Duh, literacy is one skill that high elves get. RTFM.

I heard somewhere before that if Learning is greater than or equal to 10 then you get literacy. (Was it my illusion?)

Illumi, that's right unless you're a Barbarian or a Beastfighter. If you are one of those, you don't get Literacy unless you are a High Elf or Grey Elf, who get literacy no matter what.

@, were you playing an old version before? That's the only reason I can think of for a high elf not being able to read at the start.

Its been said, but let me make it clear..

All classes but Beastfighters and Barbarians get literacy if they have learning of 10 or more. Those two don't have that chance.. But that doesn't mean they cannot get it at all.

I belive monks also get the ability even if the learning score is small...

I could be wrong..

Wizards (and maybe other spellcasters) will always get Literacy, even a troll with Learning 1.

Anyone ever heard of a MANUAL? Skills each race and class gets are listed there. There it also says all classes 'cept barbarians and beastfighters get literacy if they have a starting score of 10 or more in learning.

@, maybe you played a dark elf? High/gray elves always get learning.

Yes, let's not read where it is explained, ask people, that's a briliant idea and probably the fastest :S
It's both faster for you and less work for the others if you look it up in the manual instead of asking.
