I've had dogs as a farmer and others as a bard, but what are the limits of who you can get to follow you around? My paladin once had a ancient dragon follow it around, albiet it was a scroll of famialiar summoning. Is there a way to befriend a dragon without summoning it with a scroll?

1.There are no limits for the companions who can follow you around.Well, maybe if they are too many they will fill an entire dungeon.(Could that count as a limit?)

2.You can't befriend a dragon. You could calm it though. The only way to befriend a monster is by giving it certain items(to certain monsters).Music could tame monsters, and animals befriend druids.

Music tames animals. You can get beggars as companions by giving them food/gold. They're useless companions, though. Killer bugs can be quite viscious, and also giant boars have been known to get molochs after some training. Better be a bard, as only bards get companions to be their loyal companions. With other classes, monsters you've tamed will become hostile towards you after some time. Dangerous with experienced monsters.

You can pacify rust monsters with iron items, but if you give them loads of items, will they get tamed?

Same question with felines, if you give them rats/fish/fresh meat, can you tame them, or will they just calm down? I seem to recall that you can tame them this way.

I don't think you can tame any other monsters. You can buy a flesh golem in the HMV and also get Hawkslayer follow you in HMV when you're experienced enough and know the password. The only other ways I can think of are scrolls of familiar summoning, blessed familiars, wishing for friends, or using an uncursed RoDS(you'll get a djinni companion. I'd rather take the wish from a blessed one!).

Then again, you could always play a necromancer...
If you're feeling happy, don't worry, it'll go away.

You can tame cats with rats, fish, fresh or raw meat.
I haven't checked the rust monsters, but I don't think you can (threw and gave quite a lot of metal to them, and nothing).

Might give a beserker a wedding ring. I dunno if that tames, or just pacifies.

I've noticed that companions/pets turn hostile easily if they're left alone for a long time aka they're not in your LOS but are in the same level.

The message is something like "You feel morals changing".. That means that your pet just went hostile.

Even from scrolls of familiar summoning. It might not be a very good idea to summon a pet balor in the DH:2 when at lvl 16 and have it waste all that comes in your way... :)

Legend has it they don't like it very much when people make armour from their hide. Supposedly they get enraged if you fight them while wearing armour made of their kind.

But what does that have to do with anything?

Maybe giving them armour made from their hide will tame them?

I still don't understand though;giving wedding rings to berserkers tame them? They must be lonely. :(

Mmmm.. Wouldn't it be nice if:

1. U kill a dragon. It leaves some scales from it's hide.
2. U go and "smith" 'em scales to a regular scale mail.
3. U get a dragon-scale mail!

They're slaves, not pets. Slaves can't be commanded if you don't have the necromancer class power, so they're a diffrent case then tamed monsters (and tamed monsters still go postal for necromancers, like on all classes exept bards).

But not only necromancers can make slaves. Any class with Necromancy (Potion/scroll of education, wish) can make slaves.

Seriously, though;why does giving wedding rings to berserkers tame them? Why?WHY?

I didn't until recently discovered that potions of wonder gives you a random spell.I thought they would confuse you or something,so I'd usually just leave them alone or sell them at shops.Damn.

Well, anarchy2, all that beserker rage is really pent up androgenous erotic lust, and the prospect of marriage - whether from a pretty young sorceress, a handsome golden haired warrior or a large, sweaty man-troll - is such that they immediately forswear all other commitments and follow you around like the lovesick puppies they are.

At least I think he was a troll.

FYI, berserkers will only marry characters of the same gender (probably a bug) - if a female character gives a wedding ring to a male berserker or vice versa, the berserker will simply drop the ring. I think you're right that they're not picky about race or class, though.
