Any reason that so many threads end up on the topic of religious beliefs, even though the original topic was of a completely different nature? Seems a lot of threads have gone into the same area of religious debate, usually with the same people participating with the same views. When will it all end? Thank you and have a nice day!

I think you get the same people because these are the people who are interested in the topic.

Hmmm, with the exception of ADOM and Relationships don't the other threads start as religious/philosophical threads?

Your question should be "Why are there so many Religious/Spiritual/philosophical threads." The answer to that is probably that people who want to explore their spiritual beliefs tend to talk too bloody much.

Wow.... thats a lot of threads. Why does it matter if there are so many though? Just gives people something to talk about.

Never said there was an issue with it, just found it odd and interesting that the same ideas are continually discussed with the same arguments over and over. Just thought the discussions would move into new ideas, instead of rehashing the old (which is why I started the 'A Not So Original Thought' thread mentioned above when I was still an Insane Monk type individual and that's why I titled it as I did).
It's much more interesting to discuss concepts and ideas that are completely off the wall, instead of the old debates. New ideas: The makings of progress, Old Ideas: The makings of stagnation and regression...

Heh, if I think a thought or concept is important, then I will want to continue discussing and developing my views on it. For me, my views stagnate if I don't work on them. I dunno how one progresses if one never bothers to reflect on one's ideas.

Erm. Sorry... I don't mean to talk about religion so much... I just think about it a lot, and when I see someone else talking about it I just have to join in.

Seriously, if I'm offending anybody, I'll stop. Not that you couldn't just skip the religious threads; but still, I've seen forums splintering over what to talk about, and it wasn't pretty.

Now people our under the impression that I am saying there shouldn't be any discussion on the topic of religion. If discussing the topic makes you happy, discuss it! The only point I was making was that there are threads that don't begin with the remotest connection to religion but end up on the topic any way, and there are more than a few threads containing the same debates on the subject.
In my view, many are relying on the insights of those who came before, rather than make their own judgements. And quoting from a book is exactly that. Rehashing old ideas is fine, just have to keep from falling into the trap of using those thoughts and ideas as "The Law" and look at the idea at hand from your own view, instead of through the eyes of another.
It's all personal. Anyone have a nice big bowl of melted butter? I've got this lovely lobster here...

Lobster: I think another reason is that I can't stand threads that extend for hundreds of posts, so I keep on stopping old threads and breaking the topics out into new ones.

Iridia, this community doesn't seem like the type that'll go into a fight ;) Someone said earlier (Andor Drakon? Or Lavos? It was someone young) that we must all be pretty much level-headed and patient, since we play ADOM.

Haha, you probably weren't patient enough to read the "we are all patient" line properly ;)

Let's have a useless little poll:

because if we have a thread for every subject we discuss, then we won't have topics go to OT ;)

if you had a new thread for each off topic discussion that started the forum would probably fill up pretty quickly. with a few exceptions i like it when people go off topic now and again. it seems more organic and less formal

yeah, me too. it also prevents threads from getting boring once you run out of stuff to discuss in a topic
