Alas, my aptly named lvl 26 dwarvish wizard, Ash passed away moments ago after frying himself with a magic missle (it did some real good damage, i ended up on about -600hp!)

I really must learn to be careful when using that spell in a tight corridor....the number of times i've reduced a walking tank of a character into a steaming heap of dust by pressing the wrong direction is crazy now!

Anyhow, I'm restarting & i'm curious as to what effect fate smiles/dooming has on the generation of new levels. for example if i'm doomed, will i come across more vaults (good thing) and if so does fate smiles negate this somehow?
And how about the random generation of artifacts?
I usually play my games being very careful to have both lucky & fate smiles & whenever i'm cursed or doomed i make a tactical withdrawl to the nearest friendly altar, but for some reason I've *never* seen a greater vault, even though i can often get down to the lower areas of the CoC & in several months of playing the only random artifact i've found was the black tome (doh!)
besides Wyrmlance being in the casino shop just once

Do these intrinsics have an effect on items generated in shops? My usual technique is to scum the casino by leaving the spacebar pressed for hours on end while i sleep or something & then buy out the shop & wait for new items to generate then repeat until severe boredom sets in

Cursing/Dooming increases monster generation/toughness, which leads to the greater generation of vaults (generally lesser). Though I wouldn't recommend taking on a greater vault while cursed and doomed, as the creatures are going to rather more powerful than usual. On the flip side I don't think lucky/fate smiles reduces the generation of greater vaults. It's still highly random. I've had games where I find no greater vaults, and I've had games where I've run into five or six.
Artifact generation/Shop Selection isn't affected (IIRC) in any way. It's just plain random.

So we should put on 2 rings of doom and Crown of Science before we go a down stairway? Nice to know. (I'll propably get killed again before I get to the crown, but I'll try anyway :D )

No, I actually asked that question in ircnet's #adom channel already, and the answer is no. Dooming/cursing doesn't affect the vaults generated, they're simply random. Dooming/Cursing only affects the danger level of the vault, when a one is generated.
