Just looking at my recent messages, I see this:

Congratulations! You advance to level 2.
Your health increases.
The wererat picks up the rat corpse.
The goblin rockthrower displaces the rat.
The goblin rockthrower squeezes past the wererat. Congratulations! You advance to level 3.
You gain the talent 'Strong Aura'

Why did I just gain a level? (Note, the only monsters I had killed were 4 rats, with one firebolt. None of them were bleeding or posioned or anything) That is weird.

It depends. What character are you playing? Are you a human?Do you have the Good Learner/Great Learner talent?Even 4 rats could make you gain a few levels, you know.

EDIT:
And besides, you were just Level 1.

Fear me not,I'll go nice on you....For now.

That's true. Also, are you sure you only killed 4 rats? If you could not see further, it might be that you actually killed more.

Then there's also the possibility that the some rat stepped onto a fireball trap and killed a big bunch of summoned rats outside your LOS. Kind of small chance, but it's a theory.
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

I didn't have either of those talents, and I think I was a high elf, and I might have killed a few other monsters, but why did I gain a level several turns after the last time I killed a monster? The only thing I can think of is J.'s idea, though I think there's a message (you hear roaring flames or something)

You can hear that when one of your spells hit something outside your LOS.

Also; in those 'several turns before you suddenly level up',did you actually had the chance to do anything?Or did you just had to press spacebar to skip through the messages?

Check your kills (shift+k), and see if you did not get credit for some monster that killed itself on a trap. You still get xps from that, even if you don't see the monster killed.

Taz: A potion of gain attributes (4s) is lying here. Suddenly a stone block hits your head! Something on the ground is smashed to pieces!
PeanutGod: Awwww no! How harsh is that! This is where you need the artefact 'mop and bucket'.

I turned on the var "Show_Experience" in adom.cfg, so ADOM shows me the amount of exp my char is gaining right when he gains it, like that:
"You hit the goblin and slay it [+9xp]"

And sometimes it writes something like:
"[+34xp][+67xp][+11xp][+80xp]"
without any visible reason for gaining exp!

As said before,a monster could have accidently stepped on a trap,or you killed something outside your LOS.

These are the only logical explanations,it seems.

If the game displays one amount of experience you gain for no apparent reason, it can also mean a monster that fled from you died of poisoning or bleeding or sth... Many at a time, it probably is a trap. That, or a vortex blowing up because some monster stepped on an alarm :P Yeah, well, an alarm trap is a trap so that can be counted as a "death caused by trap"..
