i was in the ID and caste baptism of fire on a necromancer. after destroying a mass of ghuls, i found a STRANGE STICK lying amoung the ashes. The stick is listed as a missle so i went to barnabas the black market merchant without any dealings with the assasins guild, decided to drop the stick to see how much it would fetch. Barnabas offered 1175 gold pieces for the STRANGE STICK which was very unusual. my question is "is the STRANGE STICK an artifact?" and what about statues because ive found while playing as a farmer, a rat statue. are these artifacts, if not, whats with the high stick price?

It's a boomerang. Dunno why it's so valuable though. Identify it (throw it at someone will work) and see what it says.

No, the strange stick is not an artefact, just a very valuable piece of wood, that returns when thrown, and dishes out some medicore damage (like 2d5+3).
Don't know why shopkeepers value it so much, a barbed boomerang goes up to 100 000 gold pieces.

One wonders why shopkeepers also seem to value battle-axes and heavy armor. What are they planning?

You pick up the Blessed Amulet of Life Saving. Waldenbrook, the dwarven shopkeeper, slowly turns toward you.

Gods seem to love battle-axes too (at least Corellius does)

Everyone does.
Just look at them:
Longswords - 1d8, that's 1 to 8 damage. weight: 40s
Broadswords - 1d7+1, that's 2 to 8 damage. weight: 80s. More damage, for twice the weight.
Battle axes - 1d6+2, weight 70s. Less weight and even more damage than broadswords.
That's why they're the most valuable. If you're and orc, than there's nothing better to sacc, go hunt gnolls :D
