speed (excluding points required for movement) and HP are higher by a certain percentage. Scry the exec for a dopplegangar king description to see.

Acid/web works quite well in my experience.

That's just the description. I am pretty sure that the DK has set statistics.
The DE, as I picture it, would have powers that equal yours, regardless of how strinbg you are. ie. same speed, same healing, same strength, same DV same PV, same resistances, same spells. The only way to beat it would be with strategy.

Claadriel> But it'd still be better than you - it couldn't be hit with missile weapons, but you'd still most probably get hit by one...
btw, I've never seen a doppleganger fire a missile weapon or cast a spell.

I think it'd be strange for the description to be like that and it not be true at least in some ways.

Yes, you're right... but when the monster-inventory thingie is implemented, I'd wish for dopplegangers (or lords/kings at least) to use same weapons as you and shoot missiles. Perhaps even fire some spells.

actually...based on your stats DK is better. With my super-fast wizard Trefalgar a DK had equal speed to me. He was the only one who could kill me...luckily i killed him first

Just to clear a few things up: Doppelganger Kings have the same speed, DV and PV like you, but their hitpoints (maybe also damage) vary as they gain levels. So later they ARE indeed stronger than you.

their speed is the same, but energy costs for movement aren't copied. so if you have a ranger/monk/7LB you can take them out with strategy ala those skeletons/beetle things in crawl.

Anyway, let's not drift too much away from the subject...
I think a new types of people should be made, not just ones that you go around killing, ignoring or getting quests off:

Wild Deer - Always leaves a corpse that is as nutritous as an uncursed large ration. Not very good armour, high DV, quite high speed, always are afriad and follows other Wild Deer.
Reason, because the survival skill could be used to hunt herds of them etc.

Traveler - Mostly friendly and offers to trade certain items for other items (potions for food etc). You meet them in the wilderness.
Reason, because it makes the game more interesting and gives more use for attributes like appearance and charisma and skills like haggling.

Mermaids - Appear also in bodies of water, mostly in the wilderness ones. You must have swimming to meet them. They either swim away from you or talk to you depending on your appearence and charisma.
Reason, to maybe recieve magical items off them or be given a water elemental as a pet or something.

Red Rooster - ????
Reason, because Thomas invented the whole thing about them and I wouldn't mind seeing what they could do etc.

Any more ideas would be great!

About the top of this subject: It is CORRUPTION, not curruption. Oh yeah, and its emperor instead of emporor.

Well some people claim that the multi headed ancient chaos dragon is the red rooster. Other than that, no.

  • Confused
  • Drunk
  • Perception <=1
  • Learning <=1

About those surges of power: Yes, they seem to be real rare in 1.0.0. So far I've only got one - in PC:5 guarded by named orc chieftain. Not too bad, I was playing an elementalist (IIRC) and easily scorched him to death. Unfortunately he was guarding... Black tome of Alsophocus. Now there is one useless artifact...

Locke: Oh yeah ? Then tell me what use this could be:

black tome "black tome of Alsophocus"
weight: 400s
powers: random spell when read, corrupts, contains essense of chaos and corruption

I'll NOT use things that corrupt. Ever. I would've sacrificed that stupid useless piece of crap but there was not a single altar in PC (IIRC). And carrying that corrupting piece of s**t all the way to dwarftown...no way !
