I was on PC6 and encountered a doppleganger just. Now look at the messages:

You hit the doppleganger and moderately wound him.
The doppleganger decides to fight to the death in a blind rage!
The doppleganger attacks the doppleganger.
The doppleganger suddenly looks like the doppleganger!
The doppleganger seems to be confused.
The doppleganger is killed!
The doppleganger suddenly looks more powerful.

Ok, that's just confusing. Now the weird part. There was only a one doppleganger, not two of them. So the doppleganger confused and killed himself and then got more powerful.

I think when monsters go into "blind rage" they turn suicidal. The doppleganger turned into himself as a suicide attempt confusing himself then he hits himself and kills himself. The exp. the doppleganger gives is enough to make the Level 1 (I'm assuming) doppleganger stronger, thus making the message the doppleganger suddenly looks stronger. See? Its the way these types of games work. Monsters have their own levels making them grow stronger by the number of monsters killed. Even though he was dead, his data is still there.

That doesn't make any sense does it?

Thats a bug that should have been removed already in the 1.1.0. Raging monsters tend to attack themselves and w/ low HP and damaging attacks they occasionally can kill themselves. The level gaining is just a bonus ;)

A known bug.
Your playing 1.1.0 or 1.1.1? I haven't seen that bug in 1.1.1 yet, but it was common in 1.1.0

I've seen this happen with monsters other then dopplegangers before. I had just assumed it was a bug but what lavos said about blind rage makes alot of sense. Everytime its happened to me the monsters decided to fight to the death first.

Edit: I'm playing ver 1.1.1 on winbeta4.

The idea is: the -foo- goes into a blind rage and, due to a bug in 1.1.0, atttacks itself. It reduces it's own HP to less than 0, but then gains a level, cos it got XP from killing somehting and the level gained could even push it's HP back above 0 again? Or maybe it cant. I dont know.

I'm playing 1.1.1.
Hmm, that doppleganger "suddenly" looked like himself and got confused. Very sane. :)

Well, noone knows how a doppleganger really looks (he's alweys *you* ) - maybe their real shape confuses even them? ;P

I have also seen that in 1.1.1, though in my case it was a harpy. If this bug affected all kinds of creatures it could probably lead to really weird situations with, say, orb guradians or (even weirder) Andor Drakon. Then again I really don't believe it could happen to AD but if it could...

IIRC in some thread it was said that monsters will attack those who activate a fireball trap - even if they did it self. At least I recall reading about The Ancient Stone Beast setting off fireball trap and proceeding to beat the living daylights off itself.

How about the squeaky board trap ? AFAIK monsters will attack any nearby creature setting one off. If Andor Drakon did set off a squeaky board would he be attacked by his own cohorts ? Now THAT would make a really strange scene...

I've never seen AD panic, so I don't think he can go into a blind rage either.

If he was attacked by his cohorts of WMoPCs, would their attacks heal him, the way corruption traps heal chaos monsters?

I used to see drakon panic in the 1.0< versions. I never do now, and if so it may be a bug. Andor Drakon the ElDeR cHaOs GoD decides to fight to the death in a blind rage!
Andor Drakon the ElDeR cHaOs GoD attacks Andor Drakon the Elder chAoS GoD. Does that seem right to you? (maybe with a bully it would seem right)

Now when this bug gets fixed and if AD can still panic you better be vewwy vewwy careful(even though you're not hunting wabbits) should AD actually go berserk on you :)

The only inconsitent bits are the leveling up "and the looking like itself". I don't think them attacking themselves is a bug.

Likewise there is a thread on r.g.r.a about creatures attacking those of their own race in a 'blind rage', and some calling it a bug. I would assume this is intentional too, the 'blind rage' bit tends to signify that the creature has lost all control of not only a) sight, but b) reason.

Madmen can be a danger to themselves, and given the way Andor Drakon's title is spelt, I assume he's mad to the nth degree!

It's a bug. If it's not a bug then it's a feature Thomas wants to get rid of. He's been trying to fix it: from the Techstat.doc: " * Monsters who decide to rage blindly no longer will attack themselves.". That's in changes in v1.1.1.

But they still do. Is the bug still existant despite him saying it is fixed in the list of changes?

And didn't succeed. Why did he put that in the version history then - didn't he test it accurately?

I guess its not really that urgent, its not stopping the game play in any way.
