It's probly just because its the biggest symbols on the key board. Plus there would be alot of controvesy over which letter to use.

Maybe 'h' then, not 'H' (look at the manual - 'h' means humanoids)

I think it looks like a humanoid figure viewed from a top down perspective. Its a good symbol for the PC.

What do humanoids look like in your opinion, I don't see the resemblance. :P. It looks more like a curled up tadpole. ;)

But it's cool, and it's a unique symbol that doesn't look like any other on the keyboard. Plus it allows for the old joke about email addresses.

Move the cursor to the desired position and press [SPACE] when done.
Impossible. Suddenly you stand elsewhere.

Doesn't it derive itself from the first 'roguelikes' (heh) like Rogue, Moria and Hack? Dunno for sure which was first (Moria is my guess) but maybe someone who knows the origins of these games could aswer this bugging question. Or Google through the net for an answer..

First rogue-like was D&D (real life board game), then rogue (its been 6yrs since I played I think it's a @) Moria & Hack (I seriously know that was a @).
I have an idea why, "Here's looking @ you kid."

I googled for "rogue-like" and found this.

"an @ traditionally represents you in a roguelike"

Not very informative :P.

But I guess it's just one of those things we've got used to over the years, and of which no one knows how they came about.

It's because it signifies the place on the screen where your character is 'at'. Duh!

*whew* I was expecting a "u r dumb, is not cuz of that at all" response.

In all seriousness though: It's large, it's coloured in, it's round. I assume it's done because it is one of the best keyboard symbols that draw the eye of the viewer. Of course, seeing as it has passed down from game to game, it could simply be that the original creators(s) thought it a sign that best evoked the top down view of a fat programmer... small head in the middle, large, fat waist surround...

Lol, fat programmers get my vote. ;)

I wonder, perhaps it's a symptom of roguelike addiction that you suddenly start to look increasingly similar to an @ sign. Or like this:
 _
/ \
@\@
\-/
